Cliff was kind of New Wave around this time. "The young wear their freedom like cheap perfume". What a line.

Great line alright, but is it a bit sexist? I mean men don't wear perfume. Not being woke, just asking. Even if it is a bit sexist, still a great line!
@Knonnynonny
20 күн бұрын
@@user-fp7rc6sp5t Well, I'm a feminist and I don't presume to speak for others like me but I don't hear it that way. The persona speaking that line is not in a balanced state of mind. He is frustrated, disappointed, and venting. Perhaps he is worried for the ladies falling victims to the cheap ways in which they wear their PRECIOUS freedom, whatever he may think of as the correct way to wear it. So his political view could possibly be a bit sexist, or old fashioned, or not, and I am just assuming stuff ... and even if this bub does indeed feel that way, the fact that he is watching out for anyone's safety and not seeking to jeopardize it lets me breathe easy and relax that I can LIVE with it. The point of view of this chracter, this persona that is singing about this less than ideal situation, and not necessary Sir Cliff, known to be conservative in his views. Have a great day!!!
Released end December 1979, this captures the late 70's perfectly, and looks forward to the 80's as well. A perfect pop song, perfectly performed and produced.

One of Cliff's better songs. Has an eerie quality and suites the mood well.
From a songwriting perspective this is so impeccably well-crafted. The production, arrangement, instrumentation, unexpected chord shifts, great backing vocals....all just superb! Written by Terry Britten and B.A.Robertson, masters at this sort of thing....

One of Cliffs best
After 40 years this still works, fantastically haunting track
From the Golden Age of pop music!
I remember driving home & hearing Carrie on a local AM radio station. For weeks I listened to that same radio station hoping it would be played again. It seemed to disappear, no replays. Awesome song haunting emotional melody, cool groove & "Steely Dan" style chord changes on the chorus & great sax solo. I was really wanting to learn the song & add it to our bands set list. It was back in the day way before you could just pull it up online. 35 years later I found the mystery song on KZread. Thanks Cliff, It truly is one of my "desert island songs" !
Love the lyric "the young wear their freedom like cheap perfume" Terry Britten and B. A. Robertson are brilliant songwriters
Born in '75 and was brought up listening to this man's voice over the radio. I love him and his music. Will never be able to find a musician as talented as the ones I grew up listening to... "the young wear their freedom like cheap perfume" so apt for today. Strength to you, dear Sir Cliff Richard. Lots of love from warm South Africa!
I Can’t Believe there is Only 1 Million Plus Views on This, Cliff Is a Ledgend of Music & Always Will Be, I Grew up Listening to him & Still at 53 Yrs of Age Still Listening Now.

Masterpiece. A weird, brilliant song.
This song always haunts me. It's as though he realizes that Carrie is the one that he loves and he really needs to find her again. But she's gone. Not just gone but disappeared and nobody knows what happened to her. Now she'll always be one of his deep regrets with a question mark hanging over it.

The saddest part is good music and singers are so criminally under rated. THINK OF CLIFF! I have his albums which others may look down at but I DON'T CARE! I'll collect albums I enjoy, not what YOU enjoy, cool people! And Cliff WAS the best of that time. What a voice! Amazing craftmanship!
The right sentiment, universal appeal, this song should be played more often on 80's retro, smooth jazz, 'the vault'-like format stations.
What a great song. Does anyone else miss the bad ass saxophone lead breaks that were so prevalent in the 80’s? Horns accompaniment were just magic. Now we have autotuned shit and digital “likenesses”. So sad.
This is a truly iconic song, sung by an iconic singer. My favorite singer..
I BELIEVE THAT THERE HAVE BEEN ONLY TWO ARTISTS WITH NUMBER ONE HITS IN EACH OF - REPEAT EACH - FOUR STRAIGHT DECADES. CLIFF RICHARD WAS ONE OF THOSE GREAT ARTISTS. Many artists endured but not with number ones!
Cliff's best song in my opinion :)
Love cliff from the time when the best music in the world was being created 60s 70s 80s
Perfect pop song. Production and playing is top notch. Some of the harmonisation reminds of Steely Dan's jazzy sophistication, whilst retaining a bit of rock edge. Written by Terry Britten and BA Robertson. Terry played guitar in Cliff's band through the 70's, co-wrote Devil Woman, and went on to more success with Tina Turner, co-writing and producing What's Love Got to Do With It amongst others. A real perfectionist in the studio, and with a superb pop singing voice of his own, too.
He is amazing, so brilliant, isn’t he? Cliff can handle any song.

