For our cousins across the pond (or indeed anywhere) who may still be in the dark: a pantomime (sometimes shortened to panto) is a traditional British musical play, usually performed around Christmas. I believe it originated with the Italian tradition of Comedia dell'Arte, and like the Italian version it contains a variety of stock characters (a leading man played by a woman, a buffoon, an old woman, or Dame, played by a man, a villain, etc). The theme is usually a traditional story or fairy tale (Aladdin, Puss in Boots, Robin Hood, etc) adapted into a musical (usually a mixture of original songs and pop songs everyone knows so there can be a singalong). It also usually contains several risqué jokes aimed at the adults. Although an old and beloved tradition, pantos are usually regarded as a career graveyard among seasoned actors- most of them feature a washed-up B-list celebrity in a cameo role, and doing panto is pretty much the thespian equivalent of signing on at the dole office (unless you're young and unknown, of course, in which case I imagine one is grateful for the work!). Oh yes, and there are also stock phrases the audience is expected to contribute at certain points, such as "He's behind you!" if a character is being stalked by a ghost, or contradicting the villain whenever he makes a statement of intent ("Oh no you won't"/"Oh yes I will", getting progressively louder and louder). The audience is also expected to loudly boo and hiss the villain whenever he comes on stage, which reminds me of a touching story about when Henry Winkler (of Happy Days fame) guest starred as the villain in a panto, and after his first scene came off the stage looking rather hurt. No-one had thought to mention the booing thing to him (I suppose you don't get many Americans doing panto, and it was assumed that everyone knew the ins and outs of the tradition), and he thought the audience was taking it out on him personally. The dangers of two cultures colliding!

I thought because Jeremy Clarkson quipped something about 'beanstalk' (presumably a euphemism for the male genitalia), and so Sharon replied with "I heard it's more like a salami". This made sense to me since Jo and Colin were joking around about her 'ring' and whether he's 'allowed in'.

This is Graham Norton's 'chat show' where he has celebrities on, usually to try and plump up interest in a book, a movie, show or something along these lines (Usual chat show format tbh). The conversation is surrounding what people in Britain and Ireland know and call ''pantomimes'' which is theatrical entertainment, mainly for children, which involves music, topical and usually cheesy jokes, and slapstick comedy and is based on a fairy tale or nursery story, usually produced around Christmas. Jack and the Beanstalk, Puss in Boots and Aladdin are just some of the classic pantomime productions but there are lots of others. Celebrities (usually of a minor class) take up a role in a production, usually people who aren't ''actors'' or aren't considered 'serious' actors, such as a comedian, or a semi successful pop singer from a decade ago and even 'reality t.v' personalities over the last two decades, or something a long these lines, can often be seen ''doing panto''. It's become a bit of a laughing stock for someone to do and shows a fall in grace, a swallow of pride and a need for quick cash for some, but to be fair, it's British tradition and people need to understand, it's good clean fun (although innuendo does take place for adults to smirk and frown at). All in all, pantomime is British and Irish tradition and it's just another one of those quirky things that us British can't help but love, laugh at, mock and roll are eyes at all at the same time. We are an eccentric lot and have are idiosyncrasies and 'pantomimes' are certainly one of these things that make us weird and wonderful at the same time. P.S, if you were asking about something else, that i haven't answered, then forgive my long winded spiel about what a pantomime is, i was being genuine and sincere with my answer. A loud cry was heard coming in unison from the audience ''OH NO HE WASN'T.'' :D

Its Pantomime. " Pantomime (informally panto), is a type of musical comedy stage production, designed for family entertainment. It was developed in England and is generally performed during the Christmas and New Year season. Modern pantomime includes songs, slapstick comedy and dancing, employs gender-crossing actors, and combines topical humour with a story loosely based on a well-known fairy tale.[1] It is a participatory form of theatre, in which the audience is expected to sing along with certain parts of the music and shout out phrases to the performers." Just instead of me trying to say it and you not being sure what a quite mean, its like a musical stage play.

Let me just add and put it simply Pantomime, can also be used in various ways...but it suggest physical motions and actions to represent something, which every actors and actress knows how to do Fro example: Putting a bird in a cage, There is no bird, there is no cage, but we act it out or more to say pantomime it So you can see a person move there eyes to follow the bird movements, expressions, gestures, props, imaginary props, and act out a living bird being there which you perch on your hand to the cage

oh, it's a thoroughly UK/Ireland thing. It's a theatre show, always around Christmas, mostly based on a fairy tale like Snow White etc. Usually roles are reversed, so all female roles are played by men and vice versa. There's a lot of singing and audience participation is strongly encouraged. It's mostly for kids, but there's also a lot to laugh for adults.
