COMPLETE 7.3 POWERSTROKE HPOP DISASSEMBLY

At the beginning of the video, I misspoke and meant to say the brass shavings I found on my Injectors were similar in size/thickness to the cheap gold wrappers you'd find on chocolate gold coins. Maybe not the best analogy, but I hope it made some sense LOL!
Now that the pump is fully disassembled, I finally know why the truck ran the way it did when I first bought it. There was so much internal damage that it simply couldn't deliver the pressures the truck was needing. Thanks for watching!

    Glad to see a vid showing disassembly , so many just show replacement -- your problem came from the swash plate holder rotating in the housing -- this throws the internal "timing" off between the pistons and valve plate -- so the pistons are trying to pump oil when the valve plate in in the wrong position -- that aluminum part is only pressed in the housing , with no locating feature -- a simple dowel pin or locating notch would have eliminated your failure -- but that is the way parts suppliers shortcut the manufacturing process these days

    That’s really insightful! Thank you very much for that. So do you think all those brass shavings were from the internals not being clocked properly? I changed the oil when I replaced the pump and noticed very very fine metal flake on the magnet of my oil drain plug. You think both would be related simply from a catastrophic failure in the pump itself?

    @@ydocproductions5593 Sorry I had not seen the notification -- At about 8.05 in your vid, you can see the location of the small hole in the swash plate -- it has rotated around some -- The small hole is positioned at the highest point in the suction cycle of the pump -- if you look at the valve plate slots, that point would be at the mid position of the suction slot. When the pump gets out of time like yours was -- the piston action and valve slots no longer line up -- the pistons force the oil out anyways, even if the valve slot is not open -- this leads to high case pressure and chattering of the pistons -- so you get the brass chips from the pistons slamming Again great vid -- I appreciate your curiosity for the insides of that pump -- Don't ever lose that curiosity .

    The discoloration on the shaft was probably just from the heat treatment process. There could have been a small burr in the barrel. That would of caused the pump to start self destruction.

    Hi Ricky, no there wasn’t any tuners on the truck at all. I even went as far as to remove the kick panel under the dash to look at the back of the ecm and the factory plastic material was still in place where a chip would plug into. Also no aftermarket gauges or evidence of someone drilling into the dash and also stock injectors. To my knowledge it’s a completely stock truck.

    Hi, I had a lot of issues with this truck when I bought it not being able to get past 35mph on the road without throwing the p1211 code. (Injection control pressure higher or lower than desired). There wasn’t any oil leaks however the power would fall flat on its face. Harder to start, (definitely compared to my new pump), plus the vehicle would act perfectly fine once the vehicle was restarted. On top of all that I had a leaking mechanical diesel fuel pump, so it turned out it was a perfect storm for low low power. This was my first diesel truck and so I had to learn from ground zero on how everything works on a HEUI system. So if your after some more info, and maybe some diagnostics you’d like to try on your own truck I have several videos spread across a few years of me trying to find the problem if you’d like to check them out. Thanks a lot for watching and welcome to the channel.

    I've been stranded in the desert for 8 months. I have a p1211 code and even tho my scanner says my ipr is supposedly 60% my icp pressure is topping at 1200 psi. Not sure if that means I need a new icp sensor or hpop. I'm sitting on someone's property and was told I need to leave soon. So I'm desperate for answers. I was told if you take a 7.3 hpop from a powerstroke apart that i would ruin it. Could I take my hpop apart to see if its the culprit? Could I find the components for sale somewhere if I did take it apart?

  • @ydocproductions5593

    @ydocproductions5593

    Well it sounds like your IPR valve is trying to force as much oil as it can to the injectors and can’t supply enough oil. IPR valves only go to 60% meaning the computer is fully closing that valve trying to get as much oil as it can to the injectors. As for the ICP sensor it sounds like it’s reading pretty low. These high pressure oil pumps are able to make roughly 3,000psi of pressure, so if your ICP sensor is only reading 1,200psi it could mean your pump is faulty. I wouldn’t dive into your hpop it’s too risky to tear it apart cause there are certain parts that need to be clocked in the right position in order to function right. Also there’s really no internal parts that you can buy individually either. Very possible it could be a worn out HPOP. Before you replace the most expensive single part on the truck however, make sure you get a reading of fuel pressure first if you can under a load. Sometimes a faulty fuel system can throw a p1211 code. In my opinion it sounds like you have an oil pressure problem however, you want to test as much as you can on the truck before you start loading the parts cannon at it. That’s where things start to get expensive.

    Good morning. I’ve got an S.O.S. Situation I was desperately hoping you could help with. Is there a way to contact you? Maybe fb or something? I went to replace the oring in the back while HPOP was still in truck. Couldn’t get the plate off so had a brilliant idea to bump the starter a bit to use pressure to pop the plate off. Well, the plate came off but the internals came out about 3/16” and I can’t figure out how to convince it to go back in… it’s where the rear bearing is in your video, though on mine it looks different as I can’t visibly see that it’s a bearing like on yours. I’m Johny B. Good on F B if you feel like helping someone out in a pinch I’d really appreciate it!

    Morning Johny, well I’ve never heard of this happening to anyone before so I’m not exactly sure what advice would best help you but it sounds like you’re in quite a mess. The problem Johny is that the internals of the HPOP (swash plate etc.) are clocked with the internal oil passages. Those parts and pieces have to be in there just right to flow oil to the heads at the right time. I know you don’t want to hear this, but to me it sounds like you need to replace the entire pump. It would be too risky to try to get all those internals back in just right. Remember these pumps are able to build up to about 3,000psi of oil pressure for a reason. If you really need to fix it yourself feel free to leave me an email at: ydocproductions777@gmail.com Also if you want to get some advice from a genuine professional call Mr. Williams down at Diesel Care and Performance.com down in Tennessee. He’s been working on diesels longer than I’ve been alive. You could also call the kind folks over at RiffRaff diesel.com and ask to speak to one of there diesel techs. I wish I had better advice to fix it, but take it from someone who dealt with a faulty HPOP for 2 years, you really don’t want to jerry rig something back together when it comes to such a fine tuned pump like that.
