There's been more than 50 PMD related fires in just the first half of 2019. What's causing them to burst into flames and could a modified e-scooter be a ticking time-bomb?

    In view of the existing fire incidents with PMDs, will the authrities assure the public what the authorities going to do about fire safety standards before approving them for use?

    He is correct. It is not illegal to modify. It is only illegal when used in public roads and footpaths governed by traffic laws. You can modify your car however you want but it must be roadworthy to be legal on the road.

    The next important issue is how to react when batteries on fire . How to extinguish it using exinguisher poweder or water blanket. Besides UL is a US standard where other nations do have its own national standards too. Not International per se . Hope to see if ypu can address this concerned in the next videos. Perhaps each rider need attached a extinguisher to it......

    Yes they are. As temperatures increase, the newspaper will absorb enough heat until such time auto-ignition occurs. As a sidebar, the auto-ignition temperature of paper is 451°F.

    What bias? It is fact that pmd battery has the risk of catching fire and it is fact that pmd fire burn down the homes, I have also witnessed pmd fire happened at the block just opposite to mine. She also presents the other side of the coin, the advantages of pmd and pmd modification

    Bottomline is battery can ignite or explode when overheated. Higher charging and higher power output above batteries' rating and packing more battery capacity by changing battery type or add more batteries can all cause excessive overheat build up. Battery temperature sensing protection in BMS is the last line of defence. Modifications may bypass the protection circuitry, e.g battery pack without proper temperature sensor installation, mismatch sensor/protection circuitry etc. Also a PMD heated under the sun may have an overheated battery either won't operate or catches fire. User's desire to have faster charging, higher power motor and higher battery density all adds to stress on the battery. For personal safety as a user, insist on a battery temperature safety test (charging and discharging at high ambient temperature) after a PMD modification. 😏 Voting for PMD parking/charging stations and no PMDs in buildings. 😉

    Come on Singapore. For every fire you can trace to the modification company/ party. Bring them to court to pay for damages for breaching public safety regulations. Why is ground feedback to the authorities so twisted that nothing seems to get through. 54 fires in 6 months or doubling year on year. Also perhaps the food delivery business has to be better regulated to properly reflect the social costs. Are the delivery boys/girls properly trained; delivery vehicles in compliance to current laws; covered by work insurance ? Dont just make share price go up but screw our vulnerable population be it an uncle or impressionable teenager.

    If one has to keep the PMD in in their apartment, charge it in the tub/shower. If it catches fire, it is surrounded by ceramics and metal. Pull the electrical plug out of the wall outlet and turn on the water.

  • @lewisdoherty7621

    @lewisdoherty7621

    @@jiashenghe5504 I had thought about that since lithium is in the first row of the periodic chart like Potassium and Sodium and we know what happens when water is mixed with those, but then the rubber tires (tyres) will likely catch fire. If the battery is already consumed in a fire reaction, there may not be enough lithium left to react and the tires become a major problem. The real solution would be the ability to detach the battery and charge it outside separate from the scooter.

    I do not own a PMD, I do not ride one, I do not even like PMDs, but this CNA episode illustrates to me why I cannot be bothered with local news sources.... An idiotic segment that involved idiotic fear mongering and NTU scientists to boot. I do not know whether the researchers were aware of how they would appear on the program, but they should be embarrassed. First off, the motion put forward is whether modifying batteries in PMDs are dangerous. Of course! But nobody does that. You cannot modify batteries in PMDs. You can only add extra modules. Look at the thousands of teslas on the roads. Or hybrid cars.... Do they burst into flames? It has nothing to do with the size of the battery. So no. Batteries do not burst into flames if you add extra modules. The crucial bit of concern should be whether the batteries are quality products and whether they were hooked up properly. If the batteries are quality and hooked up properly, why should it burst into flames? The reporter brought in a modified PMD. It was obviously wired up properly and compatibility was not an issue, or else they would have called it out to strengthen their case. They then proceeded to deliberately overcharge the battery way past its limits. So that it would fail... What kind of experiment is that? Who doesn't know that batteries should not be overcharged? Is it then OK to overcharge the original factory batteries, but not aftermarket ones? Shouldn't the controller and charger be scrutinised more carefully? Instead of that, it all got glossed over. Talk about twisting the narrative to fit your BS Batteries will only cause issues if the the quality is bad, the controller was not properly updated, or the charger is faulty. Deliberately overcharging a battery to failure proves exactly nothing. The only takeaway from this drivel of a program is that do not use an overpowered charger to "quick charge" your PMD, unless it was specifically built for your setup. A proper conservative rate of charge will always ensure longer battery service life and prevent battery overheating... Thats about it, really...

    Its biased reporting. Done to make the report sensational. Some of the info are a fact and is true but the way its presented seems skewed. PMD are also popular in China, Taiwan and Korea are they having issues? How abt Hybrid cars and Blue SG don't they pack way more charge? When someone upgrade the battery itself so does everything else used in the drive train needs upgrading from controller to the wire gauge. Even the charger. A cheapo laptop charger just won't cut it. Also the cells need to be in a impact resistance casing...not some simple shrink wrap. A simple street guy or void deck specialist unlikely able to understand this. Just to explain to CNA they need several foreign/local associates. Is battery rocket science. Fighting battery fire of Li-po cells has a different approach. You cannot use water as it become a catalyst! Many ppl don't know this. So electric powered vehicles is the future. We need to embrace and make it safe for everyone.

    I refer to "CNA | Talking Point | E24: What causes PMDs to burst into flames?" by CNA on KZread. Business opportunity to make off the shelf e-scooter or PMDs to have batteries that enable them to travel further as it is within the law for food delivery riders. Perhaps special scooters sold only to food delivery companies where the companies sell to employees? Alternate versions are to make the battery easily swappable on off the shelf e-scooter, thus you can use two legal safe same scooter brand genuine batteries without any illegal modification to go twice or triple the distance - concern is rain getting into the battery compartment - however if you take the old tech from the car's engine where rain falls on the car's bonnet and the car can still run and the battery dont burst into flames, you might actually be able to sell a lot more e-scooters and batteries with aforementioned proposal. Please feedback to management.
