    Such a beautiful song. It’s a shame they didn’t perform it more, they lean too heavily on the hits, Queen does. It’s too bad Freddie was so unsentimental about the older stuff. He was very much about whatever Queen was doing in the moment, which makes him and them great artists. But yeah, sometimes it’s nice when a band revisits their roots. Queen II was epic.

    White Queen is a fantastically beautiful piece of music, classic "early" Queen ! I've never seen this rendition, it is literally mind blowing. Before I get on to Freddie, Roger Taylor is drumming for his life, thunderous and hugely intense, Brian May's guitar playing is inspired otherworldly, as always, but it is John Deacon's momentous bass that gives this version its depth, so powerfully played, unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable - and I haven't even got to Freddie's vocals yet ! Freddie Mercury sang his life and soul out of this song, his voice so incredibly strong yet melodic, this deserves a ten out of ten on anybody's chart scale. This is music of the heavens, of the universe. 💓

    I think this is one of the best live performances I have seen. The band is completely at one with each other. But the best part is the emotional connection you get though Freddie, you cannot feel or see this in the studio version. This is just a hauntingly beautiful performance.

    **Zenobia** I agree wholeheartedly! I'm very familiar with the Queen II version from many many years back, but listening to this version for the first time through Andy's channel feels almost like listening to a new song. Generally Queen live versions differ from the studio ones in that the arrangements and instrumentation are adapted to the live situation; I LOVE Queen live, nonetheless it often seemed to me that the songs suffered a bit from the translation, particularly the heavy multilayered ones like Bohemian Rhapsody. But this White Queen its an authentically gorgeous version, not just a mere adaptation for the live performance. The acoustic guitar solo section in the studio version, for instance, is transformed into an exquisite interplay between Freddie at the piano and Brian at his Red Special (and that tone!). I agree with You in being one of the best live performances I've witnessed (by the way, just yesterday I heard another one of those truly exceptional ones by another one of my musical heroes: Jimi Hendrix, Red House, Live in the West version. I think that it cannot be found on youtube though).

  • @ZENOBlAmusic

    @ZENOBlAmusic

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@dago87able I would have loved to see that live performance from Jimi Hendrix. Shame that it isn't on youtube. A song such as Bohemian Rhapsody does lose some of its layers live. But performing live does give you an opportunity to do something different to the song. For me personally a lot of Queen's live performances are often better than their studio versions, this is perhaps even more true of their more pop orientated tracks. One big difference with live performances are the emotional connection. Freddie always gave 110% as performer, in a song such as this you can actually feel it in your soul. One of my other favorite live performances is Where Did You Sleep Last Night from Nirvana, also because of the emotional connection within the performance. But technically and instrumentally it is nowhere close to this live performance of the White Queen. Queen can execute a songs perfectly while still grabbing your soul completely. I think the songs is better without the acoustic guitar.

  • @dago87able

    @dago87able

    **Zenobia** Sure, I agree with most of your considerations, although I'm partial to Brian's acoustic on that one, notwithstanding being amazed by this live arrangement. I think probably this performance benefits from the relatively small venue, which gives it a different character than the also amazing ones from big open air arenas. On the contrary, as I believe was one of your points, songs like Radio Ga Ga for instance work perfectly in that kind of massive environment. Here is a link to the Hendrix track on spotify open.spotify.com/track/5s5HzBzcwij0IcJJiz4Cg1?si=tnymLTx1RP638kt5HSnEMA. Hope you enjoy it. Cheers! And thanks for replying!

    Heard a little story recently you guys would appreciate. It was an interview with Brian & he was talking about the first time he met Roger. He said Rog was tuning his drums.....he was like, "I didn't even realize you could tune them. Pretty sure most drummers don't know either. They just get the kit & start playing". Yet another example of their collective musical genius.

  • @mollyfrom5556

    Because Brian and Roger were such good friends they could say things--such as Roger saying in an interview, "I don't think guitarists even listen to the drums in a song!" Half joking maybe, but he had a point! All of them were friends but said similar things now and then, and it's interesting to know the feelings between the members of a band that stayed together to the end. I'd like to hear more emphasis on their composing and talents as lyricists. Brian wrote "White Queen" and Freddie "March of the Black Queen" for the amazing Queen II album. Their duets in the live versions of this song feel like the definition of early Queen to me and I always wish more people would listen. So, I'm grateful to you, young Andy and Alex!

The other thing I really LOVE about Queen is you can UNDERSTAND what words Freddie is singing. His diction and annunciation was almost flawless. I sang when I was younger in grade school and High school both Glee Club and Acapello choir, I can tell you to get both perfect pitch and annunciation is MUCH more difficult than it sounds.

Queen at that time were one of the heaviest Hard Rock groups around, but they were so versatile in intermixing hard elements into wonderful ballads of great beauty and soul. Classic Queen. The best of the best !❤ John Deascon's terrific bass is clearly heard in this version of a wonderful song, he is so overlooked by many - he gave Queen thunder !

