Of course at Wembley 86 Roger does the bulk of the backing vocals on every song - at least he gets his due on that anyway.

I would dare say that Sheer Heart Attack is a better album than A Night at the Opera. There's not one bad song on it. You can literally listen to the whole album without skipping any songs and it flows so incredibly well even though each song is so stylistically different.

I watched a video today where Rick Wakeman was interviewing Brian May. They were chatting about the different bands he was in prior to Queen, blah, blah, blah, and Rick asked Brian how he chose Roger Taylor to be his drummer. At the audition, they were in a college music room and Roger was setting up his drum kit. He was hitting each drum around the edges in a fast, ba ba ba ba, almost like a marching band cadence. Brian asked him what he was doing and Roger replied, "I'm tuning the drums." Brian said that he'd never seen someone tune a drum kit before. When he was playing, he would use that cadence style when he hit the snare where most great drummers hit it once, Roger would hit it 4 times. When he hit a cymbal, he would strike a drum at the same time. Roger was unique in his style. That's why he is a legendary drummer. I love you guys. Keep spreading the love.

Thanks for sharing this. I love finding anything out that’s different about Roger. I saw where Brian described him as being a musical drummer who thinks about every thing he plays rather than just hitting away. The clip was titled Half A Sonic Volcano I think. Roger is on it too explaining his hi hat technique etc.

I guess Rick W would have been amused by that "tuning the drums" conversation - before he joined Yes, one of the things he'd liked about them was that Bruford used a small kit but could actually be bothered to tune it!

@@Grithron2 Rick W. didn't mention Bruford or his experience with "Yes" during the interview, but I'll bet that Brian had already heard the story since Queen and Yes had become good friends through the years. That's good information, Grithron2. Thank you!

The "baby you.ve been had" starts Lilly of the valley, which is weird in isolation and flick of the wrist ends abruptly, which is unpleasant. This album was mostly Freddie 's stuff as Brian was in the hospital with hepatitis(I believe) to r some other debilitating disease. But he does open the album with Brighton rock. This is my personal favorite album. It's all over the place and wild. (Bring Back)Leroy Brown is super uptempo and fun.

First time hearing Tenement Funster was totally the weirdest thing for me - Roger started it like it was gonna be a folk song and then BOOM rock and self-homage lyrics that would not be out of place in gangster rap. Definitely one of those “What just happened?!” moments Queen love to spring on you. I read Flick of the Wrist as the “Oh shit we made a deal with the devil” moment - when they realized they were in trouble but hadn’t yet found the way out. Death On Two Legs in contrast is the scream of freedom, you know? Lily of the Valley is just plain lovely, though it’s sort of a farewell to the fantasy world too, isn’t it? After disillusionment perhaps. I don’t think there are any songs set in Rhye after it.

  • @mollyfrom5556

    @mollyfrom5556

I love your "self-homage lyrics...gangster rap" comment so much!! However, I've always thought that Roger intended these to be amusing lyrics about what a younger, wannabe rock star might say or think about fans and neighbors, and trying to be a "real individual" and so on. Having been in bands since he was seven years old, I think Roger had a clear view of the balance between the music they wanted to play and the show business practicalities of selling the number of albums they wanted to sell--such as keeping his hair as blonde as it was in his childhood, even though at first he had to dye it himself, and agreeing with Freddie about their clothes and image--while Brian was known to often wear a cardigan sweater on stage! I think it must have bothered Roger sometimes be underestimated as a musician, singer and writer just because he was using his looks as well as his talent.

