I became intimidated with the blank page of a sketchbook after seeing too many sketchbook reveal videos where the artist flipped through page after page of amazing art. I could never have home run art on every page. So to get over this fear, I either gesso over a clunker page and create better art, or rip it out completely or take a loose page of art and glue it down over the failed art in my sketchbook. Now I can flip through my sketchbooks without cringing over every other page, LOL.

I really like the format of this video. I've been following your channel for a very long time but this video is different. Maybe it's because of the captions or samples you added... No idea. I just love its structure :)

Thank you so much. I put a lot of effort into this one! From the planning stages, editing, and everything else.. it was work but worth it :) I'm quite happy with it. And your comment just made my day. I hope I can begin to make my videos of a better quality from here on out. That's my goal. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts, very much appreciated!

Thank you for sharing these tips! I can completely relate with the "art can be created once" mindset... Gonna practice drawing the same thing multiple times to overcome it.

Just ranting, don’t click “show more” if you don’t want to read infinite paragraphs. … I didn’t realize this was posted one day ago so I was wondering why there are ao few likes, haha. I’m new to your channel, and your first video of the “How To Draw” series really brightened me, you gave me so much information on what materials I should afford for drawing, and mentioned how important sketches are too! Don’t tell anyone but I was spending all my life just commit the drawings without sketching, no matter I was quite bad at it. I was inspired into learning how to draw by several reasons and one of the drawings which made me feel satisfied after so long was created around this time last year. Then, a year later, I found yet again another two inspirations for myself to start learning how to draw from scratch, like, seriously learning Art. Some of my friends who are very good at drawing taught me how to draw an eye without making it look weird, and what a surprise, after so long testing lots of ways on how to draw eyes, the first eye slowly appeared as I scribble and it was so good I can’t help myself trying to draw more. Then, after all of that, I tried to draw a lot more things, especially human’s face. Couldn’t make it out myself though, since it always looks so weird right after I added some more details into the sketch. The eyes didn’t fit, I don’t know how to sketch the hair, and so many other problems. In summary, I’m just here to try to learn Art from the beginning and I’m aiming towards the recipe on how to draw a human’s face :) Oh and I forgot to say this, have a good one, Mr. Schaefer!

Good morning! I have heard you say to take at least 5 to 15 minutes of each day to draw and I have heard you say some take you hours to draw, which I am sure some drawings do take one that long to draw. My question is, do you have any suggestions on how to make yourself slow down the drawing process? I have a hard time with this. Please let me know if my question makes sense. Have a great day!

I find mindfulness helps. Just trying to breathe and be in the moment. Sometimes I find myself admiring the process itself while drawing and how much I’ve improved. If it’s a hard concept for you, look for a guided mindfulness meditation that speaks to you. It’s a bit hard to put into words, but those can help you experience the feeling.

Hi Marcia, every drawing I do is different. Some are quick sketches and in a smaller sketchbook (5.5" x 8.5") so they only take 10-20 minutes usually. Others are in a 9" x 12" sketchbook and those can take anywhere from 55 minutes to 2 hours (rarely). Average is about 1 hour and 15 minutes. It happens to me too. I find myself becoming impatient during the process. Is that what you're talking about here? Becoming impatient? Best thing I can think to do is to take breaks. Whenever you start feeling the process becoming overwhelming or tedious, then it's time to take a break for a while, however long you need. Could be a few minutes, could be an hour or a few, or even a day. Go back to your drawing refreshed and with new eyes, and start again. That's the best advice I can give I think. Also, try listening to a podcast, music, or something you find interesting while drawing. I do this a lot as well. I find it helps me to get in the zone and just lose track of time and enjoy myself. Hope this helps Marcia :)

This is one area where digital tablets can be interesting to use. You can create layers or abuse the undo button. I'll always love the real thing though. The skills you learn along the way are worthwhile investments.

There’s something I’d like to ask, How do artists start? Like what lessons do they take first? Do they just start drawing something they want or there’s a lesson to begin with? I’m really confused as of now. Sorry I’m rambling right now but I need someone to answer my questions- What do you need to start off as an artist? Specifically what do they learn first? I tried gathering study art materials from Pinterest, Google, and KZread but I don’t know where to start- Do I just start sketching what I see- Anyways yeah, Art really is complex that’s why I like it XD

They way I started was as a kid. I just drew things because it was fun. I drew what I was interested in - at that time it was cartoons. Eventually my family got my "How to Draw.." books. Like how to draw 50 animals, 50 cars.. etc. I would just try to copy everything. When I got older, I started drawing from what I saw. One of the best ways to improve is to draw from life - draw what you see. But also focus on what you're interested in. If you're unsure about your interests, I have a video that will help. It involves Pinterest and you seem to already use it, so that's perfect: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gnpkzauymNvHh8o.html As far as what to learn first. It just depends on what you're interested in and what kind of things you want to draw. At this moment in time, I don't really have an interest in human anatomy or figure drawing. So it would be waste of time for me to learn that stuff. I won't apply it or use it. Maybe don't learn anything yet. Just get experience drawing. Learn from your mistakes and improve your hand-eye coordination. And have fun :)

Practice, patience, enjoy the process, have fun, only compare yourself to yourself & not to others, know the reason or purpose for why you’re drawing, learn from your mistakes (they are always inevitable and an important part of the process), and always use references- either from observation and life or from photos.
