There is a band called Psalms with Chino from the Deftones and then 3 members of ISIS. Also, Sumac is insane and the singer/guitarist of ISIS with an insane bassist and drummer. Ty for lending time to ISIS as they were rad for sure every listen and every show I did.

I have nothing but pure love for these guys. Heavy but then they break into wonderful melodies and then back again. So few albums but so big in what they did produce. Edit to add: Favourite track is the whole of the "Oceanic" album. The whole thing has to be listened to, uninterrupted. Beautiful. After that, though, favourite 'conventional' track is "Holy Tears". Man! The climax on that gives me a real one!

Imagine seeing this early stuff in a 40’x30’ room; it was insane.
I still remember the day they announced their break-up, I felt so sad, because I'd never get the chance to see them live. 😅 This band was so important in shaping the core of my music taste back in the late 2000's. The long, atmospheric and mostly instrumental songs that went from being crushingly heavy riffs to beautiful, gentle parts. I just felt right at home.

@@constructionbootgazer I started listening to them 4 months after that last show. I was so bummed I missed it. Especially since I live in mtl.
Can't go wrong with ISIS, I can listen to their albums (especially from Oceanic on) completely with no skips. Beautiful stuff.
20 minutes / 40 years takes you from despair, if you have any, and straight into hope and optimism. That whole album, Wavering Radiant, is a masterpiece. It's Pink Floyd-level of atmospherical/ambient intensity, but far darker, and far lighter (in the end). And such beautiful passages, a favorite of mine being the "clean" bridge that ends with "and with meeee, always (always)" in Ghost Key is just *chefs kiss*. I wanted to add, when you listen to Wavering Radiant, I highly recommend some buzz from that jazz tobacco, and a comfortable chair, bed or couch - with closed eyes, and letting the music paint visuals behind those closed eyelids. It's quite the experience.

The emotional arch of their songs, nearly all of them from Oceanic onward is INSANE. Thanks for sharing this insight.
My all time fav band, they offer me everything I want from music.
Isis (now go by Celestial for obvious reasons) are one of my all time favorite bands. Aaron Turner is a musical savant.
They just celebrated their 20th year anniversary for their album, Oceanic. Masterpiece.
You can tell that Key Of Geebz loved listening to ‘So Did We’ so much that he was lost for words at 15:59. “I love the thought- I thought- I love the- I fuk it- I LOVE THE FACT…”
What a band! So glad we have excellent ISIS reaction. Amazing Geebz.

My drummer friend and I have been writing music recently after our cover band fizzled out yet again (it's so hard to find dedicated and flexible musicians in a small town), and we wrote and recorded something that after listening to a couple days later reminded of some ISIS stuff. It was his drum part that caught me. And then after listening to Oceanic, Panopticon, and Wavering Radiant again after at least 5 years I realized how much influence their music has had on my writing style.
Saw them in 2007.. great band. They are better with every re-listen.
ISIS is so freakin dope. So unique and stand-alone, in a sea of similarity, or clone sounds. I love bands like Radiohead, Deftones, Massive Attack, and ISIS, who aren’t afraid to play with sound and create something strange, yet beautiful. Simplistic, yet complex and layered. Something delicate, yet powerful. Great choice of a band to do a session on.. 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼If you ever get the chance to see them live, IF they ever come together to perform again, you have to jump on it. Incredible!! I HIGHLY recommend a project they did with Chino Moreno (Deftones) on vocals, called ‘Palms’. So dope!
Oh, my! Instant like! Dulcinea is my favorite from this list, but the overall mood of this band is unique.

Legit laughed out loud at the "heroic dose" comment. Isis is my all time favorite band. Masterpiece albums to listen straight through.
Panopticon in its entirety is a damn masterpiece. Worth a listen from start to finish, and then some more listens after that
Couldn't click fast enough. One of my top 5 bands, for sure. You might have missed a favorite or two of mine, but I ain't complaining. You got an excellent representative sample here.
When I listened to Panopticon for the first time, I realized what listening to a band that mastered their sound feels like. Absolute masterpiece and So Did We is arguably the best song in there. You could listen to it 100 times and each time appreciate something different and nuanced, thats how much depth and texture there is.
panopticon is just one of those albums where a decade happens in a week. that alnum is massive and the cooncept of that album is haunting and scary but also they nailed it perfectly. legendary concept album.
Wavering Radient is such a damn masterpiece. Band doesn't get the credit it deserves for what they were bringing to the table at the time.
A slow burn on APC? Hyped!
FINALLY! Yes. This is my all time top band. I have been trying to get you to listen to these guys for ages. So happy. Quite literally, anything from Oceanic, Panopticon and Wavering Radiant is amazing.
So Did We and Dulcinea are top notch selections. 👍
Tidal. It’s the best word I can find to describe their sound.
Incredible band. Seen them open for TOOL Chicago 2006. The drummer Aaron was Danny's drum tech for a moment. The song 20 minutes/40 years melts..fantastic. Ever listen to Explosions in the Sky, God is an Astronaut, Russian Circles, Jakob?

