March 27th, 1980. 52 days before the Mount St. Helens eruption
The first hole appears on the northwest face of the summit as seismic activity from the movement of magma deep in the mountain increases.
Aerial reconnaissance over Mount St. Helens shows the first signs of the impending eruption, an ash plume and vent appearing just off the summit. These first aerials of the mountain showing volcanic activity include descriptions of the event by crew in the helicopter.
At 1:51 into the video the top of the mountain can first be seen with the darkened area of ash stark against the white of the snow.
3:00 into the video a radio transmission from the helicopter can be heard with an altitude report.
At 5:00 the first sights of the initial crater being created by venting. Radio transmissions confirm the sighting.
At 7:56 a small landslide is witnessed within the crater.

These old raw videos are a treasure.
So this footage must've been from a little later in the day, after the initial eruption which occurred in the early afternoon. I know that Jess C Hagerman from Puyallup was dispatched by Weyerhaeuser to fly over the following day, the 28th.
I do remember hearing about this on March 27th 1980
Video in good quality for being 40 yrs old.
Today I learned that the mountain erupted *before* May 18. It first let out steam (erupted) on March 27. I grew up in the PNW. Ash fell on my house. Yet I didn't know until today that there were small eruptions before the big one. To me? The first eruption after 1000 years of nothing is more exciting than the May 18 one! It feels very weird, however, that I didn't know this. My life has been a lie!

relax , your life is not a lie, c'mon just because you did not know about these facts. You think if you don't know something your life is now over, are You google or something? You actually think You know everything? Thinking You know everything is the lie ,a wise man knows he knows nothing............. explain the theory of relativity while standing on your head speaking Russian, oh you don't know how??
