Comparing the Seiko SKX and the Marinemaster 300

This is just a fun look at two of my favorite Seiko divers the SKX009 and the MM300. I examine the differences that make up the large gap in price. Is the MM300 really worth spending 10 times the price of the SKX? I felt the need to buy both. Let me know what you think in the comments, thanks!

    Great review , I have the seiko skx 007 on the stock jubalee and my skx 009 on a strap code super oyster and the stock jubalee bracelet is by far the most comfortable bracelet that I've ever owned. The stock jubalee with the polished center links was made for this watch, and looks amazing with the polished sides of the case and bezel. Great review. Personally I think that the skx looks better, however the Marine master is clearly the better watch !

    Bruce, Great watch review. I have both the SKX007 and SKX009 and sometimes put them on a black NATO strap or on a Strapcode ENGINEER-II steel bracelet. Also, am I the only one that thoroughly loves the rubber strap on the SKX (and on the MM of course!)? My SKX runs about 2-4 s slow per day, really happy with it!

    Hi Bruce, lovely video again thanks... However having (had) both of just add the following. Movement aside if you do a good mod on the SKX, adding ceramic and sapphire it's easy harder to justify the price difference. I coveted the MM300 but could not justify the difference in value. Too similar! And I have to disagree with you; the MM is waay to too heavy. Cheers from England

    +torgomax Did you get the bracelet or rubber strap? To be honest I didn't like any of the factory straps. The bracelet was too flimsy and the rubber too wide and stiff. I wear my SKX pretty much exclusively on NATO or a soft tapering leather strap and that makes a HUGE difference. A lot of people also like the aftermarket bracelets from Strapcode. I've tried the 'Superjubilee' from them and I liked it. They've apparently fixed the poor fitting end-link as well. The only other thing I could think of is sell it and get the SKX013. Its essentially the same as the 009 only thinner in width at 38mm Hope that is helpful!

    EVILSPAWN1003 Exactly! I have another SKX that keeps time under 10 seconds, although I haven't had it for as long as it took my other SKX to calm down. Nice to see these two models compared. A few remarks. I don't own a MM300, yet. But I do own a Sumo. And my Sumo and SKXs are in different classes. So I can see how the MM must be awesome. With regard to accuracy. Yes, out of the box accuracy with the SKXs is luck of the draw. But I think what should be added here is that any SKX 7S movement can easily be regulated to 5 - 10 seconds a day or even better. Also, personally I like the SKX's standard Z wave rubber strap. When you first start wearing it, it feel rather stiff. But after a while it gets really comfortable. In fact I prefer it over almost any other rubber strap, after market or Seiko. Well, accept for the MM rubber strap, that I have for my Sumo (looks great too, btw!) and the standard rubber strap for the SUN shrouded GMT Kinetics. I'm not sure if that's the same one that comes with the SRP Turtle? I would like that! Cause that's the next Seiko I will be buying! Anyway, thanks for this review. It was very helpful! And keep up the good work! Oh, I just subscribed to your channel!

    +MrFitguru Thanks very much, I appreciate that. I love the sumo. One of the best value for money watches you can buy. As I understand the new straps that come with the turtle are the newer soft formula like the ones found on the sun gmts. I definitely plan on picking up the strap eventually for my 775. I enjoy wearing my Seikos on rubber as well. I hear the 7s movement is fairly easy to regulate. I think Seiko must regulate the new Marinemasters as mine is now running around 2 sec per day and I love it!

    Thank you Bruce , nice video ! I have the same SKX ( 009 ) , for a month now, and let me tell you that the jubilee bracelet that comes with the watch , is NOT so bad as it looks and feels . If you size it right to your wrist , it adapts to the movement of your wrist ! making the experience of wearing it very nice . I´m a lucky guy that has Rolex datejust with that bracelet , so I can compare ( of couse the swiss one feels more stiff , and looks better ) , but the Seiko´s has a good feeling on the wrist . By the way mine doesn´t have any play on the bezel and as soon I screw out the crown , it pops out , and again does not have any play at the crown as yours have ; according to the serial number mine was made in november 2003 ( tough I boughted in feb this year ) and yours , If I see it right on the video starts with a 4 , so it would be from 2004 . I have read that the 7S26 movmnt needs a breaking time period to work properly , but I don´t know how the manufacture date and the sale date gap , could affect lubrication and performance , but so far mine , comparing to the "swiss" goes very well . Take care !

