Cold Weather Truck Camping

Ойын-сауық

This week I stayed at the Maplewood State Park near Pelican Rapids Minnestoa. I stayed overnight in the truck camper and the park was empty. The weather forecast was calling for warmer temperatures all week, but Mother Nature had different plans. It was cold, windy and the snow started falling around 2am Sunday night. I tried my hand at making ribs in the Dutch oven. They turned out great, however I had to sacrifice half the rack to the campfire gods. I hiked through the woods looking for a prime location to put a camera to observe the northern lights but wasn't able to get a clear shot of the horizon. I jumped on the bike to check further away but came up empty handed. It was all good though, the snow would have made the lights impossible to see. The weather channel is calling for snowstorms and blizzard conditions this week. Next week's video might be interesting. Thanks for coming along on this week's adventure. I'll see ya down the road.

I originally grew up in Virginia Minnesota and after high school moved to Southern California and have been back to Minnesota every summer since then but I just don’t see myself doing the winter camping. So far the first round went south. We only got a dusting last night and today. The winds have been crazy though. At about 7 tonight, the snow will start. You know how it is. They are predicting anywhere from 4" to 24". I guess we'll find out tomorrow morning. Stay warm!

I was so disappointed when the ribs fell into the fire, I let out a loud 'Oh no!' I had to explain that I was watching a camping video and nothing was wrong. Maplewood is pretty nice park and it can get crowded on the weekends in summer. But the terrain is unlike anything else for miles around. Lots of good hiking there. Hope the roads were good on the way home for you. I was up in Devils Lake on Monday and they closed the interstate in the early evening, so my crew had to fight through county and state roads to get home and the roads had quite a bit of drifting.

Another great video, Kenny, I like how you give an honest approach to truck camping with its ups and downs. Tell you the truth, I'd brushed those ribs off and ate them! They looked delicious! We'll have to continue to live vicariously through your beautiful videos as we've had unexpected health news and will not be able to get out there in a TC, so will be selling our '15 RAM 5500 Laramie 4x4 dually crew cab. Thankfully we hadn't bought a TC yet, so one less worry. Luckily, we've had a 5th wheel a few years back, so we know we would've loved truck camping, the good and bad. BTW, this truck would be great for a 5th wheel, too, it'll carry anything you put onto it, if there's anyone interested. Keep those videos coming, Kenny, we enjoy every one of them and have a great week!

I have two favorite bikes. My Rad Mini is my favorite folding bike. It is dependable and folds down into a compact size that fits in the back seat of my truck. The Troxus Explorer is my favorite full-size mountain bike. It feels just like a regular mountain bike while on the trails. The full-size bike is much more capable on the trails because of the seating position. Oftentimes, on a foldable bike, you sit far forward above the front wheel. It doesn't make for fun rides on serious trails.

There are about 20 state parks in Minnesota that offer winter camping. More than half of them offer electrical hook ups. These are some of the more popular parks in the state. Normally, they have many many camping spots. But during the winter, they only plow 3 or 4. They cost anywhere from 25 to $35 a night.
