@@deathrager2404 youve got your perspective blinded by modern day sensibilities. phelps trying to divorce his wife and the mother of his children to run off with a foreign harlot would have ruined his career anyway, that would have been a *major* scandal in the 40s and 50s.

for some reason this scene brought a huge emotion over me, I think its because Cole finally bends the rules as he sees that the world isnt this pretty thing he thought he could make perfect. He also was attached to his corpsmen more than he cared to admit and seeing Sheldon die like this was almost like losing his son.

One thing to note is that when Phelps gets to the "One more word" the part of his speech he fumbles the line a bit. Funny thing, real realistic and matches Phelps' personality, he's not used to outbursts and someone who isn't usually fumbles words when they raise their voice to a level they aren't used to using, and the adrenaline from the anger fucks with pronounciation if you're not used to it. Phelps had no reason to speak so highly of Courtney, so whether he forgave him or not, or if he ever really understood the grievances of his men, is shown here to be beside the point. Right? I remember thinking even at the time "The facial animation is so good yet I've seen better character models in PS2 games" Personally I think it just adds to this game's charm... you can really tell they went all in on the mocap but couldn't really afford the budget or time to polish the character models to the point of other games coming out at the time. Same with the clunky driving and boring shooting mechanics - the point of the game isn't supposed to be about shooting bad guys and getting into high-speed chases... If you're doing those things as a detective, then you've probably already screwed something up. La Noire is one of the only games where instead of going "ugh just let me shoot something" in the dialogue scenes, you go "ugh I just wanna yell at these guys" in the shooting scenes.

Not really. La Noire pioneered the use of motion capture in video games, but all modern games use that technology now. It is easier for people to act out a scene rather than hand animating everything. This is first generation stuff.

@@bern9642 Motion capture of the face, not body movement. LA Noire was the first video game to ever use facial capture. And no, it is not more expensive than animating, or at least it no longer is as of now. Facial animations are complicated and take more labor hours to do than anything else. Every large title game since then has converted to MotionScan because it is significantly easier to integrate over frame by frame animations of every mouth, tongue, eye, nose, and skin movement for every syllabal a character speaks.

@@EOtekk it's not easier or cheaper. 😂. First motionscan (not just motionscan, but also other techniques) is a proprietary technology. You need to use proprietary software and the proprietary hardware. All of which are expensive. There is licensing and all that. It's not a 1 time purchase. Then you have to do detailed facial scans of all the actors. Then process that data and so on. You have to work with a huge amount of data. You need a huge amount of motion capture. A huge amount. Then it's not compatible with traditional animation work, that is you can't edit scans like you would a normal 3D scan. Very few games use facial motion capture and it's almost exclusively for AAA games. Using a 3D then animating that is cheaper and faster. This answer on quora deals with it well. www.quora.com/Why-havent-new-games-used-the-L-A-Noire-facial-animation-method-Also-what-really-is-the-method-I-was-never-sure-how-they-made-it-look-that-good?top_ans=211819404

While Roy tries to play it cool, you can tell that Phelps got to him. Roy has a habit of smiling awkwardly when he's shaken. You first see it in Refer Madness when Phelps opens a can and something jumps out (think those joke cans of peanuts where a spring loaded plastic snake pops out when you unscrew the lid). Roy pokes fun at Phelps for "jumping like a girl" but the camera hangs on him for a moment and you can tell it startled him too.

I beat the game 3 times yet I still come back from time to time to scenes like this. Acting and dialogue here is just superb and honestly when I'm bored with the story in most games I'm really bored but if I feel engaged like in L.A. Noire I want more and can watch many scenes repeatedly. I just love how I still feel satisfied when Cole told off Roy with such a convincing passion ("finally lost it") about the whole crooked circle, it's so extremely rewatchable and memorable it never gets old. And Roy still has that smuggness to say "I've got better things to do than argue the rub with you" because he knows he will get away with it. Engaging stuff this and it's really the type of game I want to play more tbh so I won't be bored with the storylines so much.

And then he has to deal with both the criminals, but also his own allies who are both complete jerks to him. And then comes along this red coat over here, constantly being sarcastic at the worst of times, Cole doesn't really care too much up until right now where he finds a buddy of his from the American Invasion of Japan... Laying there on the ground with bullet wounds in his body. And what does this red coat do? He accused the poor guy of being a drug trafficker, and a traitor.
