Cleaning the Original Game Boy's Battery Terminals to Remove Corrosion (And Fix Your Gameboy!)
For this guide, I'll show you how to clean your Game Boy's battery terminals, removing corrosion, and hopefully restoring your Game Boy to a working order. In my case, it got my Game Boy working again.

Thank you! I have just found my original 1989 Game Boy console, but even though there had been no batteries left in it, I couldn't get it to switch on. I followed your step by step instructions, cleaned all the contacts, removed a load of dust and crud, reassembled it, put in the new batteries, held my breath and turned it on. One perfectly functional Game Boy!
3:25 Finally! Someone who shows how to remove the battery contacts that are on the cover! THANK YOU!

Thank you for creating this video. I am a CS teacher and a student asked me to fix their Gameboy. I had no knowledge but gave it a try and now it works! You are amazing! Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Got this "vintage" mom able to fix her old Game Boy due to crazy battery corrosion. Was pretty fun to learn something new. Very great tutorial! Wanted to sip a glass of Whisky with you, but it was 8 am so I settled for coffee!
Thank you so much. My gameboy was struggling, I cleaned the contacts and it's working like a charm 🎉
Very straightforward tutorial with a clear camera and steps. Thanks!
Thank you 😊 I have just watched your video about 30mins ago and now my gameboy color is working again.
Thank you for this! Just installed a cleanjuice mod with the help of this video. All the others speed the disassembly and assembly process up by like 40x but I'm a hardware noob and needed to see all the steps.
Thanks for the video, I was only able to turn on my gameboy via the power supply, but this method cleaned the corrosion on the battery terminals so easily!
I fixed my old 29 year old gameboy with this tutorial! Wooooo thank you so much!

Thank you for this! I actually ended up using this video as a guide to remove and clean the battery terminals from my gameboy printer.

This is the most straight forward guide I could find i havent checked you channel yet so i just wanted to ask. I recently found my moms old gameboy, its heavily yellowed, the screen is a little scratched it has some dirt on it and battery corrosion. What process work I go about removing and fixing it or is it to far gone 8:00 finnaly someone who shows how to put the ribbon back on
thanks for helping out! I am going to use heat to retrobrite my second gameboy which i just got at an estate sale and i didnt want metal in it and this really helped!
Thank you so much man it was awesome to play the game boy again

Great thanks for this! It really saved my life... or at least my Game Boy (which I've had since I was 12), and it went really fast to fix it all as well!
Thanks for this! Mine just had corrosion on the bottom ones so I didn’t take it apart, I just painted some vinegar on them with a q-tip and it worked! Amazing!

Woot! Glad I could help :)
I've always loved using baking soda and water to clean off the corrosion on battery terminals. It is super fast and with a little rinse and maybe some light brushing they are cleaner than ever!
Thank you!! My DMG was revived! I used CLR and it BURSTED BUBBLES hahaha it was quite satisfiying. One of the terminals was so full of corrosion that the rust is embedded. I might have to replace it someday. Thank you 😊
Thanks for the video! Got my dad's gameboy to work again
What great video followed all the way fixed my gameboys thanks
@Howchoo Great video, thx! Do you know where I can buy replacement battery terminals? The little tab that snaps in place was too corroded, and it snapped off (my error). Now it won't turn on at all.
Hey ! i am currently fixing and cleaning a gameboy. There was pen and ink marks all over it but some are so hard to remove ! would retro brighting it remove the tough stains ?
Hi just asking how did you clean the corrosion on the springs attached to the motherboard?
Nice tutorial, thx! :)
Thx man you saved my gameboy!
I had a amazing find today of a original yellow Gameboy (still had Pokemon Gold in the cartridge slot). It's not working, I thought it might be because of the battery contacts as there was some obvious corrosion. They are clean and shiny now but it still doesn't work. Do you have a video troubleshooting possible problems as I would love to get this gem up and running again.
Unintentional ASMR 👌 But of course also a great and helpful video.