    This song is so passionate, from the softness of the intro to the crashing rock to the heartbreaking ending. Brian really nailed the uniquely QUEEN experience in this song. Roger was more than impressive as he added an entire diminsion that was profound yet subtle in its delivery and of course, John was perfect as he always is with a strong bassline throughout. The intensity of Freddie's piano playing was mesmerizing and you could definitely see that he was completely absorbed in every note. Watching his face, I seemed like he inadvertently dropped his stage persona and became Fred, playing in his piano room at home. If you watch closely, you will see him sort of snap out of it right before he has to grab the mic and head back onto the stage, he even looks a little bit stuned. Mr. Mercury without his mask, what a rare treat that is for us. This is a top tier QUEEN song to be sure. Absolutely captivating and beautiful. I got teary a couple of places in this song.

    soak this performance in people. as a 53 year old queen nut since the age of 10, let me say, that this 3 year period from 73 to 75 is freddie being able to emulate his incredible gift about as closely to his album versions as is possible, in a live setting. he was always great live and he always delivered, but you can hear in his tone and delivery the difference in later years than from these early performances when his vocals were so pure and effortless.

    I get chills every time I hear this piece!! (whether it be the studio, Live at the Rainbow '74 (you have to see this one too), or this one) - they bring soooooooo much emotion to this song! Freddie's voice is ethereal, Brian's guitar work is haunting, beautiful, melodic (like always, but it's something special here), and John/Roger, such an underrated rhythm section, it's criminal! Another fantastic reaction guys - so glad you've gone down this amazing path of discovery, it will continue to amaze you!!

    Can you believe Freddie felt self conscious about his piano playing, and later on shied away from playing on stage, much to Brian's disappointment? I mean if that's not good, what is good? Absolutely enthralling song by Brian May.

    Honestly guys I was around the first time and one moves on in life. New music, new interests and one can forget the early influences. But watching you watch them brings me back to when I heard and watched them the first time. So really, thanks for this. Do you see the theatrical influence? He was truly a theatrical performer as well as being a rock star.

    Great job guys! Another superb reaction video. Alex looked entranced or gobsmacked during most of this performance. I love that! You two are being introduced to Queen in a special way, through fans that love and know them. They are really underrated when it comes to the level of their musical skill. All four members were masters of their instruments. Roger played guitar and sang with his solo bands. If you get a chance you should listen to Roger Taylor's 'Old Friends' which he wrote about Freddie. As someone else said, Freddie's enunciation is so precise, I think that adds to the beauty of this song. It's also one of the reasons I want you to react to Stone Cold Crazy live at the Rainbow. It's a fast-paced song and Freddie enunciates the lyrics perfectly.

    Kudos to you both for highlighting the drumming of Roger Taylor. He drums musically, to make the song complete. Roger Taylor is a VERY underrated drummer, and it's because he is such a good musician! Thank you for reacting to this song. The piano-guitar conversation comment was so on target--generally Freddie and Brian did this on voice-guitar. Will listen again to catch that. Thanks for pointing it out!

Freddie is the only person who can make me cry with the sheer power and beauty of his vocals. Absolutely kills me that's he not here anymore, it still makes me cry all these years later. In the studio version, the instrumental part is centered on guitar, first the sitar-sounding guitar and then the typical May sound. Here Freddie fills in quite a lot on the piano which is super cool. Alex, go listen to the studio version now :-)

I've said before that Queen 2 is my personal fave album of theirs, but with the live version of this, the way the piano and guitar compliment each other is mind blowing. You don't get that with the studio version. Also agree with the comment about Roger's drums too. These guys knew how to both rock their @sses off and also produce some truly mesmerising music. hey hey, so glad you like this version of this song. The studio version there is a guitar solo but it is performed on an old acoustic guitar that has the bridge cracked which makes the guitar sound like a sitar. The studio has great ethereal backing vocals as well. The album this is from is called A Night At the Odeon. This was a concert that was broadcast on TV and simulcast on the radio on Xmas Eve 1975, for a show called The old Grey Whistle Test. This album finally was officially released in 2015. Before that, it was Queen's biggest "selling" bootleg since the audio was so clear since it was live on the FM radio station across the UK. A Night at the Odeon is my favorite live album, replacing The Who Live at Leeds. Check out the entire album, especially the live versions of Ogre Battle and Liar (hmmm i think i mentioned the latter to you before lol ). Have a great day/night where ever in the world you are. Best regards.

    A lot of the Odeon stuff is wonderful. Freddie was holding a glass in the beginning because in the show he had just proposed a Christmas toast before they did White Queen. They also do a FANTASTIC BoRhap/Killer Queen/Black Queen/Leroy Brown/BoRhap medley in this show that just explodes with epic, and their encore Big Spender/Jailhouse Rock blows me away every time. You can buy the show on DVD....I recommend it.

    The year was 75. That was their beginning. Freddie was 29, Brian 28, Roger 26 and John 24. Now they are written their name in the history of music. The whole documentary is interesting and the biography of Queen "Queen - Days Of Our Lives" part 1 and part 2. There is more dokumentary "Freddie Mercury - The Great Pretender".

    Ethereal and haunting - a true masterpiece. The by-play of Freddie's piano and Brian's guitar - speaking in a language at a level so very few of us can achieve, yet all of us can feel within ourselves when we hear it, and thus know it.

    You should hit the companion song from the black side of Queen II - March of the Black Queen. But to really appreciate it, has to be studio as it was impossible to do live ... at least the entire song. iirc, Roger said it was the most complex Queen song, with eleven different sections.
