Left Pec Muscles and Right Shoulders: Restriction Causing Restriction

The Postural Respiration manual has a section devoted to Left Pec Inhibition. It was one of the last topics that I understood in the grand PRI hierarchy of understanding.
Tight left pecs often restrict right shoulders movement. Tight left pecs often restrict left shoulders, too, but I'm concentrating on the right shoulder in this video.
But why do pec muscles get tight and overactive? Bench pressing too much? Maybe, but not that's not the biggest issue.
The pecs get tight and overactive, in particular the left pec and the right pec minor, when we become "ungrounded" and use our neck to breathe. The typical right BC pattern results in overactive pec muscles.
They also get tight when our spine exists in a state of extension, we lose our ability to rotate our spine, and our arms stop swinging (PEC pattern).
Once the left pec is tight, or simply overactive, it must be inhibited so that we can move our center of mass to the left, shift into left AF/IR, establish a left ZOA, and open the right side with air. At that point the right arm can move backwards in an unrestricted manner.

    I loved this phrase of yours: "For your brain to make sense of the left side, it needs to know what the right side is doing and vice versa. For the brain to make sense of the right side, it needs to know what the left side is doing. Your brain has to constantly compare sides. One side is meaningless: you as a human cannot know anything unless through comparison. You only know what you are because you know that you're not the other thing." - Neal Hallinan

I’ve always been so discouraged about the insane amount of inhibition and imbalance from my right to left. Right lat, pec, scm, etc is double the size of my right. Chest doesn’t rise at all when breathing. I did the left tilt and breathing to open my right posterior zone, I’ve never felt breathing like this before. I feel incredible. As always great video Neal! Ive been following your video’s for a long time since I have a simular issue with my vision. My prescription was -2.5 C 0.25/ -2,25 c 0.75 and as a child had many, many muscular issues with my legs. 6 months ago I started with neuro vision training and my vision improved and is now at -1,25 / - 1,25. (No prism glasses) With every diopter that I lose, my body finds more relaxation and grounding. Also my left jaw is more relaxing and had always been very tight. It takes time and very much patience because your eyes needs to get used to the new prescription everytime. I used to have a very tight left pec and left quad which destroyed me. Since a couple of weeks I have this feeling in my left hamstring near my butt that is working very hard and because of your other video related to the hamstrings I know I’m on the right track and that the body is healing from all visual stress that Ive had in the past. What is your opinion about a wrong prescription that changes the dominant eye? Keep up the good work 👊🏻

    You're welcome. I forgot to mention that "technically", a PRI instructor may say that it restricts torso rotation to the right, which limits arm swing. But you can describe it many different ways. Left Shoulder Horizontal Abduction and Right Leg Abduction limitations may also indicate the need for left pec inhibition, which is another way of saying that the right apical chest wall is still restricted and the left apical chest wall is still over-inflated.

    Hey Neal. Thanks for creating the best channel on KZread. I have noticed that you are not talking much about the left shoulder in any of your videos. Is it rare to have problems with the left shoulder in L AIC R BC pattern? I personally never had any problems with my right shoulder but my left scapula was bouncing all over the place, and also caused pain, when I moved my arm. That is until I found your channel and got out of the pattern. Now my scapula moves correctly but I still feel like my left shoulder is very weak, and I was wondering if there were any PRI techniques specifically for the left shoulder. The all fours left ZOA exercise of course work it somewhat. Should that be enough and then later on start light with some basic scapula strengthening exercises like scapular pushups?

  • @NealHallinan

    Thanks for the compliments. It's not necessarily rare, it's just vastly more complicated and can also involve multi-directional instability/pathology that was created over time and/or visual issues that contributed to that pathology. Basically, there are too many potential variables that can contribute to it that I can't give any advice on what to do about it because each "origin" will have different remedies. And I know if I do make a video about it, people will ask what to do about it, but I won't be able to tell them anything besides "find a PRI provider" because there is no way for me to know what the "origin" is.

Ive noticed my left pec is over developed while right back/shoulder muscles also over developed, and of course i get impingements in my left shoulder. • @NealHallinan

    @NealHallinan

    3 жыл бұрын

    Well, the left low trap is always "on" as a spinal rotator to the right. Perhaps that is creating a bigger left middle trap too. The right arm won't swing back because: 1. The left hip is unstable. 2. Left abs can't function to "hold" the left pelvis and left ribcage closer together while left scapular muscles can't stabilize the left scapula on the ribcage. 3. Because of the first two points, we can't counter-rotate our torso to the right effectively and thus can't swing the right arm back, which also leads to a weakened right low trap/tricep.

    Pelvis rotation and the left AIC pattern aren’t the same thing. However, in the vast majority of cases, the left AIC pattern results in an overall pelvic rotation to the right. Additionally I don’t know how physios are doing their testing. We test for the left AIC pattern, not necessarily for pelvic rotation so we are approaching things from completely different perspectives

    A fair bit has to do with being right hand dominant, and doing everything with your right hand, then when you require both sides for something heavy, because you are weak in the left arm the left pec takes a lot of the load, whereas on the right side your pec takes less load and your arm does the work.
