Nice job Ronald. I also use a CFL in an outdoor fixture. They say 10,000 hour life, and I get just about that. I run them 24/7 and because they are lower energy consumption, they use about the same energy as a 75W incandescent running dusk-to-dawn.

I finally broke down and bought three (3) 110-volt LED lights, two built into fixtures and one screw-in bulb to go inside a ceiling fan, which seems to eat Compact Fluorescent Lights although the fan is never used… ??? Anyway the cost of the LED’s is still way higher than what could possibly justify the cost. The color of light is good. Now they just need to quit gouging and get the cost down to what incandescent bulbs were/are. Thanks for watching!

I recently replaced two 100w equivalent CFLs (23w) with Philips 22w LED bulbs. I really love the LED bulbs. They are brighter and turn on to full brightness. I justified the price because I was able to increase brightness without buying another lamp. One thing that surprised me is that the aluminum heat sink gets very hot. I have them pointing up in an open lamp so hopefully I will get the 20+ years out of them.

I used CFL’s in a small glass dome fixture in a ceiling fan. Fan vibration can be a killer but that fan is seldom used. The light is repeatedly turned on/off and the small, enclosed dome means the CFL gets hotter resulting in more frequent failures. I bought a 40 watt equivalent CREE LED (6 watt usage) from HomeDepot for under $10. Warm White Light instant full brightness and looks like a traditional incandescent bulb. I think $10 is still too high but the prices are starting to come down.

WoW Ron! This is a really informative and helpful video! Two curious & hopefully interesting items in return: 1~ in 1992 I bought a case of incandescent bulbs for my parents, because they were made here in the USA by handicapped people and the sales profits went to sponsor their self-reliant programs. Those bulbs last about ten-years each. 2~ Please watch "the lightbulb conspiracy" here on YT. It is not just about light-bulbs, and it IS interesting! Best Wishes & thanks again!

Good job on the video. I like the CFLs, but they are not up to our Minnesota cold for outdoor use. I have 3 lights that go on out front and had to replace the critical one at the front entrance with an incandescent because you can't wait 10 minutes for the light to come on if someone is at the door! They are great indoors and I like the color temp on the new ones.

I build my own LED bulbs now, I buy the parts off ebay, the LED bulb and power supply together, then the heat sink in a separate auction. After making several i have learned what works and what doesn't work so well. I have about 50% of my homes lighting replaced, all my recessed lighing has been converted to LED's. I find a 10 watt LED is equivalent to a 100 watt incandesant, or a 23 watt CFL. I have 30 watts lighting my kitchen really brightly. They are said to last 20 years or more.

I have another question about using these CFL bulbs. Are these safe to use in the fan above a bathroom shower? I know vibration is bad for them but the fan part doesnt work only the light comes on and the plastic cover is missing. I have heard a story where the CFL bulb had caught on fire in a fixture like this, maybe they had a bad bulb but its this a thing I should worry about?

Normal CFLs don't normally like wet locations like this. They do make some that are sealed so they can withstand this. Even ones designed for outdoors would work.

is it normal for the ballast part to get really hot? I just put three in my room in the ceiling light and the base has gotten really hot after its been on for a while

I went spastic on stocking up on tungsten and halogen globes when the Feb 2009 import ban kicked off in Australia I really hate the CFL globes tor their dim start, intolerance of frequent switching, early failure rate and cold light from the dollar store cheapies. I found it much cheaper to run a 40w incandescent in the kitchen 1 hour/day than leave a fluro going 6 hour/day

  • @RonaldWalters2010

Yep... they can get pretty hot. Probably not a good idea to have too many enclosed in a glass dome type ceiling fixture.

Now I'm wondering what kind of projects you can make from a CFL. * 600 volt power supply for a radio transmitter 50 watts input? * Other DC or AC power supply? Powering a four foot florescent tube with the output from a CFL? Someone has probably ginned up a variety projects. *

I was once told by a Home Depot salesperson that when you first install CFL's they need to be left on for 24 hours before shutting them off, Kind of a burn in period. If this procedure is followed, the bulb will last it's guaranteed period. Don't and the bulb will not last long at all.

Older lamps use only 2 parts, a condenser and a coil ballast... Those newier screw-in bulbs have lots more fragile parts inside them that can fail, The 30 year old lamps I'm using with just 2 parts total are still glowing and probly wont burn out for a long time still to come....

Ronald Walters Hi, how to test their HF output voltage? I guess a digital oscilloscope would be blowing under such a high voltage!

I installed 12-volt lights in my house for emergency lighting. I really did not like the original style LED “cluster lights” when they were so blue. I now use the newer warm color flat high output SMT SMD MR11 & MR16 LED bulbs. The warm ones are very nice and bright. However, I’m not paying $25 to $75 for a single household LED light. There is no justification at those prices. They’re just price-gouging a new product and calling it GREEN. Get the prices WAY DOWN and then I will do it.

Hi. Thanks for the very informative video. My cfl never went dim, nor visibly burnt out. One fine day, I put the switch on and it won't turn on. Mine is the first one in your video. Used for indoor lighting without a shade, simply fitted into the socket. I'm technically challenged 🙃, can you tell me what might be the problem? Unfortunately, I don't have an idea of the hours of usage, its been around for a couple of years.

They simply will not last as long if they are turned on/off frequently of if they are used in an enclosed fixture where they can get hot while operating (little or no ventilation). Thanks for watching. Please subscribe! That is what keeps this channel running. Ron

yeah....I'm pretty disapointed with the actual service life I have been getting from my CFL's, I too (shockingly bad memory) write the date on them when I install them, and sometimes I get as little as 6 months out of the suckers! But, I know why, I think, I've opened them up to find cooked components/heat warpage of the circuit board with pins desoldered and copper circuit trace snapped! In my case it's down to heat buildup in that tiny enclosure-I just looked at all the solder joints on the board-and they ALL have a weird wrinkled crease around the pins. very low quality unit..I wont buy that brand again!

Buy a bunch of replacement components of the non burnt type for cheap from China. Cut the plastic with a hack saw. Make the repair and epoxy the halves back together and viola. Or you can haggle with the manufacturer?...
