Ss Brewtech Brew Bucket Review - Awesome Homebrewing Beer Equipment

A review of the Ss Brewtech Brew Bucket.
I have been using two of these brew buckets now for several months. After about 4-5 batches under my belt, I have really fallen in love with these for their ease of cleaning, durability and especially transferring the beer out the port using the valve and racking port.
This was not a solicited test from Ss Brewtech. I was just really interested in these buckets and I got one as a gift from my wife last year. Since then I saved up the cash to purchase a second one allowing me to test out the nice stacking capability of these fermentors. That detail has worked out to be a super space saver for me.
Overall, I am in love with these fermentors and would like to eventually get at least one more. The only really downside to these buckets is the price tag. They do retail right around $200. I think however they are a great long term investment that simplifies some of the more tedious parts of brewing like racking canes, siphons, and cleaning.
If you are at all curious about these fermentors, I hope this video helps push you over the edge.

    Hi Mike - thanks for the review. I've had my plastic buckets for a year and scratching is getting noticeable so I decided to go stainless - I got the ss brewtech ( with thermometer ) and am as pleased as you seem to be. I got an Anvil fermenter for a secondary - not so good but great as a secondary. Intend to get a second brewbucket from Santa ! Love you Guys videos - merry Christmas from sunny Colorado.

    I have had one for about a year and really like it. Real easy to clean. I opted for the blow off tube elbow instead of an airlock. You can cold crash with it without any suck back if you coil up 10 feet of tubing. The liquid never gets that far.

    Had mine for about a year now and it's been great and I agree with all the points you made. Every so often Ebay has a "coupon" for 15-20% off that works on just about anything and you can pick one of these up for 160-175 bucks that way, if anyone wants to get a bit of a discount but still get a new one. I use a temp controller with the probe taped to the side (I put a folded cloth on the outside to help keep the probe isolated from the ambient air). Heat wrap and a fridge and I can keep the temps pretty consistent. I'm sure there is some difference between the outside of the bucket and the liquid inside, but I've had great success with it. You can also do a pseudo pressurized transfer using the blowoff fitting on the lid. It's a bit tricky, but you can minimized O2 if that's your goal. It's not meant to hold pressure really, but with 1-2 psi it is doable.

    Thanks for the vid. Several people, after watching my fermenter videos last year, have suggested that I should look into these. Looks promising, but still have two reservations: 1) Is it easy to carry around a house and up/down stairs? Are the handles certified to bear the full weight with wort? Other equipment I’ve seen with handles like this are only useful when empty. 2) without the thermowell option, how do you check temperature? A sticker like is common on carboys?

    Great review. Thanks you. Absolutely a future purchase for me. One quick question I was hoping you could answer. I have a 7 cubic foot chest freezer ferm chamber that fits two standard plastic fermenting buckets same as the one under the ss fermenter in your video. Would two of these SS fermenters be comparable enough in size to the plastic buckets that I could fit two of them in my ferm chamber? I have maybe 2-3 inches of play as it is now. Thanks for any input!

  • @BrewDudes

    @BrewDudes

    I think plastic buckets are less wide than the Ss Brewtech buckets. From their site: 20.6" height x 12.5" width. Note that height does NOT include stopper, bubbler, and blow off setup you have, etc. This is only to the top surface of the lid. Add a few inches depending on what you use up there and of course using a blow off tube or a 90-degree elbow tube coming out of your stopper can save some height as well if you are fermenting in a tight space.

    Nice review! I was wondering if have used the racking arm to dump the trub and the yeast from the bottom once primary is done ? I’ve noticed other conical fermenters have an extra tap to dump the trub but was curious if you could achieve the same outcome with the rotable racking arm with the fermenter :)?