Thanks Andy and Alex for another great vidéo! Sheer Heart Attack it's the third studio album released in 1974, great album ! I bought it in 78 , I was 12, yes I am an "old" fan hahaha. It took Queen to a whole new level, helping to propel them from a support band on a US tour to a world headliner. Recorded between july and september 1974, at four different studios, there were considerable challenges during the making of the album. Mid-way through Queen's first North American tour, one that start in avril 74 (as a support band of Mott The Hoople), Brian May fell ill with hepatitis which resulted in the Spring tour of America being cute short. May recovered, the work continued in the studio before he fell ill again. The other three members overcame the issues by leaving spaces in the songs for May's solos. - udiscovermusic, behind the album, Max Bell - Roger Taylor's " Tenement funster " is one of his rock'n'roll rebellion numbers, complete with echo guitars, a delightful bass line. "Flick of the wrist" is a darkly sinister tale from Mercury. It's a reflection of their increasingly strained relationship with their management. ( It will be followed in the next album A night at the Opera by Death on two legs ) . "Lily of the valley " : for a band who were frequently mocked for being shallow, there were plenty of hidden depths, at least on Mercury delicate Lily of the Valley. A deeply personal Freddie moment regarding his life. This song as in Queen II evokes also, Mercury imaginary world of Rhye, its Seven Seas and its King . " Freddie's stuff was so heavely cloaked, lyrically " Brian May said in 1999. " But you could find out, just from little insights, that a lot of his private thoughts were in there, although a lot of the more meaningful stuff was not accessible. Lily Of The Valley was utterly heartfelt". - Classic Rock, Dave Everley - " Lily of The Valley as In The Lap Of the Gods, is typical of Freddie "world vision" [ ...... ] His comprehension of the rhythmics structures was phenomenal. He was a brilliant musician, most people forget about that, they only remember his flamboyant persona and his wardrobe." said Roger Taylor ( for that matter you need to see the making of One vision, or We are the Champions 😉. ) - Queen Baroque'n'roll, M.E Konigson - Btw Queen is the only group in wich every member has composed a #1, all four members were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003. Have a great days guys. Cheers from Corsica

I am so, so glad to see you did these 3 fantastic tracks. I was getting worried, when looking at the polls, that only tracks from The Greatest Hits albums were going to be reacted to. As sadly more people will have heard them and will recognize their name and vote for them. This means the long term fans who have heard everything, won't get to see you guys react to the amazing tracks we know are out there but we will be out voted. Here is my list of some lesser reacted to tracks. Ones that not everyone will have heard and some that you guys really do need to hear. Brighton Rock. .... from the Live Killers album. In the Lap of the Gods. Stone Cold Crazy. Doing All Right. Bring Back That Leroy Brown. One Vision. ..... the documentary Making Of One Vision. It's Late. Drowse. Dreamer's Ball. Rock It (Prime Jive). Jealousy. Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon & Seaside Rendezvous as they are both rather short songs. You & I. Modern Times Rock 'n' Roll. My Melancholy Blues. More of That Jazz. The Miracle but you simply must watch the official video.

I immediately wanted you to go straight into "Now I'm Here" which closes out side one (for context, "Tenement Funster" is the next song immediately after "Killer Queen", so you can imagine the transition there. (And the first track is "Brighton Rock".) But my favorite track on the album is on side two -- "Misfire", which is kind of an upbeat folk-rock thing with some great Brian May guitar licks and fun percussion from Roger Taylor.

Been waiting for this one! Good reaction. I probably like Lily of the Valley the least. Not because it is bad, just because of the two other songs it is paired with. Tenement Funster grew on me more and more over time, now it is one of my favourite Roger tracks. Flick of the Wrist is one of my favourite Queen tracks overall. Love it for the clever lyrics, the pacing, the guitar, Freddie’s voice. BUT, I was so excited that you noticed my favourite part: Roger’s drumming in it is PHENOMENAL! I can’t play drums myself, but I have drumsticks I goof around with and this is one of the BEST songs to fake it on the drums, they are just electric!

That was tough for you two. You seemed a bit confused part of the time. Flick of the Wrist is considered the big brother to Death on Two Legs, but it doesn't thematically go with the other two songs. They blended the tracks on the album, but I'm not sure why - I should research that. Tenement Funster is Roger Taylor being a rock 'n' roller and bragging about it. Fun song. Lily of the Valley goes back to Seven Seas of Rhye (Rhye being the world Freddie created). The lyrics hold a message beneath, but I think it's deeply personal to Freddie himself. We, your subscribers, are recommending songs to you based on our own tastes and as you know, everyone's tastes vary. I personally wouldn't have recommended these songs just yet, but that's just me. Give Romeo a snuggle from me! See ya next time.

