    How do you align the crankshaft and the camshafts at tdc when they are not in timing. Without the tc on, did you rotate the camshafts individually to get them to tdc? Did you also do the same with the crankshaft?

  • @Motorcarnut

    @Motorcarnut

    5 ай бұрын

    Did you watch the whole video? You can put crank just before tdc then rotate each cam making sure there is no binding. You need all the tools to do this correctly or it won’t run.

    Thanks for your reply. Here is my situation. I was replacing one cam. When timing the cams I didn't realise the flexplate pin did not go all the way in. Upon realising that, the the cam timing was out of tolerance angle with the crankshaft as it had not locked. I then locked the flywheel at tdc and rotated the camshafts separately to tdc. Everything aligned but now I have 130e20 and 130f20 codes. I need help

    I have just removed the exhaust VANOS unit, but I cannot fit the new one. It almost fits, but not the last few millimeters for a snug fit. It’s like chain doesn’t seem to allow enough slack for it to come on straight. If I try without the chain it fits perfect. The timing chain tensioner is completely removed. Any suggestions?

  • @Motorcarnut

    @Motorcarnut

    You have to have some slack somewhere. When I do them everything free wheels the crank bolt is not tight yet so I can check for smoothness.

    Great video! Only my car, I just want to check and adjust, if necessary, the timing. So, the VANOS gears, timing chain tensioner etc. will all be in place. After TDC, locking the crankshaft, if the camshaft locking tool doesn't quite fit, is it still alright to use the spanner to move the relevant camshaft a little so the tool fits? With the crankshaft locked, everything still connected, any movement on the camshaft will cause a little movement of the crankshaft or are those movements so small that it doesn't matter? Thanks!

  • @Motorcarnut

    @Motorcarnut

    No, that means the vanos gear is stretched. I have a video on that particular situation, this is assuming you lined up everything first and when turning the engine it won’t line up again.

    @@Motorcarnut Thanks for the reply. Are you saying that even if the timing is out i.e. the holes in the metal plates in front of the Vanos units that rotate don't line up with the pins in the timing tool (21:38), the camshaft locking tool should always fit properly?

    I am looking into buying one of these cars that needs an engine replacement. Were you able to remove the engine from under the hood or did it have to go out the bottom? I see you have the car on a lift, I don't have one where I would replace the engine.

  • @Motorcarnut

    I removed it from the top but I took the transmission out first. You can take it out through the top but it’s more work without removing the transmission. This it a pretty big job considering it’s only a four cylinder.

I would like your input, What could have happened ? I don't think the crankshaft snout was missalingned , you can not miss it when you put it through the crankshaft sprocket and then the oil pum srpocket, any ways I am waiting on a new one but I would likw to know why it happened . Thanks in advance .

    Wait? What broke off? The crankshaft bolt? You put the right torque 100NM then 270 degrees. I know that’s a lot of torque but it’s correct. When you first turned over the engine was there any binding? Did you make sure you removed all the alignment tools? Like the one for the oil pump counter balance shafts?

    That center bolt has over 500ft lbs and no impact will get it off and shouldn’t be used anyhow. Try to lock flywheel with the tool teeth on engine stand.
