Singapore's pigeons are often called a nuisance. However, when they are culled, animal rights activists call the process cruel. Can their population be contained without claiming the lives of these birds?

I'm an individual living with ornithophobia (fear of birds, most commonly pigeons). It all started from a childhood trauma as well as a recent incident of an aggressive bird dashing in my direction and crashing into me. Living around pigeons has been difficult for me, especially when I have to take detours just to avoid flocks of them, and eating at coffee shops has often been a fearful and uncomfortable experience. Please do something about these pigeons, it need not be eradicating them cruelly, but redirecting them away from residential areas.

Same! Very fearful of them. I've avoided eating in coffeeshops and hawker centres in the day because of them. I always have to wait somewhere while my family have their lunch when I realised the eating place has pigeons around. It's such a pain. My day life is miserable. I feel more at ease eating out at night when they are not around me.

But it is not the responsibility of the common people to tell off pigeons feeders. We know how grouchy these people are and may beat you up. It is the same with errant smokers. Where are the enforcement officers? There are not enough enforcement officers. We need them to do their job until 12 midnight.

Honestly if we wanted to control the pigeon population we should look into encouraging raptors/birds-of-prey that prey on them to nest and breed in Singapore, in particular falcons. Peregrine Falcons are known to prey on pigeons, and while they have been spotted here they are not resident breeders as of yet. Perhaps constructing nestboxes for falcons on the roofs of tall buildings (like HDB blocks), which falcons could also use as a hunting perch, and having a programme to encourage them to breed and prey on pigeons, could be more ideal than just simply culling pigeons wholesale.

The peregrine falcon is native solely to the Americas. They head to colder areas to breed too so they wouldn't survive in Singapore nor would they want anything to do with densely populated cities, as shown by peregrine falcon behaviour in the US.

I have an idea for a pigeon trap - build a narrow tower where the top floor has just pillars (like a bell tower) and a machine will spread crumbs on the floor. Once enough pigeons land on the floor, 4 thin metal walls will come down and create a cage that will go down to the bottom floor of the tower and then the metal walls will go up again to hide above the top floor's ceiling and a new floor will come down from the ceiling with new crumbs.

Try solving the problems in HDB high-rise windows , aircon spaces that hibernate their eggs .... not just showing some solutions for condos or landed property or food outlets only . Just look at the design of our HDB buildings , you don't need to feed them , for them to come uninvited .... its a wonderful love nest for all pigeons . It's also a nightmare with complimentary poops , dirty nest and half dead baby pigeons every month !!! This program did not come close to showing the actual headaches that we faced with these birds daily . Sad but true . You could have done far more to show the real issues . Otherwise I don't see a point to this , especially blaming food waste as a main culprit . I am not even living in those high pigeons' population areas and my little HDB aircon balcony is already fully covered with unsightly net and spikes that we improvised .Thats how bad the situation is for me & our neighbours to take these drastic steps . oh I forgot to mention the dirty poops all over our ledges that can only be repainted every few years by the town council .

Why not install speakers on the ceiling that play ultrasonic sounds blast into the sky above human head level at the entrance of retail stores, food courts and malls? Why not install an electronic life size lifelike fake eagle or owl that rotates head and eyes, auto expand and retract wings and makes sound or ultrasonic sounds that moves to and fro the entrance (upper ceiling part) of the food court or retail store via a pulley system (frame it as an amusement park toy to customer, may increase business from kids and families too) As the electronic owl is high up, there are less risks for tampering, at night, close the shutter or a box where the owl can go in to park and the box door auto lock via remote control to reduce theft? Start a trial on a few hawker centres to reduce the food sources for the pigeons. (Reference: www.worldbirds.org/how-to-get-rid-of-pigeons/) Please feedback to management.
