    Starting my removal of my wife’s 328i N20, I’ve been in the turning wrenches business for many years, but only Yamaha Outboard and being a Certified Master Technician, I’m sure I could accomplish this task, but there’s always a small percentage of my confidence that’s compromised, but with this video I feel 100% confident I can finish this task of removing the engine, but the possibility of rebuilding an engine that was ran without oil psi might be a challenge or possibly that’s not doable, in my world we have what’s called an interference Engine that pretty much means when anything like running an engine without oil this equals catastrophic failure unrepairable, but this BMW N20 engine turns over well and smoothly without the horrible sounds you might hear from internal engine damage, but unfortunately with my trained ear, I can hear there’s minimal to zero compression, would love to see your N20 rebuilding video’s or would appreciate any recommendations you or anyone that reads this, would you buy a used engine from, EBay, junk yard or just off the inter webs, or should I send this no compression engine off somewhere to rebuilt, this is where not in my wheel house comes in to play, and I’m like a lost puppy, so any recommendations would be kindly appreciated , thank you for this awesome video, and I’m looking forward to watching more of your videos , throughout any and all of my spare time.😎

    I should of done a video on the rebuild as I just finished anyone, I will make more in the future for sure. If I were you I would rebuild what you have if possible. All the ones I rebuild are usually from failed timing chain guides that don’t normally require engine removal and oil starvation problems that of course do require removal. Usually I get a new crankshaft, bearings and connecting rods and besides all the gaskets it mostly labor. If you buy a salvage engine it can have all these problems already and will have to be taken apart to inspect anyway. And they want a lot of money for them as well.

    @@Motorcarnut man thank you, I’m like a kid learning how to swim, where I stand at the edge of the pool contemplating my move, and it never comes until someone like you gives me that push into the water, to realize that I can actually stand and I can swim with a little effort 😎 anyway yes oil pump failure I actually knew that the oil pump was clogging but being a mechanic myself, I procrastinated in to giving it some attention and when my wife called and told me the oil light was on I just said to her go ahead and drive it home you’ll be fine, but here I am so we know that my recommendation to dive it was wrong, she drove it about five minutes after our conversation and it just shut down no loud noise no bang clunk, or anything cannon balling, and when it finally made it back to my boat shop, I pushed the button and in had that sound of fast rotation without resistance or compression , so maybe I’m lucky, new crank new pistons timing chain oil pump and ??? Or could I fly you down and take you fishing we load up on grouper, red snapper, maybe some yellowtail snapper, I call my boys tell them to drop of 50lbs of stone crab, and pay you for your time and accommodations here on the beach while you sneak in a quick N20 rebuild, and if your lucky the block is toast and you get to come back at a later time…..😀😀 I’m dreaming… or I ship you some whatever, stone crab, grouper, Florida lobster and you video me through until I can swim on my own!!! 😎

    Lol, you sound awesome,you’re in Florida? Love it there if you are. If the engine cranks with no compression like an electric motor then the valve timing jumped setting off the oil light because the oil pump is driven by the timing chains. Sounds like maybe it’s just the timing chain guides( plastic) that failed and bottom end is fine. Got this video on how to set timing. It can give you a good idea what’s involved. m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/a6Kgy8SkiqaTdZM.html

    @@Motorcarnut now I have a headache, I’m lost in space and time now, need Tylenol , but on a serious note is it safe to say I still need to remove the engine to replace what’s necessary, or can I diagnose if its timing chain, guides etc, while the engine is still in the car, I have pretty much everything disconnected and ready to come out, but if I don’t have to I’d rather not, I did find a hose off the turbo that has a busted flange, looks like is was running like that for a minute, so I need to order another and I have two hose that are stuck they might be aftermarket and someone changed them, but if I force them with a flathead I may break them and then I’ll will need three hoses from BMW, my patience is limited when it comes to BMW, so instead of a bull in a china shop, if that engine can be repaired where it’s at, that would be ideal, but I’m thinking it still needs to come out to be done correctly? Thoughts ideas or recommendations 😎

  • @Motorcarnut

    @Motorcarnut

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah, you have to watch out for the pipes and duct work it’s all plastic. That one off the turbo that sticks out and connects other pipes has a 10mm nut buried on the turbo. Now to do the timing chain cartridge you have to drop the oil pan. I forgot what model you are working on but either way it’s a pain to do in the car, especially if it’s an XDRIVE. Sedans are harder than the SUV’s because of the Aluminium subframe configuration. The engine is really not that hard to remove, but definitely more work. I you have a lift it’s much easier. You’re going to need special tools to get everything aligned once you start the timing rebuild. I have a video on setting up the timing, just search my channel for it. I show the tools needed.

