I expect to cry when I hear this song. Didn't happen here. Great arrangement, lovely voice, but where's the pain and desperation? I also prefer it slower, much easier to bring those emotions across.

I did this in my high school madrigal singers group (sang the bass part) and it was always a favorite. We repeated it from year to year as part of our concert presentations to our 'captive' parental audience. This brings back such great memories. The act of singing interweaving parts produces a kind of pleasure that is difficult to describe to non-singers, let alone get them to appreciate fully. I understand that now.

Pretty slick! To get this song, one must know that "come" had the same slang meaning then that it still has, and "die" was also used for the same meaning. Now, enjoy the word-painting! Judging from his expression, I think Jon Rippe knows. Dowland non semper dolens!

Jon, only discovered you now. What a joy to listen to the perfect collection you made so far. I notice Scottish, Irish and English songs. May I ask, where are you from ? One of the three (or four, incl. Wales)? Or emigrated ((grand)parents) (Austr/Nw Z./ USA/ Canada)? I subscribed immediately. Many compliments. From the Netherlands by the way (with a big interest in Songs from "the British Isles")

On the last line, last verse, are you singing "triumphs" or "triumph"? The caption says singular, but I hear plural. I ask because the music I was given had "triumphs" printed, but someone had crossed out the s by hand. Which is correct?

Hello Jon Rippe, having just noticed your video clips on KZread, I admire your renditions of baroque music. Your range is incredible, from deep baritone to clarion tenor. And the assembly of separate takes, blended into one video, is masterful. I hope to hear much more!

This is (1) melodically and harmonically quite lovely; (2) obviously, exceedingly homoerotic; and (3) intentionally tongue-in-cheek funny. All three points are true, and anyone who denies any of these facts is a cretin, a homophobe and/or a humorless dolt. Sing on, boys!
