Paul, I am not commenting for the blue books... I have several as I too am a carpenter. I just want you to know Paul, you are doing for others what I wish other carpenters could have done for you and I when we broke out in construction. I am blessed to have had some good "OLD TIME FRAMERS" who taught me beginning 32 years ago. Although I have not worked construction in a few years due to multiple surgeries from oilfield accident, I do small things with my boys, who are all grown so that I can teach them some of what I was taught. So keep up your instruction videos, you are spot on.

Well explained video. Way back in the 60's we used to cut the rafters, for the fascias, after they were nailed in place and then we knew they were straight and we were not allowed to nail into end grain. Times change. thanks

IMPORTANT ....on 618 to 728 I made a mistake on laying out my ridge board , I was pressed for time and a missed a step. My memory must be going south. I will be removing this video and revising it. I hold a 3/4" block against the ridge board or hold the tape 3/4" out. This will give you 15 1/4" for your first rafter spacing and 16" for all of the other ones. Thanks and very sorry for the inconvenience! Paul

...your vids are very good Paul, but I was taught a slightly different layout method: hold *every* layout mark, studs or rafters, back 3/4 inch. This puts everything right for our sheet goods, the edge of the sheathing, for example, will break exactly on the center of a rafter (you have to figure inside and outside corners for studs, but that's obvious) and still be that way when you diaphragm your sheets of ply(or drywall). This just takes a little getting used to, but then becomes second nature. When I was framing and stacking we worked in pairs, our "story pole" was run wild, one man stands center and holds a rafter up against it while the other man nails the bird's mouth end of the rafter. Then the nailer switches over to the other side while the man in the middle is holding, now, *both* rafters. The ridge is sitting right there and the nailer then lifts it up and the middle man holds the rafters apart to accept the ridge and tacks the rafters into the top of it (because until you get the other side right it is pivoting up there) and puts a nail into the story pole through the rafter... the story pole extends up beyond the rafter and doesn't have to be centered. Then move to the other end...it gets a little dicey, depending on the length of the ridge, and, yes, long runs require splicing of the ridgeboard and propping at the proper height, etc, etc, but generally most applications we handled in a quick, expedient manner letting the cut rafters determine where the ridge is set.

Hi Charlie, I made a mistake on my layout and I am glad you brought it to my attention. I was pressed for time and a missed a step. My memory must be going south. I want to send you a square and a blue book if that is ok with you. Please go to Paulstoolbox.com and give me your shipping information, I will send it out to you. I will be removing this video and revising it. I normally hold a 3/4" block against the ridge board or hold the tape 3/4" out. This will give you 15 1/4" for your first rafter spacing and 16" for all of the other ones. My videos are mostly geared for DIYers and I try to keep it simple for them. I am not a framer by trade, I worked on a framing crew in between jobs over 20 years ago and I am not as versed as you in this field. I have framed garages, sheds, and sometimes room additions myself but that's about the extent of my framing capabilities. I really appreciate you reaching out to me and have a good day! Thanks! Paul

...yah, man, you do good work though! I'm now a cabinet guy and photographer and, generally, a handy man (notice I don't title myself "handyman" lol)...I still have my layout stick, which is just an aluminum rail with 1 1/2" pieces of heavy gauge aluminum welded on every 16"...it's 4' long and the stud-pieces extend 3 1/2" above and 5 1/2" below to account for 2x6 walls...it's dirt-simple to use, all you do is hold back 1/2 the width of one of the pieces, mark all the studs over that 4', shift it down and repeat on layout...FAST! I got into the trade right at the end of the track boom here in SoCal and learned from piece-workers so know some tricks...but you do really good work so keep it up! I've been thinking I could do some vids of some of my tricks (door hanging comes to mind...but there're lots more "situations" where I've developed little tricks over time) but that's for the future. I *did* buy a POV (point of view) set of glasses and am messing around with them a bit...but, dude, your vids are pro and so are you!