I bought it 10 years after its production haha still running like a charm. Cheers!

    My skx 007 started like 10 seconds per day cuz after a week it's 1 minute advance but after a month of daily wear it seems to keep time accurately cuz after a week it didn't advance 1 minute anymore. New watches I think need a break-in period. I also heard that if you don't wear your watch it wouldn't keep time as accurate as it would if worn, it needs to be almost fully wound to work accurately that's the reason it keeps good time when worn daily.

One of the the things I like about the SKX is the steep angle of the minute markers -in my humble opinion it just adds to the overall depth and "tool watch" character of the SKX that I like. Is the MM steep as well ? I could not tell from the video.keep up the great work Bruce cheers and thanks

    Nice video, Bruce. How would you compare Sumo to the MM?

  • @BruceWilliams

    @BruceWilliams

    +mountainhobo Good question. I've been recommending the Sumo to my Dad. He wants to get his first Seiko. If he does I'll definitely do a video of the two. I think the sumo is the best bang for buck diver under $500. Case finishing is incredible. Lume is awesome, I like the applied indices and bold hands and bezel font. The bezel is a little difficult to opperate being partially shrouded by the case, the bracelet could be better as well. But other than that its a great solid diver that I do really recommend. The MM does exceed the Sumo in everyway but its also 3x the price, so it should.

    +Jason Wilson Nice! I've seen pics of that combo and it looks good. FYI the mm rubber is the same hard rubber used on the cheaper z20 ones. I know Seiko makes a new silicone cased formula found on some of the newer releases but I don't know if it comes in 20mm

    I just do not like the look of the SKX bezel. I don't like that it doesn't have applied SS indices. It looks cheap.. I bought one and tried to love it but ended up giving it to my 13 yr old son. He loves it.

    Ive actually checked all my watches, from Breitling, Rolex, several Seikos to my 50 quid Pulsar and the crown, when pulled out in any position, are absolutely solid. I googled it and SKX has a wobbly crown. blimey, if I got this watch and found out, I would send it back... its not a great impression. the stem is pretty fragile and the crown should be sitting in the stem protecting tube.

    Seiko Marinemaster or Tag Heuer aquaracer?

  • @BruceWilliams

    @BruceWilliams

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Victor Tubandt Im a little biased ;) but I would say MM300! Although I have handed the past 3 generations of the aquaracers in person. Although they improve each generation I still think the Seiko is far ahead in terms of quality, value, and history. I like the fact that impressive technical prowess is displayed throughout the entirely in house manufacturing. The latest aquaracer did feel solid, I like the ceramic bezel, and the bracelet was comfortable. The MM is a steal at $2k. The Tag would be a steal at $1k not $3k Just my 2 cents.

  • @BruceWilliams

    @BruceWilliams

    A lot of people like the J version because its made in Japan as opposed to Malaysia or Hong Kong. But I've found the bezel and corwn action is always more crisp on a K, and I also prefer the lower cost and fewer text on the dial (at least on the SKX). A SKX as your first mechanical is a great choice. I would buy a K version and possibly a strapcode bracelet if you want an upgrade.

I have the Seiko SKX009, perfect, and the Citizen BN0000-04h (300m monocoque stainless case like the MM300, except for $200 and Eco-drive solar, look it up, pretty great bang for the buck) only to hold me over for the funding of the ultimate grail watch IMO without any doubt, the MM300!!! +Barry Benkendorf no problem. The 001 is not a downgrade. It's still an amazing watch. The only thing I really prefer about the 017 is the mems tech in producing the pallet fork and balance wheel. It really helps with the accuracy and longevity. If you get a 001 in the last year of its production run (2014) it should have it. All the 017s do. I absolutely love mine, cheers

Only omega took the bait from George Daniel. I would never consider buying an omega with co-axial escapement! I do have an omega watch without the co-axial

    Nice review. But let's be fair, to say they wear smaller is simply not true. They wear the size that they are. I own the skx and it does not wear smaller than what it is. It feels like a bulky watch on the wrist. With that said, the Marinemaster is the better looking watch of the two.

  • @BruceWilliams

    +mac daddy To each his own. I think they wear smaller than the 42.5mm diameter. Compare that with say a 40mm Damasko with the crown at 3 and you'll notice a large difference between the two. Your definitely right. The MM is the better looking watch. I love mine :)
