I read through so many guides and watched so many videos on how to DIY a compost bin from a tote, and your video does the absolute best job of explaining WHY each step is important and HOW to do it correctly. Thank you for being such a great instructor! I feel a lot more confident in starting my DIY composter.

You can also heat up a skewer on the stove to melt through, this is what I do any time I need to make holes in plastic. Works great with no cracking.

I am sooooo glad that I not purchased a compost bin/tumbler/etc. I was even considering that Bokashi method. But I don't have the ground or extra raised bed to trench it. I can do this! Thank you. Thank you! Thank you!

Wish i had seen this video years ago. I bought a tumbler. It does work but most of the good nutrients drain out of it way too quickly when it's time to keep it moist. So i have a bucket under to collect the compost tea. I save it and add it to the areas I'm going to plant in over fall and winter even over the snow to help get that area nutrients to soak in the existing ground. Also i don't get as much compost as i need. I have these same totes so this is a game changer for me 5 years later😊 late is better than never so thank you so much!!

Professional tip homie…..over in Idaho, there is potato farmers that farms that are literally miles wide and miles long. REST ASSURED they do NOT dog out their entire garden and replace the dirt every year. That’s damn ridiculous!!! You CAN reuse the dirt!! Just grow a good nitrogen fixing over crop for the winter. Like wheat grass. Then till it in in the spring.

PRO TIP: Put a few small rocks at the front of the bin so there's a gap about a mm so worms that travel on the top of the earth, will find cover and then start working their way up for you. Reason I say this is, we all know what happens to planter bottoms when you lift them up or move them... This hide out spot where they will gravitate to, will make it easier for them to find the holes in your planter! -cheers

These storage totes are more ideal I think so I’m giving them a try. I can stack them when one bin fills up and empty them as I produce compost. When I saw your thumb nail with the totes it was my eureka moment. TFS

I do the even lazier man's method. I have less, way less holes, in my tote. I fill the tote all summer and top it off in August and again in November and then I don't touch it until May or June. I have the totes in a spot that gets winter sun. I might water them once or twice if I remember. Super lazy, takes forever, but the cycle works for me.
