Thank you for the reminder - As a woman of faith: I need to be a good steward of my home! I have fallen off and will get back on track for 2024 (i.e., getting back to my cleaning regimen). I honestly had to address the deeper psychology reasons; for me it was anger and resentment which I will not go into here but thank you for your transparency which provided a confirmation for me returning to making myself a priority and taking care of my apartment (co-op) in NY (which I own) and a peaceful home environment! Again thank you. I will get my place in order! Grace and peace to you! I am determined!

Apartment dweller here. Been renting for the last 21 years. Currently in a 1bed 1bath 700 sq ft with a garage (good thing cause the apartment has literally no storage space at all. Rented a 1400 sq ft house with my ex last year and could not keep up with keeping it clean. Don’t know how people do it. I’d like to buy a small condo or small townhouse at some point if the prices ever go down again. However, I do love the freedom of apartment living, just call maintenance to fix something, no yard to maintain, no snow shoveling, someone else maintains the pool and workout room…I’m definitely the “pay for convenience“ type of person.

Almost 2 years ago I’m sold my 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom home (kids are grown and I’m divorced) and downsized to my 17 foot RV trailer. I’m on my parents property and I’m there to help my mom care for my dad (he has Parkinson’s with lewy body dementia) and help take care of their place. I downsized a lot and kept enough stuff to furnish a small apartment if I decided I needed something bigger. My stuff is stored in one of my dads garages, but it’s not much at all! I love my minimal lifestyle and it’s allowing me to be there for my family.

My problem on top of medical matters is cleaning up. Logical I know it would be easier to do it right now after using the kitchen (m y battlefield, I hate cooking and the after cooking desaster 😢). One job at a time, whether its the dishes or clearing a cupboard at a time. Your videos have really helped motivate me to finally sort this mess out. Just put "it" away or where it belongs.. and do dishes after each meal, and you're good to go! Having said that, everyone deserves a staycation and just decompress. owning a house is so stupid expensive. The mortgage and insurance is the cheap part, the expense comes when the washer fails and the kitchen rains, or when the storm took out the fence, the roof and the furnace died all at the same time. And both hubby and the teen are on board, so we work as a team, and have very VERY few things compared to the average. I started with the fly lady system and went from there. I am such a hard ass that my teen makes her bed every morning and tells her friends that they cannot be sleeping well at night with their rooms the way they are. It is simple things like doing the dishes after every meal, a load of laundry every other day, and general tidy before bed every night. It does not take long. The trick is doing it even when ones is tired.

Thank you for being so real in your journey. You are so much more relatable than 99% of the other youtubers showing their "messy" homes. We live in a 4 bed/ 3 bath home. There are 3 adults and it is hard to maintain. The bonus room is borderline hoarder as well as half the garage and the office. I keep freezing when attempting these rooms; so I have finally started to just do little bits at a time working on each. It's not a radical transformation; but I am making progress and I am trying to be ok with that. Fortunately it is somewhat easier for me as when I do clean; I toss/donate almost everything with little hesitation. I bought large construction trash bags to have on hand ready to be filled as well as empty boxes so they are ready and waiting when I am motivated. That is where I am at. For your meal prep; since you are limited with your freezer space you might try planning meals that use the same ingredients and prepping those ahead of time. If I have my veggies already chopped, even that is significant and makes it easier. Or try using the same protein for 3 meals to combine your prep work. Spaghetti w/ meatballs one night, meatball parmesan hoagies the 2nd night then Swedish meatballs the 3rd night. Your sister's journey has also been a great help and I thank you both! Best of luck on your goals!

One thing that I discovered about myself is that I had or have a skewed sense of time, I would always tell myself “ I’m too busy, I don’t have time to do that right now” I had my mind blown, like my head spun around… or it felt like it, when I read something in one of my decluttering books.. it was merely this .. the author pointed out.. “it only takes 90 seconds to make one’s bed” . Talk about life changing! Spun my head around.. basically got an attitude adjustment . It’s amazing and applying the concept to the rest of my home has made all the difference . ❤

Hi Carla 🤗 Lovely to watch another real and relatable video from you 💗 I live in alone in a one bathroom, one bedroom rental house that’s about 764 square feet, located in a small village in the Netherlands. It also has a small front and back garden with a little shed. Officially it’s a senior home, so most people sleep in the bedroom that’s one the first floor. But the house does have a big attic with low vaulted ceilings, divided into two spaces. I sleep in the big one and store things in the smaller one. This way, the official bedroom can be used for many things, among others for guests and drying my laundry. I have been decluttering for years and i am passionate about it because every time i let things go i learn something new about myself and i feel more liberated. I can feel it in my body when something in my house feels right or it feels off. But it is a process and the hardest part for me is regular and sentimental paper, so i am trying to reduce that more and more, because it feels so chaotic and heavy. I could talk for hours about this but I won’t haha. This already is a long post 😅 Thank you for sharing!! Love, Nora

However, I’ve closed off everything mostly because I don’t own enough furniture (nor do I want to) to fill all the rooms. I keep my bedroom and a sewing room and that pretty much makes me happy. I’m moving out of state to a small farmhouse this summer and I’ll be happy there too. Thank you for sharing your lifestyle with all of us. Two adults and four dogs in a three bedroom/three bath house, but I spent a decade living in an old 700 sf apartment in OC with my son, a cat, and eventually a dog. I still lovingly refer to the apartment as ‘the hovel’. We were happy there, but it is kinda tough in a tiny space with an active kid and all the toys everywhere. Friday night after work was my mandatory cleaning night. I wanted to be able to wake up on Saturday morning to a clean home. Many years after we moved away, I was in the neighborhood and stopped by and knocked on the door. I had a nice convo with the lady living there, also with a young son.

