There’s also the animal names that don’t make any sense... fårekylling (sheep-chicken) apparently is the word for a cricket.

I never even thought about it. That says more about our language than anything. However, do look up "mountain-chicken".

Oh, entomological etymology. Fårekylling is a corruption of farekylling, danger-chicken. Apperently they were once believed to by omens of danger.

English is also quite a simple language, both in regard to grammar and vocabulary. I can mention at least a dozen Danish words lacking English equivalents like dannelse, døgn or farfar, farmor, mormor osv..

Fjerkræsaks. The “saks” actually originated not from scissors but from a type of dagger called a seax or saks which was used in the early Middle Ages

Fun fact it’s called four legs but in Danish it’s spelled “firben” when fire is four, and fir isn’t a word

You say 'tortoise' if you know better but people don't know the difference between a turtle and a tortoise usually.