  • @BrewDudes

    @BrewDudes

    4 жыл бұрын

    The racking arm isn't deep enough to suck out all the trub nor is it really a wide enough diameter really. So it hasn't been my experience that you could get the trub/yeast out like in a conical. But not that you need to either, IMO. Cheers! -Mike

I was looking at this and the spike ferementer but cant find a real reason to choose the Spike. Have you had any experience with the FTSs2 chilling/heating combo? • @BrewDudes

    It is a cool combo, but I can't justify the expense either. I have plenty of empty fridge space and external thermostats. That works fine for me most of the time. I can use a heat wrap too if need be. I love my brewtech buckets. Easy to clean, easy to transfer in and out of, stackable, good heat transference and durable. Sure some ports for pressure transfers and hop drops would be nice but I'd rather have multiple fermentors available rather than spend all my budget on one feature rich piece with more parts to clean and worry about. Cheers! -Mike

    Hey Mike, big fan of the buckets. For future reference if you decide to get a blow-off, SS Brewtech actually sells a 90 degree elbow that fits right into the hole in the top of the lid. It gives you a nice hose barb that you can then stick a 1/2 or 5/8 hose onto (I forget exactly which size..) Also, you can attach a CO2 line to it and use a little pressure to do closed transfers into your keg, if you're into that sort of thing. Theres pictures and a few video clips of me using mine in this manner on my Instagram and Facebook pages if this description is confusing. Just search @highhatbrewing. Cheers!

    Nice product, I have some SS Brewtech , 10 gallon kettle which I converted into a mash tun with 1/2" pipe work and camlocks and a Kegland pump. I like the SS Brewtech ss brew buckets but want the option to brew under pressure 10 Psi. The gasket under the lid, how much pressure can it hold? I know SS Brewtech do a pressure kit for the chronicle fermenters but would be nice to have something compact to go in a fridge for temperature control. The other benefits of pressure brewing are less yeast easters, less chance of bacterial infections, faster ferment time, Lagering time,clears up super fast, forces sediment to the bottom fast, oxygen free loop transfer.

    You can’t access the trub it’s generally below the level of the racking arm. 80+% is left in the bucket. So unfortunately it’s not possible to bottle from the bucket. But it’s still easier to use the racking port than starting a siphon to get beer out of a regular fermentor.

    Does anybody knows why ssbrewtech pairs their 10 gal kettles with 7 gal fermenters? is there as much as 3 gal loss from boil to fermenter?

  • @BrewDudes

    @BrewDudes

    4 жыл бұрын

    Here's my take on it. It's not really about loss its about head space. I put 5.5-5.75 gallons in my fermentors, I suspect many people do similarly. This ensures that I can get 5-5.25 gallons in my keg at the end. A 7 gallon fermentor is just enough head space for the Krausen without worrying too much about blow off. Similarly I boil down to 6-6.25 gallons of beer. My preboil volume is 8-8.5 gallons. The 10 gallon kettle provides the needed headspace to prevent boil over. IMO, the 7 gallon and 10 gallon combo has been pretty much the standard. In fact many fermentors were only 6 gallons and it made for many fermentor blow offs which is a pain. Good question. Thanks. -Mike

    Thanks for your review...definitely going stainless steel is in my opinion the way to go..... I don’t have one of these Ss but do own Anvil’s equivalent.... and it is a great product too....but I am thinking about buying a second fermenting bucket and I may give this one a try..... the other fact hat I love is that if your brewing day goes too long..... say Sunday you can just transfer the hot wort into it and stash it to your fermentation fridge..... anybody owns both and can give any quick suggestion!?

    I like the flexibility of Stainless too. I think a lot less now about adequate cleaning/sanitation as well as light and oxygen concerns. Cheers! -Mike

    Of course! Why not? If you make 5 gallon batches of mead this would be perfect. Its just a bucket. I've made cider in mine too. Cheers! -Mike

    I do wine making, I do secondary in 23 litres carboys, I do two rackings so I save the excess in wine bottles from the first racking to top up after the second racking. What this means is I need to do 30 litre (8 gallon) batches, which is a problem because the SS brew bucket only comes in 7 gallon and 13 gallon. :( Anyone aware of a product like the SS Brew Bucket but that comes in a 30 litre/8 gallon size?

    I use Spiedel high quality plastic fermenters. They are 7.9 gallons if that works. Great handles and wide opening. I like them

    How do you use a blow off tube?

  • @BrewDudes

    @BrewDudes

    Like I mentioned I haven't needed one yet, but I have been thinking of it. The beet I racked in the video was the first one where I had Krausen up under the lid. That said a blow off tube is a simple as pushing a small piece of ridge tubing (like copper or a cut down piece of plastic racking cane) into the stopper. Then attaching a longer hose onto that and running it into a catch vessel. I'd be willing to bet you could find large enough diameter soft tubing that you could jam right into the hole in the lid without a stopper. I might try that and post it if it works. -Mike
