Getting High in Colorado - Flat Tops Ep. 3

We came back for Round 2! After having to ditch our last Colorado Flat Tops 5-day overland route due to an unexpected illness, we loved this area so much we just had to return to finish out the adventure. This spectacular wilderness area is less crowded than the popular San Juan mountains (which we also love) but is loaded with some of the most beautiful mountain settings you'll find anywhere. There are incredible camping spots all over the Flat Tops. Some of the 4x4 trails in the area are rated difficult and should only be attempted in a lifted vehicle with the right equipment. We towed out a Ford Raptor and a Jeep Cherokee on this trip so you really need to be prepared with proper gear and the ability to self rescue (or travel with others). While full size trucks can handle most of the roads, some of the roads get pretty narrow and are recommended only for a 4Runner, Jeep, Tacoma, or similar vehicle. Join us as we check out Rifle Falls State Park, ascend rugged Blair Mountain, and camp in the remote backcountry near Adams Lake. Although we modified our route to include the world famous Transfer Trail, we got the original route from Overland Trail Guides (not sponsored).

Watched other KZreadrs trips to Lake Adams. My girlfriend especially like your videos because you're more our speed - off grid camping versus rock climbing and extremely technical trails. With that being written, do you have armor on your rig? If yes, is it aluminum or steel? Planning a 2024 trip to Colorado and I am enamored with the Flat Tops. Want to see how doable it is for us. TIA!

Thanks Grant! Yeah, we definitely prefer the off-grid style with the occasional technical challenge. Adam’s lake was a challenging road but fun, as opposed to scary. We don’t have armor except for the front skid plate. I suppose it would be a good idea to get some in the rare chance that something happens. We’ve definitely slid on our rock sliders a time or two so those are a must. But usually when you’re going over a boulder field the only thing you’ll get caught up on is your rear differential if anything. You’re going to love the Flat Tops - enjoy your trip next year!
