I could never do the one tool option thing. I carry 2-3 knives just around the house. In the woods it's like 6-7 cutting tools. But that's just me. I'm not an ultralight hiker, I'm a guy who likes sharp things.

52100 is suppose be a tough steel. Spyderco uses or used in the Military or PM2 in a sprint run. also it rust and corrodes very easily. that might be why it's double coated. Excellent video. take care my friend

Cold-Steel are *NOT* making anything other than mall-Ninja crap these days (2017 was the death of the old skool Cold-Steel)! *All us edge freaks saw this coming ... San Mai III VG1 and the classic AUS8a have been discontinued* The original Japanese factory is no longer being used. They have shifted to cheap ass pig-iron blades that are made in Taiwan. I have x6 Cold Steel blades ... 4 in San Mai III VG1 and x2 in AUS8a so I was clearly a fan-boy. *WAS* being the operative word here ...

Maybe an easy fix for the handle - get (or some may already have) a bucket of that liquid rubber material which some folks use for dipping tool handles in. Once it dries you have a rubber overmold on the handle. If it wears, dip the handle again and so on.

I really like this series of knives. I think they are all really useful designs. The wasp and battle ring would make great combat knives, but also the new bowie is amazing too. The hunter and survivalist are both excellent camp knives. You get so much for your money. Also, if you are watching this now 2022-> The new coating on this series is much higher quality, and a few of the designs now have full handles and seem to be balanced better than the older ones.

@ 18.3 oz, The blade is a hair over .225" just distal of the plunge, which is right in front of the guard, terminating in the center of the sharpening microchoil. That said, the hndle is just heavy enough to give it a neutral balance, & i find it light and lively in hand. Definitely more of a combat knife than the venerated Recon Scout, i would also anticipate less likelyhood of the relatively common failure at the guard that the Trailmaster and Recon Scout are known for. Sometimes Cold Steel makes a decent knife, and i think this is one of them. Just my 2c. Peace.

It was formerly a ball bearing steel. It is now supplied in bar stock. This steel is similar to 5160 steel, but it is not quite as tough. It is now used for hunting knifed and other knives. It is better than 5160 for wear resistance. Far a handle coating you can get a plastic dip from Home Depot and dip the handle several times and get a very nice handle built up on the steel.

How does it compare to the Trailmaster? The price seems favorable, but the weight, coating, and uncomfortable handle turns me off a little. But I don't think I can afford a Trailmaster anytime soon, so it's cool to have this option. I've been really turned off by Cold Steel's recent youtube video's though, so I'm debating whether I want to continue giving them my business at all.

That makes sense. The blade shapes just seem really similar, if not identical. And no, the knife vs knife vids were fine, the demonstrations against dead animal carcasses were fine, everything was fine until they started using live animals in their videos to demonstrate their products. Their last video had some guy impaling a fish on a sword. It doesn't sound that bad, but the complete disrespect for the creature's life and the brutal way in which it was handled was upsetting to a lot of people, including me. If being bothered by that kinda thing makes me a snowflake, then fuck it, I'm proud to be a snowflake hahah

Looks crappy but fully functional now. Too slippery without. It's Jan now, come March I'll comment again after it's been taken some abuse backpacking. Say Heah Is, It would be nice to see a video with a nice pair combo. If you did what I do, You would multi carry your knives instead of L@@King at your knives in displays. Yeah, I carry a larger knife, and a smaller knife, Hatchet, saw and prolly a neck knife. So what.,,.p

The newer version is way better. They got rid of that stupid gold coating, and put a handle insert in it to make it a more comfortable handle. Great beast of a knife.
