Climbing Mt. St. Helens: The Crater Rim & Summit via Worm Flows

This was a one day ascent of Mt. St. Helens, via the Worm Flows route, on March 13, 2021. Mt. St. Helens is a great early season peak to climb for several reasons. If you are a beginner, it is a great peak to gain experience on in the basics of mountaineering. In the winter, the route is covered with lots of ice and snow, which makes for efficient and quick cramponing up the slopes. It is a great trainer for future climbs in the season. There is also no quota during the winter months which makes for easy scheduling; you can go whenever the weather break happens. Enjoy!

Thank You for watching and good luck to you. The last I looked that part of the Cascades is way above average in snow pack this year. Should have a good solid route up the mountain. Safe travels.

Thank You Aunt Vikki. The glissade down St. Helens is well worth the efforts to get to the crater rim.

I cannot believe how crowded it's become compared to 20 years ago. It was a perfect day like yours and the skiing was great.

Yes, I think the majority of people where skiing. Lots of good wholesome fun for everybody. On this trip cars were parked all the way out and down the road from the snow park. Definitely not enough parking room to accommodate the demand.

Thank you for sharing. WOW, I should have watch this 1st. We just hiked this on March 17/2024. Took off at 1:15 AM and made it to the crater rim at 8:15 am. For me hiking in the dark was very HARD to a point that I thought the is something wrong with my heart but it was not. The moment the sunlight started to come out all that pressure on my chest went away. Was this only in my head or this hiking in the dark is not for me. Same thing it happened last year in August on Mt. Adams and I turned back at 9200 ft.

Wow! Congratulations on making the Rim. Fantastic view from there. Climbing in the dark is creepy for sure. I find it is best to reframe my thoughts and use it as on opportunity to focus. There is nothing in the world in that moment but you and that snow slope, everything else does not matter. Or just set out a little later. Break free of the trees as the sun is rising. As long as it is still cool, there is that safe window till noon to climbing safely on snow. Take care.

Great video. I have hiked Mt St Helens a few times, but always via the Monitor Ridge route. Do you know if the Monitor Ridge and Worm Flows trails intersect at any point in the hike? I remember seeing comments on WTA or WH&C where hikers ended up going back down the Monitor Ridge trail by mistake. I have passes for June 16th (which might require use of Worm Flows) and I just want to avoid taking the wrong trail back down. Thank you and I enjoyed the video.

Yes, actually they do. We climbed monitor ridge a few winters back and the two routes intersected about 500 feet below the crater rim. I like Monitor Ridge more if we are going to bivy, which we have done three times in past Februarys. I found that Monitor ridge requires more effort in the form of snowshoeing and snow camping vs. worm flows which is much faster if going in the winter. Worm Flows veers more to the climbers left the higher you go on the route and eventually puts you on Monitor Ridge proper, which you follow to the rim and summit. Thank You for your comment and happy trails.

Interesting video. How mountaineering clothes and gear differs from a hiker or backpacker? I would assume you have had base layer something like merino wool, and then for outer shell, some sort of Gore-Tex pants and jacket? Shoes… Winter waterproof boots, hiking boots or some sort of mountaineering shoes? Your video sparked an idea for me to try climbing Mt. St. Helens when it’s full of snow.

Yes, the late winter and early spring are the best times to climb St. Helens in my opinion. Faster travel on snow and ice vs. pumice, rock, and ash. I do wear all the clothes you mention above but some clothes are interchangeable. I have a base layer, then an outer shell. Since I warm up quickly, I keep insulating clothes and extras in my pack to save for the breaks, when my core will cool down. Good waterproof boots and crocks are a must as well as an ice axe and crampons. Glad to inspire and thanks for watching.

On outings like this I always pack a snow shovel, probe, and the ten essentials. I always take enough to spend the night if I have to incase of emergency. Also, I do like training for the future outings I will do. Best to get the kinks out early.