Not really, it's 1979. It's close to 1980.
What an amazing voice. His vocal delivery is unbeatable. He sure knows how to get the best out of a song, and such a great record. A joy to listen to.
Hubo una epoca en que cualquier cancion que sonaba en la radio era sublime, melodiosa, bien compuesta e instrumentada y con un gran juego de armonías.
Sometimes I wish I was born 45 years earlier so that I could be in Denmark when he would come and do concerts. He's my absolute favorite singer!
I believe that this is an amazingly creative well crafted song. Terribly overlooked by the "cool" people who have overlooked many others...
The cool about this song is how urban and jazzy on the style of Steely Dan it is . Pure New York City nights on early 80’s . Love it!

His best ever song by far, great melody, atmospheric, excellent lyrics, and a great song. If this was a metal song it would be superb.
Mr evergreen, there was a time I was a big early 70's Slade fan, still am. But never took much notice of singers like this guy, But how wrong can we be, This guy is not only a rock n roll legend, he's an absolute English treasure , although he may have been born in India, England is his adopted home, brought up in a cheshunt council house to become a world class entertainer with enough money to buy some real estate in all the places he loves, You cannot knock this guy, He is a true gent, with a heart of gold, with so much charity work, and good causes close to his heart. He's the nearest thing to perfection. God bless this Human being for being a wonderful example to humanity.
Pure Steely Dan/Royal Scam vibes on the chorus. Definitely one of his best songs, and the production is very nice too

I've only heard this song , perhaps, five times including now. First heard it on Casey Kasem's top 40 radio show in winter 1980 and immediately thought of Sissy Spacek. Eerie, unsettling lyrics-----whatever happened to the young lady Mr. Richard is singing about ?? The melody is melancholy and foreboding, as well.

The spookiness made me think of the Stephen King story too...same sense of creeping dread. What happened to the Carrie in the song seems to be summed up in the backing vocals near the end of the song..."Carrie doesn't live...doesn't live...doesn't live...anymore"...
Top of the Pops on BBC Four brought me here. So pleasantly amazed at this. Brilliant lyrics that tell a story with a haunting melody to go with it. Almost up to 1 million hits as well!!.
Very nice bass work! Bass line during chorus at 0:57-1:02 (and elsewhere) is harmonically rich.

Superb ! from Sir Cliff 💏Just Love This 💕✨💝😎💓
Since the summer of 1982 when I first heard this song, I've thought of it as concentrated elixir. But since then, I've become aware of a tough subject involving the trafficking and sale of human beings. For Carrie to just go off into the night and disappear, as she seems to have according to the song, now brings to my mind something more sinister about the present-day world than the one I used to know, when I had my first kiss one hot summer night after first hearing "Carrie," and having the song blast into my head. Unforgettable! Thank you for memories caused by a combination of hot summer night, visit to an Observatory and truck-stop, and long smooch by two people inside an idling Honda Civic, Mr. Richard. They're memories special to me, but perhaps frightening ones for a hypothetical, impressionable and vulnerable young person, who may have narrowly escaped being kidnapped. I hope you got home safely, Carrie! ❤-Renee K. Taylor, Kamloops, BC, Canada/T'kemlups Te Secwepemc Unceded Territory, BC, Kanata (Feb. 28/24.)

Brilliant song! I think Cliff did a great job with the vocals. The acting in this vid makes me laugh - the "telephone" voices: "It's useless information...just a helpless situation..." and the two fingers scrolled across the neck to represent "cheap perfume", not to mention the jacket twiddling - hilarious!