Missy Frye I’m busy today. No time to write. Luckily you have already posted the perfect comment, Missy, so thanks. SHA is such a great album - my highest rotation Queen album. I can’t listen to a single song. Each one begs for the next rack to follow. One last thing: Roger usually played all the instruments on his 70’s Queen songs. Did he play them all on Tenement Funster? I’ve no time to check. Later ........👋

@@hannyhawkins7804 I think all four members played on Tenement Funster but all vocals were Roger. There are multiple guitars and I'm not sure if Roger played some or if it was all Brian. There isn't much piano, but what's there is Freddie. I'm positive John played the bass. Let me know if I got anything wrong. 👋

Finally getting to this. In the art world this would be known as a triptych...a matched set of three. I love how melodically they flow into one another. I just got an original US pressing of Sheer Heart Attack on vinyl so I've been distracted with that, but I'm certainly glad I didn't miss your review. You've spoken on Roger's deal before. I think Tenement Funster really expresses the rebellious and youthful spirit of Roger's songwriting at that time in his life. I love the line, "being poor and young and crazy." they were very poor and very young at the time, certainly. It's never easy in any era lol. Great review.

Great catching up with you guys in your early vids. Queen often ran songs into each other. You reacted to Prophet's Song on another video - that ended a bit abruptly, partly because they merged Prophet's Song into Love of My Life. The bridge between the two songs is just so tasteful, segueing cato and acoustic guitar, into piano using the same musical theme but transitioning perfectly from one song to the next. Worth going back and just listening to how perfectly they blended two really different songs.

Give it time, "Tenement Funster" will rise in your estimation. Nearly every fan thinks less of it at first, even if they like it. But it grows on you, that opening guitar, Roger's blistering vocals. One day it'll come on and you'll think, "Yeah. This song kicks so much ass. How did I not see it before?" Trust me, it'll happen. ;-)

I agree with you guys, Flick of the Wrist is the standout here. But I would usually just listen to it alone. The live version at The Rainbow Theatre is the best. The song is heavier in the live version. I personally like it a little bit more than Death on Two Legs, although I enjoy both songs. The other two songs are very good as well. I don't know why these are placed together. Dream Theater did a nice cover of this exact same version with all 3 songs together.

@Andy & Alex Don't be surprised guys, but that is the drummer Roger Taylor singing "Tenement Funster", not Freddie ! Hardly anybody realized that all four band members could have been lead singers of any band they liked. That is why their vocals harmonize so well on many of Queen's songs - they could sing like a choir ! Brilliant musicians, excellent vocalists, fantastic songs and compositions - who can ask for more ?❤

Roger has an INCREDIBLE range and he could do that raspy voice and then hit these break the sound barrier high notes that were incredibly much higher than Freddie could song. Fred said Roger had the dog whistle.😂😂 don't know if you've heard much of Roger Taylor solo work but he also was lead singer with his band The Cross and played guitar. " Let's Get Crazy" is fun!!!! It's a good song and it is not up with Queen's Greatest caliber music but it's a good song to party to. Rog, the party boy.

sorry, had to jump in 1 more time. Andy when you said (paraphrasing) 20+ Queen songs and starting to recognize the different voices, please do a Brian May singing reaction.( imo he's got a bit of Mcartney in him) you could start with, Some Day One Day, Good Company, Long Away, All Dead All Dead(mesmerizing with those harmonies), Sleeping on the Sidewalk, they're off Queen albums, but you can see the difference between Freddie's and Brian's songs. Brian's are all exquisite.

oh cool, I didn't think you'd put this up so soon! Yeah, I think Flick of the Wrist is my favorite of the three. When I first heard this on the album, I guess I kinda got lost in Tenement Funster and didn't really know when Flick of the Wrist started, but when I heard Freddie's voice I was like, wait, it's a new song lol! You probably recorded the vid already, but I really prefer the original Highlander version of A Kind of Magic. They wrote a few songs for the movie Highlander, Princes of the Universe, Who Wants to Live Forever (also fantastic songs, please add those to the queue soon!!) as well as A Kind of Magic. The original version Roger wrote is in the movie, but for the album, Freddie wanted more of a pop feel, so they changed the style a bit. I suppose you should hear the album version first, but eventually check it out.
