Colors in the sky

Did you get to see the recent aurora that reached down across the top of the globe? The colors were beautiful in my backyard.

All my friends online sent me pics of the aurora so I stayed up, but nothing outside, I got so angry, told my mom, she took me on a ride to a field without any lights from the nearby houses at 1.30am and we got to see the aurora in its full beauty

How those colors? The sun storms send out clouds of electrically charged particles and depending on what gas in the atmosphere they react with ("which gas they get excited") different colors appear

i sped through that process in like half a minute because the first reasonable explanation i thought of was chemistry, and i find that boring, so i got to skip the research :D but i usually type the thing into a search engine, read through the answer to the original question, and leave the rest of the research for tomorrow once i realise how many things i suddenly need to know. i just think of the amount of work looking for all that information would take and instantly nope out. laziness saves the day once again. (i may or may not have approximately three hundred tabs open)

I often stay awake when it comes to searching random things up, abd it's quite annoying but also quite funny Two, I forgot how worked up people get when it comes to seeing something like the aurora borealis if they've never seen it before, simce I live in the arctic circle (in Canada) for most of my life. Saw them so much I guess I got desensitised to it 😭

This is what I found on Google (tl;dr at end): "The aurora borealis, or northern lights, appear in different colors because different gases in the Earth's atmosphere give off different colors when they are excited by collisions with energetic particles from space: Green and yellow: The most common colors, produced when charged particles collide with oxygen molecules at altitudes of 60 to 190 miles Blue: Produced when nitrogen is the trigger Red: Produced when solar particles react with oxygen at higher altitudes, generally above 150 miles Purple: Produced when high-energy auroral electrons cause a purple lower border of green curtains Orange: Produced when neon is the trigger Pink: Produced when nitrogen is the trigger " TL;DR: Depending on which gas the energized space particles run into, it turns that color (eg. Space particle + nitrogen = blue light)