Explosions, GIAA, Russian Circles, and Jakob are all constantly on my Playlist lol.
One of my favourite bands despite splitting up 12 years ago, The drummer Aaron Harris is now mostly a composer and producer though after Isis split 3 of the band members formed Palms with Chino Moreno of Deftones, Singer/guitarist Aaron Turner has since been in more bands than Mike Patton 😆 and currently splits his time between Sumac, Old Man Gloom his solo albums as well as Mamiffer which is his wife’s project (Faith Coloccia) who is a fantastic singer and song writer and is definitely worth checking out
Carry & In Fiction changed my view on what music could be all those years ago. Lovely band.
Thank you for this, kind sir. Saw them live in 2005, they were playing whole "Panopticon" album and an experience was like a swift kick in a head with a sledgehammer. To this day one of my favourite bands.
Isis were my introduction to post-metal. They were such a great band. You should do a Cult of Luna slow burn sometime for another masterclass of the genre's best.
The bassplayer is SO darn good
You can hear the influence of the Melvins in the early stuff, perhaps filtered through the grunge era, who are the godfathers of sludge metal. The two bands even released an EP together in 2010, and were label mates on Mike Patton's Ipecac Recordings. In fact, according to my Instagram feed, today is the 20th anniversary of "Oceanic," so splendid timing, Geebz. Edit: I guess you can check one out from "Oceanic" next time. 😁
Your reaction to ‘So Did We’ is the same as everyone on the first listen 😍

Seeing Isis live with Pelican opening changed my life forever, so thanks so much for doing a slow burn featuring these guys. Some other notable tracks by them that I think you'd enjoy covering are Grinning Mouths, Threshold of Transformation, Pliable Foe, and Way Through Woven Branches. Cheers Geebz, keep pumping out great decompositions!
What an absolute AMAZING band... so sad they stopped, but they INDEED stopped on their own terms, without going backwards or dying slowly as bands are apt to do.
Oceanic’s 20th Anniversary is today. I’m still so sad this group isn’t around anymore.
ah yes the perfect band for a slow burn!
So glad to see this band getting some love. been a fan since the early 2000's
I still recall the first time I heard them in a cool record shop in Ann Arbor Michigan, it was the Oceanic album and it left a huge impression. I feel like they just kept getting better and then full stopped, luckily I got to see them live with Tortoise in Chicago. They did also tour with Tool for a bit and in fact Justin plays bass on one of the tracks on Panopticon. I'm glad you're being more adventurous with your picks, I didn't realize how big the reaction crowd on KZread was and then I realized that most of them get stuck in some sort of lane and suddenly all they're doing is reacting to the same 5 metal bands. I don't know if they're actually getting contacted by the labels, but it seems very much like a lockstep marketing campaign, rather than a journey of discovery, so kudos to you.
I know why you liked the production on 20 Minutes / 40 Years. Joe Barresi was the producer and he’s known for working with Tool, QOTSA, Kyuss, and a bunch of other bands. He is my favorite producer of all time and Isis was criminally underrated. It’s a shame I never got to see them before they broke up
I saw these guys open for Tool a long time ago in New Jersey. I had never heard of them before. I still listen to them a lot. Great band.