Her room is now a spare 1/2 bedroom for my grand daughter when she comes to stay and half workout equipment. The 3rd room was/is my husband's office. It's soooo bad in there. I keep the door shut. The other one is rarely used, so still only cleaning 1 bedroom, kitchen/dining combo, living room, and 2 bathrooms. I occasionally dust and vaccumn spare bedroom. Minimalism makes it so easy, though. I just don't own enough for it to get too bad. But I will say I sometimes wish I rented so I could move easier. Lol. I like change. I moved every summer as a kid. From TX to AZ back and forth. I miss the newness of it all. I have way too much stability. Hahaha.

Amazing how little bites here and there can keep me on top of things. Two bedroom, 2 1/2 bath town house - my 7th house but if I ever move again it will be into an apartment. I've enjoyed buying, fixing up, and selling my homes, but at 72, and with medical issues, I'd prefer to have all the major maintenance and upkeep taken care of by someone else! Good job on the clean-up! Just do it!!

I bought a house in 2023 and moved across country from Kentucky to Washington in a Subaru with 10 cats and my son driving a U-Haul. It's 3 bedrooms, 1 bath, with a very odd L-shaped living/dining space. She was built in 1905 so she's a creaky lady but I love her. Biggest struggle I have is litterboxes. It's a daily task -- or many times a day task. Also been trial and error in finding boxes the cats will use. I think I have the right number and size. When those are on schedule and the cats are happy, my days run much more smoothly. I work from home so I'm always here but still have 8 hours plus of my day dedicated to someone else's time. I did own a home in Kentucky that was about the same size but I find this house is much easier to keep clean. I'm not sure why since it's the same size, same number of cats, same me. But I can sweep/vacuum in far less time than before. Before I moved I got rid of probably 60 percent of my belongings. Everything save the cats fit in a small U-Haul truck. I've since started acquiring stuff again and I need to get a handle on that. As an aside, I've been working on getting a diagnose for ADHD. Some of the purchases seem to fall under impulse buying for the dopamine rush. I'm trying to become more intentional with that. I also rotted for a few days -- week -- in January. I noticed one day I had no clean coffee mugs and couldn't wash them because was tossing trash in the sink rather than taking a few steps to put it in the trash because the trash had a box sitting on it and I was too lazy to take it out for recycling. I decided I had rotted enough and got that under control. I've started with Factor for meals. I love love love the food but I've had to chase down the delivery from them for my first two boxes so I'm slightly annoyed with them. I'm hoping it's a temporary issue and meals show up on time in the future. Like I said, I love the food.

@@pixiethistle TL:DR Really TL. :) But, you know, cats and cat moms. :) My son and I agreed it was the best four and a half days we've had in a long time. Not sure how the cats feel about the trip. They had Benadryl the morning of the drive. It had limited success. The cats were still kind of freaked out but a few calmed down enough not to rend flesh. They were all remarkably quiet overall. They were all in individual wire crates with plastic tray bottoms, based on size, no litter pans. They also ended up stacked on top of each other in the back of the car. The ones who had the calmest demeanor were on the top and those who panicked were on the lower level. One little bob-tail calico spent the entire time with her carrier wedged behind the front seat covered with towel. She did really well. They all ate, drank and did their business. I ran out of towels for cages -- not the best idea -- on day two and started with puppy pads, which I should have used to start. I also bought hand towels at the hotels we stayed at for them to sleep on. One place even gave me a bag of cleaning rags for free. Luckily no one had any intestinal issues, human or feline. One of the cats is diabetic and got insulin twice a day. I based when we stopped for food and rest by what he wanted. He sat passenger to the right and would reach out and tap my shoulder with a claw or two -- or just start meowing -- and we'd find a rest stop, give him food and water and offer that to the rest. Most didn't eat for a day or so but by the end they were all looking forward to their food. When we stopped, we'd set some crates on the ground for those who ended up liking to be outside the car. We switching crates for a few who were getting a little nuts from being in too small of a crate and stuck in the middle. I covered the entire top of the crates with a big sheet to avoid motion sickness while driving. I think that made a big difference. Some got Benadryl during the trip. My son and I took turns sleeping in the car with them so they weren't alone, and two in particular would get restless. I tried not to rely on the Benadryl but made sure they were fed, clean and comfortable and not too hot or cold. I tried singing to them, but that only made things worse :) They were less stressed when my son was in the car since they weren't his cats and they didn't think of him as their human. When I was there they all wanted my attention. It all worked out really well. For regular vet visits, mine all do really well. I tend to leave the carriers out -- the regular plastic kind, not the crates -- so they're not associated with 'vet visits'. They're just in the corner of the room where the little boxes are. I think cats associate items with vet visits and that can start a cascade of panic. I've also taken those who like car rides just on drives around the block so they don't associate car rides with something bad. I also tell them where they're going and why before we go, while I'm getting them ready and on the way. No idea if that helps but I don't think it hurts. But of all the 20 plus cats I've had over my life, there are only two that were almost impossible to deal with. One I have now is like that. The other passed on several years ago, who was diabetic. I have three of her kids, the diabetic boy and his now diabetic sister plus one who seems not have inherited diabetes. The mom's name was Poppy and I called her the chainsaw cat. I ended up in the ER once after trying to get her to the vet. She was a Kentucky-born wildcat for sure. :)

