As an 11 year old Boy Scout in 1963 I spent a few days in Royal Basin, which was a pivotal experience in my life. I spent the ensuing decades roaming and climbing all over the world. Oddly enough I never went back to that area and so thanks for jogging my memory of what a lovely place it is..

We have something in common. When I was a Boy Scout in 1996, I did my first 50 mile backpacking trip in the Olympics. It was also a pivotal experience in my life. It was not until after college and athletics that I decided to start up backpacking again, all based on the fond memories from my scouting adventure in the Olympics. Glad this video brought back some great memories. Take care.

  • @aaronfulwider779

The bypass is narrow and the chimney that you down climb is a bit awkward and scary because if you fell backwards it would be bad. The ledges you follow after the chimney are also on the edge for sure. I have never done the finger traverse so I cannot compare. The bypass has enough exposure for one day.

If you think going up that Lake Constance trail in the daytime it tough, try going down it at night. When I and a friend climbed Mt. It definitely was a sweet outing. The sling was around a rock that was wedged as a cockscomb. It is near the top of the 2nd snow chute. It could be used but it was really tight standing in that narrow snow finger in the rock. It could be a place to clip the rope in as a point of protection before ascending further rather than a belay stance. (This just dawned on me while responding to you.). I also like the southeast which includes the Duckabush and Dosewallips Rivers, Anderson Pass, O'Niel Pass, Hart and Lacrosse lakes, First Divide, and the Skokomish River valley. DSV, I'm looking for some boot advice for summer trips of Baker and Shuksan. I'd rather not use my heavy and stiff ice climbing boots and want to go lighter. But how light is the question. Light and more comfortable with no insulation or heavier and stiffer with insulation. My feet tend to run a lil cold but the comfort of the La Sportiva Aequilibrium LT GTX is hard to ignore from my living room at least. thx

During the summer it is quite warm on the glaciers on those mountains. With boots I believe it is a very important choice because comfort is at stake. Light and more comfortable might be the best so long as they are water proof. You can always add insulation with your socks. Sarah went light and comfortable and loves it.

For me hiking in the dark was very HARD to a point that I thought the is something wrong with my heart but it was not. The moment the sunlight started to come out all that pressure on my chest went away. Was this only in my head or this hiking in the dark is not for me. Same thing it happened last year in August on Mt. Adams and I turned back at 9200 ft.

There is nothing in the world in that moment but you and that snow slope, everything else does not matter. Or just set out a little later. Break free of the trees as the sun is rising. As long as it is still cool, there is that safe window till noon to climbing safely on snow. Take care.
