    I recently purchased one. I am well impressed. I have put full micarta scales on it. The scales go right up the the guard and cover both sides. This give a lot of platform for the finger and thumb to press up to, and in reverse grip plenty for the heel of the hand. This handle is shaped and fits the hand perfect. The steel is awesome. They did good on this knife. Made a leather sheath with a silent retention strap. This is getting to be a favourite!

    That is cool, did you drilled holes in the handle, to put the micarta scales? If so, wasn′t it too hard to drill?

    Probably the king of the Cold Steel blades. It's an absolute beast. The only knife that they make with more elastic resilience is the G.I. Tanto. Version 2 of this is even better. Mine arrived scary sharp as well. As far as value in an outdoors knife is concerned, there are few better.

    These are great! I'd love to see a tomahawk done in a similar style if you can work that out somehow. Even something shorter than a normal tomahawk would work, I think

    Bending it by hand is more than enough to prove how strong the blade is. Doing it with the pipe is gross abuse! But to go to 35° is awesome! Especially 2" from the tip. It is a very good knife, especially with the new handle scales.

    would like buying this with a cast in deeply checkered handle and tanto'ed blade shape to serve as a tactical knife . but anyway im a huge fan of this design upon seeing it for the first time as im always thinking you never know in emergencies if you need a knife for serious prying , and obviously the wider the tang the better the pry strength which is why im always looking for knives with revealed full tang at 3/16 or better thickness . not to mention with sufficient blade guard as once again in emergencies you never know how hard you might have to make a stabbing motion so thusly you want the guard good sized to prevent forward slippage . and this knife checks off all kinds of those boxes so im really interested . and ive already owned securex and theyre great sheaths . and for cold steel theyve the simplicity of manufacturing with scale steps eliminated so they can pack a better steel in with the savings , leave it to excellent cold steel to be 'cutting edge' !

    I wonder if the drop forging improves the density of the steel.

  • @paulopaniago5972

    @paulopaniago5972

    2 жыл бұрын

    Probably not, unless it has some structural defects, although that would be very rare on cutlery grade steels. You won't find much difference in density even if you forge or drop forge porous alloys like the powdered metals such as the CPM steels. Although with that said, it is possible that you may have some measurable enhancement by forging, because of better alignment of the grain structure with the blade, making it, theoretically, more resistant to longitudinal fracture (breakage of the blade in two large peaces, such as shown in the video).

  • @paulopaniago5972

    @paulopaniago5972

    I also felt it did very well on that test. It bend quite well for such a stiff knife. A stainless steel with the same hardness probably would never come close. But he is actually correct, if you compare it to other knives. Here in Brasil, it is common to make thick custom knives with differential heat treatment, with harder edge and softer spine, that can irreversibly bend to 90 degrees without breaking. Although it takes a lot more force to break a blade with integral hardness than it is to bend a blade with soft spine.

    what are the real disadvantages to a one piece design like this? cold handle in cold situations. its heavier. what else?...any input would be appreciated.

  • @paulopaniago5972

    @paulopaniago5972

    2 жыл бұрын

    I am a huge fan of this design, and this knife is in my wish list for a long time already, but this kind of construction is definitely not recommended in many situations. A steel handle can be slippery, specially when wet, which might be dangerous. Also, it doesn't have any impact absorbing properties, except for its weight alone, which can be uncomfortable when chopping heavily, specially on hard woods. Needless to say, you wouldn't want to mess with electricity using a knife that is only a solid stock of steel bar. You mentioned cold situations and its heavier. Well, in very cold weather, any exposed metals can give you burns if you touch it directly, and about the weight... It is not only heavier, it also tend to be off balance. If you use lighter materials in the handle, and progressively make the steel thinner while going to the end of the handle, it will make a better balanced knife, which may give you more overall control of the blade. Also, a handle heavier, instead of blade heavier knife tend to have less chopping power. Although much of that can be easily fixed with some add no rubber tape.

    It really depends on the heat treatment of quenching. In theory it can be 67( data sheet) but if done poorly it could also be 45. 52100 is good stats with its chromium, carbon manganese, Silicon. Makes it forgiving when manufacturing but they usually don't push the limits because of cost and consumerism lowers the quality. The science of metals like most things in chemistry is well.... complicated-.-

    .308or5.56? I don't think it rusts easier but it doesn't develop rust as a patina like 1095 - it seems to penetrate more. I know when i made knives that 52100 was a beast when it came to filing.

    Master Tracker only thing against 5160 when i used it is it never got as sharp as other steels i used but its availability and price were awesome. I think it's best for a large blade (machete, axe, sword) not like the 3.5-5 working knives i was peddling to friends. I think a great way to think of 52100 is thinking of 5160 that can turn razor sharp

  • @greekveteran2715

    @greekveteran2715

    4 жыл бұрын

    It's a very different steel. 1095 feels a bit sharper in the edge but the carbides of the 52100 makes it cut muxh smoother,easier than the 1095. Also 52100 holds it's edge longer than 1095 and it doesn't rust fast as 1095 does. I like both steels for a fixed blade but 52100 is much better quality steel. They both sharpen really easy and fast but 52100 holds it's edge longer. 52100 is more suitable IMO steel for fixed blades than 3V is much more difficult to sharpen and it can take microchips. Ballbearing steel doesn't chip or roll and if properly made, it outperforms or let's say, it's more uer friendly and checks all the ticks, that no other steel ticks all of them, all lack sometihng, 52100 does not.
