Closed Transfer Using the Ss Brew Bucket and Blow Off Barb
My method of doing a closed transfer with a Ss brewtech Brew Bucket and the 90 deg blow off barb. With using the blow are barb, you do not need to purchase a different lid or drill in to your current lid

Great video. To the point, no comedy, just good information. Thank you.
Great video, exactly what I was looking for!
Great video. This is exactly what I needed. I'm looking to do a pressure closed transfer with my SS Brew Bucket and I have this 90 deg blow off fitting. I guess I don't need to by the domed lid and tri clamp setup after all. Cheers!
Great vid - just what I needed. Going to try my first pressurized transfer using this method this evening.

Thanks for the feedback! Best of luck
Thanks Man very useful - Awesome
Did you leave the keg's pressure relief valve in the open position when pushing beer into keg?
My brew monk fermenter has a small 17mm Punchhole in the lid. I really wonder if this method would work for the brew monk too.
How are you attaching the hose to the CO2 tank?
Thanks dude
How long does it take to transfer 5 gallons or around 23 litres? Also have you done this when dry hopping with leaf hops as for me they clogged up the racking arm. Thanks for the video. Using draft brewer kegs rather than corny. Worried not getting the pressure to engage the spring popper. Will try again with a pellet dry hop!
Do you cold crash with that fermenter?
So you do a closed transfer and then open the lid to look?

I get what your saying but remember CO2 is heavier than air. If there's only beer and CO2 in the keg then opening the lid really won't let much (if any) oxygen into the keg. Still safer not to open it, better safe than sorry sort of thing.
Thank you so much for this. How much PSI did it take to push out the beer? Do you know the max pressure the brew bucket can take before it starts to leak through the valves?
@drew1280

anyone reading this, i would probably do the bare minimum to move the beer without hear leaks anywhere
Are you using a low pressure gauge to dial into 1-2 PSI or just using your normal kegging gauge & just barely opening for minimal CO2? Normally I'd think a low pressure gauge would be necessary but maybe not in this case with the way the hose fitting into the barb (so with too much CO2 it'd just pop off).
What size beer line and fittings do you use for the ball lock connectors to transfer to the liquid out? Also, do you need to leave the PRV open on the keg when transferring ? Good video....

Thanks! I use a 5/16 line to transfer the beer and yes you need to keep the PRV open or use some way to relive pressure. I have seen others attach the gas disconnect and hose into sanitizer to keep the system fully closed. I plan to try that next time
Thank you for sharing. Witch size is the Line beer between the keg and The fermenter? 7/16?

Thanks for the vid! Quick question; I just kegged my first beer and want to do a closed transfer next time. How do you prepare before transfer? I assume you did a dump after primary, but do you dump the bottom a second time before transfer? I only have one conical and am just concerned a pressurized transfer will stir up anything on the bottom after cold crash.

Joshua Wagoner the brew bucket doesn't have the ability to dump the yeast and trub so I cold crash to get everything as tight as possible and then use the racking arm to stay above the trub line. During the transfer I monitor the liquid line to make sure the beer is staying clear

Makes sense, in that case..next brew I'll just give it a shot. Thanks for the reply, cheers!
What’s the diameter of the lower portion of the brew bucket?
I know it's old but this video helped me a lot! To clarify, a 7/16" tube fits snugly into the hose barb? Thanks!

7/16 OD or ID
Does that fit in a standard deep freezer, or too tall
Do you get "suck back" when you cold crash? If not, what wizardry are you using? Also, if you are cracking the PRV, isn't that sucking in O2? I have a Brewbucket as well and am just looking at doing the best transfer possible. Thanks!

Provided the pressure in the fermenter is slightly higher than the keg and both are higher than the outside atmosphere the co2 in the keg will be forced out as the beer fills the keg and oxygen will be unable to enter as the relief valve acts as a vent
I see you have a fermwrap attached, did you ever have any issues with getting a small electrical shock with this fermenter with the fermwrap?
@edgehillbrewing6452
5 жыл бұрын
Jezzy Bell yes I have but very small, like a static shock. I now unplug everything before handling the fermenter and haven’t had any issues since.
I tried this today, but after a short time the flow just stopped. All that happened with more pressure was CO2 out the seals of the bucket. Keg relief is open, checked for blocks in racking tap, dip tube, liquid out post. I'm stumped. The only thing I can think of is that the pressure of the first few litres in the keg is now too great to fill more via the dip tube. Any tips?
@edgehillbrewing6452

SolitaryBee the flow rate definitely slows once the keg becomes fuller, but I haven’t had it stop. I’d think it would be a blockage somewhere. I get them sometimes in the poppets. You could also try having your bucket much higher than the keg. I’ve filled kegs by gravity before without issue.
This looks great! Have you had any issues with clogging the poppets or dip tube on your receiving keg, especially on highly dry hopped beers?

No issues, but I would make sure the racking arm is in the correct position during fermentation and cold crashing, then keep a close eye for material in the transfer line

@@edgehillbrewing6452 This is a major problem for me, hop material getting stuck in the liquid disconnect / post poppet. I now simply run beer down a siphon tube out of the the racking arm but am considering using a disconnect and post that have had poppets removed and then swapping with intact ones when complete. Comments welcome.
SS Brewtech suggests to make some pretty drastic alterations to your lid if you want to do pressurized transfers. They seem to have some big warnings about doing the pressure transfer via the blow off barb. Do you think it's all just to cover their ass and to get you to buy more stuff? What sort of PSI do you think you need to get the transfer going?
@edgehillbrewing6452
7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I would guess they are covering themselves, but there could be decent damage or injury if the bucket was pressurized too much. It only takes 1 or 2 psi to get the beer flowing and by just pressing the CO2 line into the bard, it would pop out if pressure go too high. If the CO2 line was connected with a hose clamp or something more permanent, that could lead to some trouble. I am comfortable with this method, but I guess pressure transfer at your own risk.

I bought the 2 psi PRV valve from SS Brewing and may just drill it into the top of my Brew Bucket lid
Do you tape your temp probe to the bucket?
@edgehillbrewing6452

JohnnyReverse, no there is a port for the temp probe. The tape you see in the video is for the heat wrap.
Can you provide a link to the 90 degree blow off barb?

It’s on the Ss brewtech website...
You can use a scale instead of peeking inside.
sorry, I watched the video again and caught the part where you left the PRV open
All that trouble for a closed transfer and then you just crack the keg lid open at the end lol.

Would be nice if there was a option to buy a pressure brewing lid kit for pressure brewing and oxygen free loop transfer for the SS Brewtech buckets. The buckets are nice and more compact to go into the fridge for temperature control.
