Comparing Gas Ported Pistons vs. Gas Ported Rings with Total Seal’s Lake Speed Jr. & Summit Racing

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Gas ported pistons are common in top-tier professional race car engines and high-performance street motors. That’s because gas ports in the piston can help promote a good piston ring seal by pushing the ring out against the cylinder wall using combustion gasses. But gas ported pistons aren’t always the best choice for a regularly-driven street vehicle's engine, because the ports themselves can clog from excess carbon buildup and reduce the pressure needed behind the piston ring to ensure a good seal. But beyond that, there may not even be enough room on the piston's head to locate these gas ports in the first place.
Gas ported piston rings, on the other hand, solve both of those issues by placing the gas ports on the piston ring itself. And since they’re made of steel, they’ll stay cleaner than an aluminum piston thanks to the steel-friendly detergents in your motor oil.
This video from Summit Racing and Total Seal goes into a ton of detail about gas ported piston and piston ring design, and it really gets into the weeds on the pros and cons of each. Give it a watch and you’ll learn a lot about piston and ring engine tech. And when you’re ready to find out more about Total Seal Piston Rings, click here: www.summitracing.com/search/b...

Top notch products from Total Seal! We're using these rings in our 2000-2500 hp street/strip 3rd Gen Hemi's with AP steel material, C33 coating, and gapless top gas ported top rings, with a Napier 2nd for even better oil control. They're working GREAT! Thanks Lake!

I always wonder about crevice volume and how it behaves with gas ports.

I am about to re ring my SBC and mount a turbo or 2 for Tom Bailey's Feb Drag and Drive event. I will give them a try and film it for my channel. It should be pretty Sick

I,m retired from the diesel truck, trade where keystone top rings were pretty popular. It seemed to me to be a good way of getting combustion pressure behind the rings. Surprised not to have seen them used more often in other applications. Curious as to why. Also wonder if gas ported rings are suitable for use in linerless aluminium blocks.

I had talked with a person at Total Seal a while back about using a gas ported top ring and a total seal second ring and was told that was a great combo. I recently called and the rep told me a different combo would be better. I wish the staff at Total Seal would get their story straight. It may have been Lake Speed that responded with enthusiasm. I do not know the name of the last rep I spoke with. I wonder if he was just trying to move product off the shelf that had been sitting. I would love to see the price become more acceptable as sales increase. The price for a set of rings with the gas ported rings for my build, I was quoted over $400.00 from Summit. This is for 1/16, 1/16, and 3/16 rings, total seal top ring with a ductile iron 2nd ring and Total Seals oil ring. I paid that much for a set of Icon forged pistons, rings and pins. I am not running Pro Mod. He recommended against using the gas ported ring for the street. Which is true? - this video or the rep I last spoke with. Maybe that rep needs to be brought up to speed. Summit tech is worthless.

I respect with these guys are saying. But the 6.0 im Rebuilding has 300,000 miles on it. So hopefully my Summit pro l s pistons and rings will do ok.

I'm running a 6-71 with a 5 stage dry sump. Will I still get an advantage from these?

I would think, yes. Any time you can keep more of the combustion gas, ie pressure, in the cylinder you WILL get more 'power'. The effect will relatively be amplified in your forced induction engine which creates higher given pressures both before and after ignition. The second effect of the better seal is less blow-by. The dry sump would by the same, have less blow-by to separate and vent also.

well you can get your standard rings and file these grooves with a grinder bit if you want to; still unless someone independent test this i see no reason to believe whatever anyone says it works like magic

So when you go to the junkyard and get a motor and you tear it apart to Gap the piston rings for boost.. you're saying to just put these piston rings on and you can take care of the gapping and you'll get better sealing?

You still need to check/ set your ring gaps. But to answer your question (I believe) yes you can install these and gain even more power and ring seal. To do it correctly you should really have an experienced machinist hone the cylinders at least .005 to .010 over and hone it with torque plates while using a profilometer to get the correct cylinder wall finish so these bad ass rings can seal properly. .010 minimum will allow the machinist to square up the decks, and bores with a boring bar/ head/ etc before honing so that your bores are perpendicular to the main centerline.

Porting the ring is NOT going to provide any additional pressure on the ring seal! What a gimmick!

How could it not? I'm only a floor mechanic ((carpet dude) You're saying gas porting is a joke? No way would a ring manufacturer and a piston manufacturer have the same smarts as you. 😂 Yes I know this comment is a year old. It doesn't stop me from laughing at fiat earth people. 😁
