Colorado Transfer Trail - Flat Tops Ep. 4

We have Northern Colorado's iconic 4x4 Transfer Trail in our sites on this adventure as we drop down from the majestic Flat Tops Wilderness towards Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The Transfer Trail is rated difficult by Fun Treks and OnX Offroad, but what makes it so difficult is the sheer amount of water and mud found on the trail after a storm (or probably after the snowmelt). On this adventure, we happened to be in the right place at the right time to rescue both a Ford Raptor and a Jeep Cherokee who had gotten bogged down in a nasty mud pit. Other than the mud, this trail isn't too bad if you have a lifted 4x4 vehicle of some kind, although a full-size truck might not appreciate certain sections when the brush scratches the sides of the vehicle. On muddy days, it's advisable to travel with another vehicle so that you can pull each other out if needed. The beauty of this trail is something to behold and it should be a bucket list item for overlanders, off-roaders, and those wanting some relatively tame 4x4 action (compared to Colorado passes like Black Bear Pass).

Excellent Flat Tops videos! We are an hour and 15 min. from the trailhead and 15' from the Grand Mesa! Your videos are really well done and have shown a good depiction of the varied terrain and scenery of the Flat Tops. We put this area on our bucket list last year and plan on experiencing this adventure late next summer. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the nice comment! You live in a beautiful place. We’ve heard great things about the Grand Mesa area and want to check it out as well! The Flat Tops is definitely one of our favorite places!

I'm surprised you didn't get out at Windy Point, I think also called angels landing. It's a great view point to go out on to

Yes, we should have! We were told by a passerby that there was another vehicle stuck on the road and we were just focused on getting to that point so we could help out. Next time!

Just found you after listening to the otg podcast episode. We live in Denver too. Just got back from the San Rafael swell that we used the trail guides gpx files to go explore. Just FYI , that is a limited not a trailhawk. I have a trailhawk Cherokee and a jlu Rubicon and both of those versions have 2 front and 1 rear tow hook bit the limited AWD versions don't. That guy should never have been there on those tires though

Thanks for watching, I bet you had a blast in the Swell. That's good to know about the Trailhawk. Yeah, I thought that was odd to have a Jeep without a tow hook. I think the 4Runner limited is the same situation.

@xpadventure Yes I've been on it two times before on transfer trail. Next year I'll go for more time probably 3 or 4 days it's a vast area and needs exploring. Unlike the San Juan's that are mobbed out it has way less traffic. I did hit pearl pass this year and it's epic.
