Isis are definitely cool. They were probably the first post-metal band I heard back in the day, though back then I don't think the genre even had the label. Back then I appreciated the atmosphere but the harshness of the growls and very granitic nature of the riffs were a turn-off. Years later after getting into harsher death metal and even harsher post-metal like Cult of Luna I now find those elements don't bother me, and I suspect I'd enjoy Isis even more so now than I did back then. I definitely enjoyed this track. I remember how huge their first couple of albums were. While Neurosis arguably created the genre of post-metal, I'd say Isis were the next evolutionary step forward, especially when it came to making the slow-burn atmospheric thing such a huge element in the genre.

I liked this a lot on a first listen. It can definitely go on my playlist. New band to check out. I like the contrast you spoke of and the overall vibe. I don't mind not knowing the lyrics at first. I like the mystery and challenge to dig for deeper meaning of the musical message or story, if there is one. Side note: It reminds me of a song I really enjoy musically by The Black Dahlia Murder, but can't handle the lyrical content. But I don't toss it aside because it is still musically pleasing to me and I just laugh at the absurd lyrics now that I know them.

Hi Bryan, I would love to hear your reaction to John McLaughlin. Sorry, I’m kinda piggy backing on this vid! He’s 80 now, and still making great music. Jazz (Played with Miles Davis), flamenco, Indian classical, etc., he’s done it all. The album I would love to hear your take on is ‘Natural Elements’ by Shakti. John was playing exclusively acoustic at this point, having just come away from the mega success of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, which was ear meltingly electric. Anyhow, I’m enjoying this stuff. Not keen on the grunting vocals, but the music is strong. Cheers. Love this channel.

Please do Hall of The Dead! It's the song that precedes this one on the album and is incredibly good.

Interesting. I listened to them a bit probably more than 10 years ago and decided I didn't like them as much as Neurosis (I specifically remember I didn't like the use of the rhythm guitars back then) and stopped following them, but I like this much better than what I remembered. Will check them out some more! If the topic is excessiveness, I'd really love to get Blind Guardian in. You've reacted to just one of their songs in the past (and liked it). This time I'd like to recommend their song "Battlefield" that has an excessive amount of layering (vocals and guitars), but I guess it's quite "excessive" in other ways as well. Their songs, especially in this album, are quite packed - energetic and changing frequently. Their latest single from their upcoming album has an excessive amount of drive and heaviness: Blind Guardian - Deliver Us From Evil