    Hey! Thanks for the video. I have completely removed my engine and transmission out of the 2013 BMW X3 28i. I am in the process of switching all the accessories from the old engine to the new engine we ordered. As of right now we are having trouble removing the crank pulley off of the old engine. We have removed the 6 bolts. And still seems not to want to come off. Any ideas?

  • @Motorcarnut

    3 ай бұрын

    Thank you! That center crank bolt has about 500 ft lbs of torque and should have been removed while still in the car with the tool that goes into the transmission. Those 6 small bolts are only to take the pulley off the crank. If you have a strong engine stand and a couple of friends you can probably get that bolt off with a breaker bar and a long pipe

  • @austinlittle1488

We are not trying to remove the center crank bolt unless we need to in order to get the pulley off.

  • @Motorcarnut

    @Motorcarnut

    Жыл бұрын

    Good question. If you are rebuilding the original engine then probably clearing codes will be sufficient, although these engines are all computer controlled, even the fuel injectors have to be put back in there original positions and then you have the valvetronic system, so it's a good idea to have a quality scan tool near by. If you are installing a used engine from another vehicle then most likely it will have to be reprogramed.

    I finally got the N20 engine installed but I can't erase two fault codes: 131501 (vanos, intake not controllable) and 120408 (turbo charge pressure blocked). It's my understanding that the 131501 code is the primary fault code causing 120408. After getting these codes the first time, I removed the valve cover and switched out the intake vanos and solenoid. I then double checked my timing and it was perfect according to my tools and the flex plate timing pin. The fault codes reappeared. When viewing the data stream, the intake vanos is around #10 degrees while the exhaust vanos is around zero. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

    I guess what I mean totally is can I leave the driveshaft hooked up to the tranny since working so close to the ground. Throw another block in it, then bolt it back up and rock on with it?

    I don’t know about the X1 but the X3 the exhaust has to be removed the get access to the engine tranny bolts plus the driveshaft will be in the way as well. But if you can manage to get to them the transmission can stay in the car.

    @@Motorcarnut Well it appears that all tranny bolts are visible and also the converter bolts are as well when the driveshaft is turned ya know... I've already removed the turbo (which was the hardest thing thus far) but managed to get it out in good shape and there's nothing left under the hood but the block. I've removed all harnesses and oil cooler, you name it. Only thing left is the block and starter connected to it. The block has a chunk of the aluminum busted off of it where the car ran hot and busted the head gasket and basically burned through the aluminum block and ruined it. So I'm kind of worried about whether or not bearing are spun, pistons ruined, connected rods bent. Not sure what to think here without just removing the block and examining it closely. I know beyond a doubt the block needs replaced. I removed the cylinder head and looked it over it appears fine but I'm no mechanic I'm not totally sure, however it looks to still be in good shape considering the damage on the block ...When I bought the car I didn't know the history on it and the lady ran it hot so many times that it went into limp mode no telling how many times...but anyway upon draining all coolant and oil the oil was very chocolate milk substance, the coolant appeared alright but threw it out of course too. After draining the oil I poured the oil through a paint strainer and there was a couple of little chunks of metal that was in the pan. Probably off the chunk that was missing from the block guessing. Thanks for the reply I'm just trying to get this thing back on the road as soon as possible and be dependable. The girlfriend doesn't have anything to drive at the moment hence me trying desperately to figure this out. Thanks again

    @@Motorcarnut I do have all bolts in zip lock bags labeled so I'll know where it goes back and also pictures taken of the harnesses but I'm pretty sure I can get the harnesses back where they need to be.

    Sounds like the engine is gone. The worst thing to happen to an all aluminum engine is overheating it bad. The head is probably warped beyond repair. So especially if you don’t have the experience and proper equipment to check the internals consider them scrap. It’s going to be cheaper to find a good running used engine and less headaches for you and faster too.

    @@Motorcarnut (i have a rwd also)what if we don't need to pull the transmission. does the exhaust and driveshaft still have to be dropped or can the transmission bolts be accessed from the top and bottom. And lastly do the converter bolts have to be removed if the transmission won't be pulled

  • @Motorcarnut

    The converter bolts must be removed because the connect to the engines flywheel. And I don’t think you can disconnect the wiring harness from the transmission that’s all part of the engine harness without removing the exhaust shields which are behind the exhaust and driveshaft.

    Start with about a quart or transmission fluid and if in a pinch can use Valvoline max life multi vehicle transmission fluid but BMW brand is best.
