I just discovered your channel. I've always wanted to garden but all the videos I watched were so complicated and you needed to spend so much money. Since I don't know what I'm doing spending money on something I might kill would just deter me cause I don't have much money to spare. I've been binge watching your videos and every video I'm like "I can do this, I can do this". You explain it so well and you don't waste money. I love the tub and chair idea! And for the first time EVER composting makes sense and seems doable. I'm gonna have a small garden on my deck this spring. Thank you!!

Hi. Robbie . I have been learning about compost and planting on my own by reading and going in u tube since 1993 it has been a long journey. This year 2019 am gonna try your method with the compost under the plant containers. It seems simple but I think it make a lot of sense . Am in queens, ny and probably some things won’t work but that’s ok. Am still gonna try. Your energy feeds my energy. As soon as winter is leaving I start with seeds in the house until it gets a little warm and then I plant in containers. This year for the 1st time I did the small cup to start the seeds and it’s working . It’s been better than other methods that I learn before. I wish you was my neighbor. I have no neighbors that really grow vegetables. Also was gonna say that I have not found any wood chips to cover the container tops. Thank you and your husband ( Gary) for taking out time to keep us busy learning from your experiences. Thank You

Thank you so much for your video(s), especially for the ones you made in composting and making your own soil. I'm trying to learn enough to get started with at least a little gardening. This video was the one that had me out in my yard this morning, setting up my first bin. By the way, I thought I wouldn't have enough material to get started. I don't exactly live out in the nature. But it turns out, the amount of half rotten leaves and paper and cardboard and garden clippings I was able to find around the house would have been enough to get several bins started.

I look forward to your new posts. This one is great because I can share it with my friends to help explain the technique in detail. You have a following of a group of us here in N. Calif. This technique has revolutionized my home garden of 30+ years. I had composted and done vermiculture, gradually moving toward "chop-and-drop" techniques but this put it all together for me. It seems ideal for small urban gardens. One thing I've been wondering is how you have tomatoes that survive the winter. It must be that much warmer there than where I am in Calif.

I'm in Las Vegas ,in an apartment and I have a few questions.(I also have tomatoes started from organic tomatoes in the compost pile in September that have survived 28 degrees on my patio ) I want to set up a 3 tier Tower(+) on my cement patio . I can't put holes on the bottom of my containers. My idea is to put cement blocks with holes about an inch to an inch and a half up that I can use the drain water as compost tea.I'm also going to buy some worms because we have none here. Think it will work? Thank you Patricia Kurschinski

I attempted to keep my tomatoes going thru the winter this year by having them in black large tubs so they would catch as much heat as possible using the compost in place methods. It seems they ALMOST made it but by January they had died back. I'm keeping a few rooted just in case there is still some life there.

I followed some of the other gardening videos on KZread and they were "buy this and buy that and you will have a successful garden". Well I bought stuff and it didn't work. Now I live in an apartment with a small patio. How would you do drainage? I don't want to stain the cement.

Did you figure the drainage out in a workable way? I would think a duplicate' catchment' bin at the bottom with a couple of bricks or rocks in between would work. And it would allow you to reuse the drained water.

Robbie, I LOVE your videos. So informative and fun! I have done many of the things you suggest. Question. I have a concern about “jumping worms”. I live in NC and we have some that come in on pine needle mulch. They have stripped the soil and eaten all around the young roots on the top 3 inches of soil of a yoshino shiny cherry tree. And left castings that have NOTHING in it. The soil looks like coffee grounds. Have you run into this yet and how would you use your compost of how would you get rid of that compost in order to not have those jumping worms transfer to your garden?

As far as tree roots growing into the bin, why would it make a difference if the hole is round vs longer rectangular holes?

Excellent video. Now I know how to start. Can I use cedar chips in the compost? Thank you for your time.

I would think using cedar would be possible but cedar is desired for its resistance to rot so works better as a mulch.

I've have garbage pail I'm using for compost but it seems to be taking so long to break down. I wonder if I need more holes for drainage so I don't kill the worms/maggots...???? I use a big stick to turn it every once in a while but now I wonder if I even have to do that???

HI Robbie, red is your color! Beautiful. Hi Gary. Question: do you ever add sugar to your compost tea? Saw that somewhere and am wondering.

Hi Barbara, no but I do toss that into my compost in place bins. For my compost tea, I usually only add in yellowing leaves, or green leaves, like kale and collard and whatever, and use that as my compost tea in a few days when it breaks down and starts to smell. Sugar should be find to add in if you want, thanks Robbie
