    I used to hate TFL videos... now I love your videos. You guys are literally the only ones that actually test these trucks the way how trucks are supposed to be tested. Meanwhile Car And Driver and MT and company are bitching about 0-60 and skid pad grip and how direct the steering feels. Thanks guys.

    I test drove a 2018 Sierra Denali with the 6.2 (if going for a full size truck, go big). It was going for a great year end deal (something around $44K). It drove like a dream, and gracefully floated over potholes and bumps in the road -- Great truck. I was seriously considering buying it, but common sense got the better of me and I just could not pull the trigger on something that got such horrible MPGs (this would be my daily driver). Instead I ended up getting a 2019 Canyon All Terrain with the 2.8L diesel. I think it was a great choice and I love the truck. It fits in the garage a lot better too.

    I'd love to transplant that 6.2x10 into my 14. I love what they're doing with the inside of these trucks, but can't say the same for the outside. In my opinion they did the best on the 14-15 because they had that old school CK1500 kinda vibe like my 94 so of course I loved it, the 16-18 just looked too much, and the big chunk of chrome on the headlights looked tacky, triangle headlights in a square housing.

    I had the pleasure to get a new 2019 gmc 1/2 ton as a loaner vehicle. Put about 200 miles on it. What I immediately noticed was the lag in the start stop mode. Not exactly an instant on feature. I found the transmission was having issues finding the correct gear. If you hardly mashed it would hesitate, if you mashed it hard it shifted more like my 6 speed. The ride is somewhat lumpy with the factory tires. It breaks well, and when you floor it has great power.

The 2016-17 2.7 Ecoboosts have some major problems with the heads and the 3.5 Ecoboost was notorious for stretched timing chains, cam phaser issues, thrown rods, turbo failures, misfires, etc.

You mentioned that Ford lists their towing as best in class but at minus 14% where you were (7000ft)- would the Chevy's tow rating be higher? Just curious. My trailer is #7500lbs so I just look for "enough" towing- but it made me curious.

  • @sreilly

    @sreilly

    My 2016 has a 26 gallon fuel tank, and I get about 15-17mpg on the highway when towing. Although my 2003 had a 36 gallon fuel tank (which was nice), I would only get 10 mpg when towing with that truck. So my 2016 was going further with the 26 gallon tank than my 2003 with a 36 gallon tank. Although, it would be nice to have a larger tank like the Fords have. I wonder if it has something to do with weight reduction to achieve better fuel economy. You're guess is a good as mine.

  • @MidMoTundra

    @MidMoTundra

    sreilly how heavy of trailer are you towing on the highway? My experience towing with a 2016 5.3/6 speed/3.42 it got 9 mpg and it struggled to hold 65 up a hill with a 6000 pound tritoon boat behind it. On the highway the 26 gallon tank is perfectly fine as these trucks get good fuel economy unloaded. I’m sure GM did t for weight reduction, but seems silly that a larger gas tank isn’t an option.

    maybe its the object your towing, its not the weight that always matters. I tow 7,000 consistently about once a month i live in the PNW very mountainous terrain , my ,,,,5.3/6 speed/3.42/4wd/crew cab,,,, got 12mpg pretty routinely again that's towing through the mountains. Towing a low deck car hauler and a slammed truck. truck weighs over 4k trailer should be around 3k so 7k ish. maybe more. i would get up to 15/16 mpg on the very flat areas.

    Everyone seems to enjoy criticizing GM interiors and exterior so much, I'm baffled. I am drawn to the basics, a pick-up truck should have a V8 engine, or diesel engine for towing, today's pick-up trucks are now being manufacture with twin turbo charged V6, V4's, 5 years down the line, how reliable can these engines be? I'm a die hard GM fan, because GM engines are (Naturally Aspirated), No technology to create more horse power, just simple (V8) engine ability. I have the Chevy Silverado crew cab with the (5.3) V8 and it pulls wonderfully, and when it's not working or pulling a load, the tires scream when I punch the accelerator from a dead stop, a testament to what a pick up should do, In my opinion the 5.3 or 6.2 liter engine in a GM truck, is truly a mans' TRUCK!!!!!!!!! Wonderful review TFL, but remember, the average man does not want to spend a whole lot of time at the dealership trying to figure out what went wrong with one of the (turbo) ports, when he can be preparing to pull the next load with a GM truck!!!!!

    I owned a GMC truck with a 5.3 and 3:73 gears. Great truck except when you hooked a trailer to it. I towed a 6000 pound trailer with it and it spent most of the time downshifting into second gear and screaming. The salesman assured me that it would out tow the Dodge with a 5.9 magnum and 3.92 gears I traded in on it, not true! I kept the GMC for 120000 miles then traded it in on a Ram with 5.7 Hemi and 3.92 gears. Day and night difference! The Ram will tow the same load on the same road in 4th gear. The GMC wouldn't tow a empty 1100 pound rampgate trailer empty in 4th gear. I have never owned a 6.2 in a GM truck but that appears to be the ticket.
