Clone Windows to a New Bigger SSD for FREE | using Macrium Reflect

This last week I put a new 1 TB Samsung 980 Pro M.2 NVME SSD into my computer, and today I swapped out my old 256 GB SSD that came with the computer (a Lenovo Legion Tower 5) and I needed to clone or transfer that boot drive that has windows on it before I took it out. This is not necessarily a tutorial, but more of a "what I did" that you can use as a tutorial. Hopefully its helpful.
I spent a lot of time so you don't have to finding a FREE service that's actually free, and actually works!

The program I used is called "Macrium Reflect". You can download the software from their website here:

I quite agree! It is helpful to see what you did 'wrong' and how you fixed it... so we can do it right and watch out to not make the same mistake you did. My first thought was to do what you did the first time around. lol. And yes, I came to your video because so many videos suggest Aomei... only to find the paywall. :(

Thank you Grant, I followed your instructions using Macrium Reflect v8.0. Made sure the C:/ was last, the only difference is that you do not have to add the extra space manually, v8 have a button that ask you if you want to add the extra space. Honestly, I could not have completed the job successfully without your instructions. Again, thank you very much and greetings from Europe.

Bro, I have been wanting to do this for soooo many years, and I followed exactly what you did (at 15 minutes, of course). It works perfectly! There were no problems whatsoever, Macrium Reflect worked in 19 minutes from a 125 GB SSD to a 1 TB SSD using a hard drive docking station. Can't thank you enough for figuring out the problems and showing the right way to do it!

for those who find this video now with Macrium Reflect 8 Free released, they changed one part in the cloning progress which is at around 16:37 in this video. Instead of the text saying "Cloned Partition Properties" you select the tool Symbol above your view of the drive you want to copy to from the old one namen "Layout". You then have the exact same steps as in this video. :)

This is exactly what I was looking for when installing a larger drive.. There is however a way to keep the partitions in sequence. Drag them down as you did initially then click on the last partition and select float right. Finally resize the main partition as you did (click on it and select fill space)

I first tried cloning my smaller SSD to a new larger SSD using Paragon Hard Disk Manager 17 Advanced. The process wasn't complicated...however, it took 3.5 hrs...after which the cloned drive WOULD NOT BOOT! Womp, womp 😟. Afterward, I put the old drive back in my system, did more research, and found this video. I followed the process outlined from the 15:13 mark onward using Macrium Reflect Free...and after a relatively short ~45 minute process, the drive was cloned, and Bob's your uncle - it booted right up PERFECTLY 😎! Well done Grant 👌!!! This is the first of your videos that I've encountered...but I'd dreaded this task for some time...and your excellent tutorial made the task quite straightforward. Thank you 🙏! At last SOMEONE explains why my cloning operation was failing! I had to search KZread for the newest posting on cloning, and Grant's video came up as the winner. At 15:15, he perfectly explains the issue I was having, namely that after cloning, I had this small partition between the C: partition and the newly-available space, and could not extend the new C: partition. Nope, could not do it. The key point that I missed is that when using the Macrium cloning software, after you have selected your drive to clone, then right-click on your new destination drive to remove each partition, one-by-one. Once you have "cleared the deck" on the destination drive this way, ONLY THEN can you drag and drop the source partitions to the destination drive to re-arrange the order of the partitions!!!! No one else said a damned thing about it in the other vids! So yes, do what Grant says, after which in Disk Management you can extend your new drive's available space via Disk Management's right-click "extend volume" command. Poof! It works! Jeez. It's simple once you see it, but no one else pointed it out. Thanks, Grant. You were as exasperated as I was!!!!

@@GrantButler My generic search was "clone one SSD to another SSD," but most of the videos are 1-4 years old, featuring old versions of Windows and Macrium. The software they demonstrated did not look anything like it looks today. Hence, I selected yours because it was only 4 months old. Not a one of them mentioned how to change the stackup of the partitions, as you encountered. Even the SW you show is not how the Macrium SW looks today. BTW: my cloning operation, while appearing successful, does not work if the PC's SSD is soldered to the board, such as the "MeLE Quieter3Q fanless PC." You cannot remove this on-board SSD after the cloning. It must remain. So I got in and fiddled with the BIOS, changing the boot order to put the NVMe at the top of the order. When I do that, the PC won't boot, stuck in an endless Restart cycle. I'm 100% sure I had successfully cloned the on-board SSD and made the correct BIOS settings, but this particular PC won't let you boot from anything except the on-board SSD, period! I cannot find any video anywhere of anyone trying to make this swap on the Quieter3Q. Go buy one (they're cheap) and try it. I'd love to see someone who claims to know his stuff do it on this little PC.

Well I don't know if anyone else has experienced this. A year has passed since the last comment on here. Can't see a free version of Macriam 7, there's now only a "free30 day trial" version of Macrium 8. This wouldn't be any trouble to me as I only need to use it once at the moment except downloading downloads their own installer which THEN tries to download the free version and throws an error. Checking the error log tells me that it thinks I don't have enough space. I have pointed it at the E drive. The E drive has 1.4 TB of space free... May try making a tiny bit of extra space on C just in case it's trying to install a small amount on there as well as E (I had that happen with other software before).

I did what you did, but i did not remove the drive I simply went into my BIOS and set the 2TB new drive as first boot saved it and rebooted. Windows booted no problem and the 2TB new boot drive showed as Drive c: and the old 500GB shows ad Drive E:, backed up drive E and formatted the 500GB all great. So no need to swap them out to test just set the boot drive in the BIOS Again thank you for this amazing help

Hey, question, so this is going to be my first time doing this. You first "Cloned Windows to a New Bigger SSD" using the "Macrium Reflect" program, then you permanently removed the original 256 GB SSD card, and then replaced it with the "1 TB Samsung 980 Pro M.2 NVME SSD". It that the correct order? Could you first replace the SSD card and then run the "Macrium Reflect" program? I was just wondering if the order mattered?

You should really leave the partitions in the same order they were before.. Besides, you really didn't need to do that to resize the C drive in the first place. With Macrium you could have just left them in the correct order and once you got to the c drive, hit "layout" and there you could drag the little slider over to resize it (or type it in manually). Then just make sure you leave enough room for the last partition, and you'd be good- same partition order and a larger c drive. Or after making an exact copy like you did the first time, you could have just resized it afterwards using the "extend volume" option in disk management. Though, I personally prefer to have the drive resized from the get-go. It just feels better to start out with it that way imo.
