    I have DaVinci's version and I LOVE IT! BTW What's with the brown spots on the Daniel Smith & Schmincke swatches? Is Perylene Green one of those colors that bronzes under certain circumstances?

    Ah, that's the scanner! This color does NOT play nice with my scanner for some odd reason, and comes in too red. I tried to balance it to match the real life swatches but some areas were just too far off.

    "Here be Dragons!" Nice job! And helpful color info, thanks Denise! My first acquaintance with Per. Grn was Schmincke. Now I have all three brands you showed. Such a lovely, versatile pigment! For some odd reason I wasn't aware that it was a PBk pigment. Interesting. And oh!... the blue and earthtone mixtures especially. So sweet!

    I wish that there'd be even more episodes of Color Spotlight where there'd be an insight about colors such as Crimson/Carmine, Pthalo Blue, Paynes Gray, the pigment information about "hue colors" and why is there white watercolor in almost every paint set even though we rarely use it.

    @Yasmine S. I have not. Do you mean the DS color? There seems to be a real, single pigment prussian green that's not much used, and a convenience mix with that name.

    Perylene green is one of my favorite colors. I adore it. I use it mainly for a shadow color and foliage. Mixed with a pv19 makes the best moody violets. Love. That DiVinci version? Wow! It knocks the socks off the competition.

    I just figured out how to make a perfect dupe for perylene green. I couldn't find it in prime shipping for Amazon Canada so I thought I'd try to mix it. I used phthalo green blue shade, a bit of purple, some quin rose and a little pyrrol scarlet. I love when I figure out colour mixes, this is exactly why I got my Daniel Smith watercolour paints, they make such beautiful mixes.

    Another fantastic painting, he is beautiful! I just got DS Per. Green in my art store sale binge a couple of weeks ago, but after seeing the Da Vinci one, I may have to get a tube of it. Wow, what saturation! How rich it looks! My art store (Riley Street Art) only carries Daniel Smith (every single tube in the entire line!), M Graham, Qor, and Winsor Newton (pro and Cotman), but no DV, so if I want it, I may have to go online. I will have to call the Blick store in Berkeley and see if they carry it in store. Thanks again for another great episode.

    I have Schmincke's in my palette(love all those dusky colours) but haven't really got time to play around with it yet due to just having started on a new job. That, or "my paints are to precious to paint with" - syndrome . I usually use mine to colour my line -heavy ink drawings, but want to go a bit more lifeless in the future. This one, especially the much water, less pigments washes seem like a good colour to paint foliage in architecture paintings and sketches where you would want greens to frame the buildings but the onlooker not to be pulled away from the building's design too much. I'd probably use this for the greeneries in one of those, washed out bluish Payne's Grey for the background and something that dilutes to a slightly warmer grey to shade buildings :3

    Hey Denise, have you ever heard of watercolor palettes by Robax.com? The reason I ask is because last night I stumbled on their website through another video I saw by Angela Fehr (she had one of the 64-color carousel palettes and I was super intrigued). On their website I notice they have their circular palettes and square palettes, both with different shaped inserts. The square palettes have square inserts that look as if they would fit perfectly into the wells of your 30-well American Journey porcelain palette. I am trying to find a way to confirm this, because if that's true, it would be a game changer for those palettes. My main critique with the AJ 30-well palette is that once the colors are in, they're there to stay. So having the freedom to be able to lift the wells out and change colors would be amazing! Anyways, either way I thought I'd recommend Robax's palettes because I was surprised I had never heard of them before. Super underrated!

    I love perylene green! Its such a nice color. I first came to it from schmincke, but have since found a pigment dispersion and have made a handmade version. The dispersion is much easier to work with rather than dry pigment (i saw that you now have a muller) since it is already wet to mix with liquid gum arabic

I have been looking everywhere for a perylene green that is made with a brand that uses honey. I thought I saw Sennelier had it but I think I was wrong and indeed from what you said, it is a newer color for watercolor. I have the Winsor and newton. I hope one of the honey-based brands will start creating this color.

    Perylene Green is like THR BEST (single pigment) GREEN THERE IS! It’s so useful and beautiful and with other colors hard to make... it’s great as an alternative to black for me, and it really replaces neutral tints and even Payne’s Greg for me! I absolutely love it together with it’s cousin perylene violet, they make my go to dark! It sometimes seems to give a sheen, slightly reddish... does the da Vinci. Erosion do that too?

    The Da Vinci doesn't lean red as far as I can tell. My scanner has a really really hard time picking up the color we see though, and always leans them more red. The DS and Schmincke samples had to have a lot of Cyan added to them to make them look turned to life! Weird indeed considering that it mixes like a cool color!

    This is the first time I hear some watercolors are better for glazing than others. Should have been obvious, but I had no idea. Do you have a video talking about this topic? I really want to buy some new watercolors soon (end of year sale) and I was planning to add more pastel and less intense colors, like cerulean and Potter's pink, which is a color I'm dying to try out. But this video gave me a new idea to consider. I usually add colored pencils on top of watercolors because I'm afraid my glazing won't turn out well, but I guess I just wasn't practicing enough. Also, I love the color spotlight videos. So informative. I usually stick to a basic palette with 1 cool 1 warm of each color plus some neons. So it's really cool seeing these new colors and their mixes 😍 I have a question though, how many colors, in your opinion, one can have in a palette before the amount gets overwhelming?

  • @InLiquidColor

    @InLiquidColor

    Hi there! I don't have a specific video on glazing but between color spotlight and Oto Kano's various series (she has a lot of pigment videos!) We talk about them s fair amount. Generally transparent non granulating colors glaze better than opaque or granulating colors. I like to keep 18-24 colors on a palette :) I hope that helps! Thanks for watching.

    Steve at Mind of Watercolor has a good vid on glazing: kzread.info/dash/bejne/kWlsp9uymNmWl9Y.html and there are many others. I also struggle with glazing, don't use it too much as I like lifting colors, but I learned a lot about layering in a botanical class. It's easier to learn using it in smaller areas.