Great slow burn! One of my all time favorite bands to listen to late at night.
This band expanded my music taste so much. They inspired a whole generation of mostly instrumental post-metal bands. I always thought The Ocean were their spiritual successors in many ways and then their sound evolved as well.
Man, so glad to see this one. The evolution that happened with this band over just a handful of these albums is so awesome. The music was always more melodic than the vocals, like Neurosis, but with groove. Panopticon front-to-back is an experience worth your time.
I'm still Here! I was really anticipating this one, so glad you got back into ISIS again. They have a very unique atmosphere and a great sort of paired-down sensibility. The long form, gradual building upon an initial theme you described is the defining aspect of Post-Rock and Post-Metal, so if you like that aspect of ISIS be sure to check out other bands in these categories, including a return to Cult of Luna!
so did we is too beautiful. best song ever
Hey! Some of my favorites, especially "So Did We."
Love this band. It’s always my go-to music for camping, sitting around the fire, long road trips, etc. It just makes me instantly feel relaxed and takes any distractions away.
Isis opened for TOOL back in the day around the time they dropped Panopticon and you want to talk about a great show, that was it!!! 🤘
Still here Geebz, ISIS one of my all time favorite bands. Thank you
Whoa, my favorite band. Your patreons are top shelf my dude. What a treat!
Yes, ISIS, what a band, never let you down. Mesmerizing soundscapes and heavy as a juggernaut. More please!
Hey Geebz, definitely still here. I'm a massive massive fan of ISIS so I was stoked for this slow burn. Aaron (Guitarist/Vocalist in the band) went on to make another sick band called SUMAC. I treat his music in that band as the evolution from ISIS so I'm sure you'd get right into it. I'm still here. I've been listening to Isis, mostly Panopticon, for the last couple of years on and on and on. This album has transcended to godhood for me.
I would have liked to see The Beginning and the End, and/or grinning mouths, but I am happy that people are listening to ISIS more
Still here! This band is one of my all time favorites. Discovered them about 11years ago and was blown away. Thanks for another great vid!
I've only recently "discovered" Isis despite having been aware of them since the early 2000s, and have in retrospect realized how important they were to the post-metal movement that blossomed from the 00s onwards. The long, sweeping and repeating sections are perfect for that theater-of-mind sort of journeying regardless of what you're doing on the side. If you dug this slow burn I can't recommend the band If These Trees Could Talk enough, they're fully instrumental but specialize in creating those huge wide open soundscapes that take you on a musical journey! Songs like Red Forest and Iron Glacier are the kind of music I'd take with me to a deserted island!
Oh fantastic! Interesting choice of songs. Isis is something you can really dig into like Between Buried and Me, on a smaller scale. They have made a similar impression on me. If you ever get to their album Panopticon again... listen to Syndic Calls :) What a great track
20 Minutes / 40 Years was on continuous repeat in college. Incredible journey.
Awesome my friend! Enjoyed the session to the end. Isis has rightfully earned their place amongst metal royalty. If you are a student of the game, you know Isis brought it during their run.

now that would have been a slow burn for sure :)
Such a phenomenal sound, classic territory right here. One of the major influences of this weird post-metal genre fusion of post-rock and metal. Them and Rosetta are some of my absolute favorites.
Loved this slow burn, thanks for the insight on one of my favorite bands Geebz! Their albums Oceanic and Panopticon still get heavy rotation here, especially when I'm just looking to melt away.
Hell yeah, so pumped for you to come back to Isis. They are hands down one of my top 5 or so bands of all time. It's really hard to go wrong for basically any track on their last 4 albums.
What a band, i'd say that they're the face of the whole post metal genre, Panopticon and Oceanic are just phenomenal records which i always mention to the new listners of this type of a music. I gotta plug in the Neurosis, especially because of the recent news, it would be grest time to kinda see their path since they're probably the band that inspired bands like Isis, Cult of Luna, Mastodon the most.
Thanks for checking out ISIS! Please check out something from Oceanic at some point. One of my favorites and today happens to be the 20th anniversary of its release.
Man, I love that band. Thanks for checking them out and let people know this exists! Love 'Threshold of Transformation' very last song of their very last album.
Finally more ISIS!!! Been waiting for this :) Not bad suggestions, I'd also suggest anything off the Oceanic album, the whole thing is their masterpiece IMO.
I feel like this video came out at the right time for me. I have been really getting worn out on all the prog metal playlists and new bands to watch. Their all these hyper constructed/rhythmical based metal and I was thinking I need to take a break and go back to some of the music I loved in college and I saw this and I instantly fell back in love with Isis. Good lookin out sir.
Oh man I'm so excited you're giving Isis a listen. Panopticon is one of my top 5 albums ever written. You can just put it on, sit back and drop out. There are very few albums where I don't skip a track or two when I'm listening to the whole thing. This is an exception.
I discovered them much too late and I still hear them on a daily bases. One of my all time favorite bands.🤘😎
In this realm are also Mogwai, God Speed You Emperor!, and Pelican. Less metal but as essential is Sigur Ros. I would love to see slow burns on these bands. The genre shares a patient buildup of moods and soundscapes. The post-rock/metal genre breaks a lot of rules about song construction.