I have a 3 bed, 2.5 bath house in Scotland. The cleaning is endless but you inspire me to reduce the clutter. It does help with cleaning when things have a place. I'm slowly working on it, your channel encourages me.

I am a married senior living in a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom manufactured home on the Washington Coast. My house gets out of control at times but as I have decluttered for the past 2 years, it doesn't take long to get everything back in order. Keep up the good work Carla.

I own a three bed, two bath home on 5 acres in Oklahoma. We have two kids, two horses, a dog and a cat. Simplifying our things has been key to managing everything. And a motivator for me to get donations to the donation center is to reward myself with a coffee, soda, or ice cream cone after I leave the donation center. Hard work deserves a treat! 🩷

Happy New Year Carla! Love your inspirational videos. I've found the smaller place you have, the less time it takes to clean it. The less space you have to accumulate stuff helps keep the clutter to a minimum. Before buying anything I always ask myself if I have room for it and what will it be replacing? When something new comes in, something else gets donated. Meal prep on Sunday helps me hugely during the week. I make healthy homemade soup and freeze it in one portion containers so I don't have to worry about it going bad if I don't eat it within a few days if just in the fridge. I also make protein smoothies and store them in the fridge in small mason jars for the work week. I prep stuff for chefs salad and keep the ingredients separate until I'm ready to sit down and eat it so the salad and toppings stay fresh, crisp, etc. I also make yogurt parfaits in advance with plain greek yogurt, frozen berries, sliced almonds, chia, flax and hemp seeds. I also eat one apple a day. This routine helps me eat healthy without cooking and creating a lot of dishes. I highly recommend making sure your next place has a dishwasher. I run mine twice a week and having it helps to keep the kitchen cleaner for longer. I'm a solo dweller, just me and my cat. I have a 2 br 2 ba condo and I can't wait to sell it soon and downsize into a one bedroom. I always thought I needed a second bedroom for guests, but it just ends up being a store room for clutter, so I'm moving away from that trap ! Have a fabulous 2024 !

Hello from Canada! I live in a 1 bed 1 bath apartment. I apply the "if the task takes less than a minute do it right away" rule and it saves my life every day. Have a good day and big kiss to Samson 😊😊

Hi Carla and Samson. We live in a 4 bed 5 bathroom house ( 3 stories ) It's definitely a struggle to have the whole house cleaned at once. It's two of us and our dog. My husband works from home so it's nice to have extra space, although we don't really use our dining room and a spare room, we do use most of the rest of the house daily though. This year I'll be doing another once over to find more things to declutter.

We live in a 3 bedroom single family house with a finished basement. It's not easy. Your channel is definitely helpful in reminding me it's a process and working through my perfectionism. Thank you

I have a 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath FL house. It's my first home after apartment living my entire life and I had to buy my ex out of his half of the equity when we divorced but it was so worth it because now it's completely mine and I love it. Decluttering and having designated spaces and systems helps a lot. I also cook at home 90% of the time and do food prep, it's really easy to oven bake a bunch of chicken so it is ready to go, veggies, fruits, and salads (save the dressing on the side so they stay fresh longer). But be careful with buying a home, I feel like stuff/clutter expands to the space alotted often. Thrifting and decorating has been my favorite part of ownership, but the maintenance costs have not been (new roof, fence, flooring, vanities, appliances, paint, AC unit, water repipe, etc). Can't wait to see your new digs!

Yay!! So glad to see a new video from you! I hope you had a good new year and staycation. My spouse and I and my youngest daughter who still lives at home rent and we live in a duplex. We have 3 bedrooms and 1 and a half baths and a basement (very common in the Midwest). Basement is not finished but is used for off season storage when needed. I am a minimalist but my spouse and daughter are NOT so it’s always a juggling act 😂 I work full time M-F and do my best to do meal prep on Saturday or Sunday, even if it is just making u huge container of salad and washing and cutting up produce. My favorite thing to do is make a huge pot of soup on the weekend for our lunches or I make a huge pan of sheet pan fajitas and use leftovers for tacos or homemade burrito bowls throughout the week.
