Comedian Lewis Black & Bob Schieffer at The Aspen Ideas Festival 2009

Aspen Ideas Festival, 2009.
In Me of Little Faith, Lewis Black offers a ferociously funny exploration of how the rules and constraints of faith and religion have affected his life and the lives of us all. "Quite simply," says Black, "this is a book about my relationship to religion and how I arrived at whatever vague sense of religion I have. It's how I stumbled along my spiritual path and what I bumped into along the way." And he has bumped into plenty. Black describes his hilarious experiences with rabbis, Mormons, gurus, televangelists, psychics, and even the joy of a perfect round of golf, and uses them as a jumping-off point to expound upon what we believe and why-in the language of a shock jock with the heart of an iconoclast.

This is great. I never saw this side of Bob Schieffer. Only the professional side and not the personal side. And while I am a huge, huge fan of Lew, this interview was almost as much about the personal side of one of America's greatest interviewers coming to life. That kind of honesty is like a breath of fresh air that this country sorely lacks in this day and time...

What caught me, and was touching about this, was how many times Bob lost it, and his face turned red from laughing to hard.

A lot of comics use swear words, but none use swear words for comedic effect as well as Lewis does. And the stammering before he gets to the punch line and the hand waving and finger pointing to accentuate a point are hilarious too.

One of my favorite lyrics from Lewis Black's people's holy book is "furious retribution is my domain, said God" or something like that. Yes, Vengeance will destroy you, so forgive and leave it to God. Or it could be interpreted otherwise like many of their promoted, footnoted, and broadcasted lyrics. Do you have a favorite lyric from their holy book? How do you interpret it?

The lyrics from the Christian holy book seem to be much easier to decipher from a perspective of Love or Peace or Compassion. Don't you think? Zionism is evil, whether their practitioners have realized and come to terms with it or otherwise. Wouldn't you agree?

If that AF Academy football coach was the highest paid DOD employee during his heyday; where do USO entertainers, directors, producers, promoters, and contracted PR and logistics coordination rank? Lewis Black's probably one of the lowest paid Pentagon employees. He's underpaid if he's a valuable asset, witting or not. Wouldn't you think?

I lived in co. Springs for a few years but did not have a chance to visit aspen. I did however see the top of pikes peak. Watch the donkey races in cripple creek. And taste soda spring water in manitou springs. All while the Clinton's out of nowhere were in Whitehouse.

Lewis Black. I agree with you !, Especially, about the sit coms!! I consider myself to have a great sense of humor. But, some of the sit coms, that won numerous awards over seasons. I found to be , Inane senseless, mindless drivel.. Just couldn't find the humor in all the stupidity..

It is amazing that intelligent people like Mr. Schieffer talk about God as though "it" really exists. The greatest scam in world history, for thousands of years humans have been hoodwinked and deluded by the dream of a Holy personage of Yahweh, God or Allah that humans can live forever. We really must know that God exists as an impossible dream just between the ears.

I'm pretty sure Lewis is either Atheist, or Agnostic. I think religion at least in the West is used by most people as a focal point for an tempt at some sort of moral core rather than meeting sky daddy. The secular community can do the same be developing a atheistic code of ethics and establishing halls at sort of a place for fellowship and interconnecting. A lot of people need that and organized religion has a big jump start on it. Most people that believe in some sort of faith just believe it because it was taught and passed on and they don't learn to question that faith. I have a sort of faith that we likely don't end upon death of the body, it's probably just a container. Just like you have faith that at death everything ends and you are convinced that there is no incorporeal form that will allow us each a separated reality at death. If time lines are infinite we all can be right and also wrong. If time is in slices and travel through space moves it forward, or maybe back then we aren't finite. There is also the possibly without a 3rd dimensional body we lose hold here and probably just go elsewhere as energy. We with both know shortly if we are right or not.

Another reason that religion may have developed is to keep the very strongest from simply beating the crap out of everyone around them. It is kind of frightening to think that even though you can kick anyone around the block all day long, paying for it in the after life will tend to keep the worst of it in check.