I transferred the problem to my gameboy color with the same issue. It's even easier because there's no cable between the shells 👌
I did this process, but when I turn the Gameboy on the red light lights up but neither tetris or pacman starts. I will take it apart again and give a more thorough look at it. I'll take out those other posts now that I now how to remove them. I'll also check if the cartridge actually fits properly.
The bottom contacts were to far gone. Could be bent with 2 fingers. I could get more but planning to move the mother board to a whole new case for a restoration and new everything save for the PCB.
I hope I can open it as well...Those Y Screws piss me off when I ever run into them. Like 5 leg screws.
Would have liked it if you'd done the ribbon cable reconnect part on camera because I found that particularly difficult on mine but good overall video 👍
@LucasKelleher
2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, reconnecting the ribbon cable is the most difficult part of this process BY FAR!
thank you for this!
Is there a way to do it with out opening the gameboy?
How do I remove the contacts without taking gameboy apart? Mine only has one of the bottom contacts corroded and I’d rather not open the case
Thank you!
My gameboy color has a battery terminal spring that's bent into the circuit board and it's soldered! What should I do?
@Howchoo

You can attempt to (carefully) unbend it using needle-nose pliers. If you have a soldering iron, you can desolder the terminal, unbend or replace it, and then solder it back on. I hope that's helpful!
If you find corrosion in a battery-needed electronic game, is the game broken because I found some in Battleship Deluxe and it keeps on repeating the same words. Can this be fixed?
@Howchoo
5 жыл бұрын
Corrosion doesn't always mean the electronics are ruined -- it depends on the type of electrical components covered in the material and how long it was there. I would clean the corrosion off as well as you can and go from there.
The third cup killed me 😂
I had the same power problem. Battery contacts were bad. I cleaned them up and put batteries in. It works now, but when I put the batteries in the red battery light is on even though the on/off switch is in the off position. When I turn it on of course the game starts but when I turn it off the battery light is still on. It only turns off when I take the batteries out. I don't remember that being on all the time. Any ideas?
@Howchoo

Yep, what’s likely happened is the corrosion has reached the board and has closed the loop, so to speak, so it always thinks the power switch is on. Open it up and clean the board thoroughly using the same method as the contacts and you should be good to go!

Did you ever fix the problem?
White Vinegar + Q-TIPS + Normal Toothbrush + Fine Brass Brush not necessarily but could help+ Ipa Alcohol + Wiping all Dry with Q-Tips than Applying Dielectric Silicone Grease. 🖖
Don't hesitate to do it even when the gameboy is working fine. I had one who worked fine but would have some problems to work from time to time. The exposed part seemed okay but when I removed them to clean them, corrosion was present on the hidden side. It never hurt to clean them, it can only make your gameboy work better. Used white vinegar for three gameboy and now all them are working fine again (except for one where I had to replace one connector of the battery because the old one had so much corrosion that he broke in two when I removed it xD). Only difference was mine were not really in a nice shape so I left them one hour in the white vinegar.

OMG. I did this and almost fell out of my chair when my 30yr old Game Boy started working again. wooooohooooooo

The one I have had a small leakage once but surprisingly there's no corrosion. Also thank you, that video will come in handy if the one I have develops that issue. Also, does the phone number on the sticker that's on the battery cover still work today?

4:38 What percentage is that white distilled vinegar? What percentage is the rubbing alcohol?
@Howchoo
4 жыл бұрын
I can’t recall since I did this video so long ago, but it shouldn’t really matter for either. Higher % IPA will result in less water which is good, so try and find some 91% if you can. If not, the normal 67% will work too. :)
@KYBlueJedi
4 жыл бұрын
@@Howchoo Thanks. MetalJesusRocks mentioned 91% or higher. There is even some 99% rubbing alcohol that evaporates quickly.Insane.
Okay, but what happens if I doused everything in white vinegar and scrubbed vigorously before you said “CAREFULLY…” 😅
A friend told me the batteries of his GameBoy had a leak and its not working even since.. He s giving it out for $20. I havent seen the damage but you think it will be possible for me to clean/fix it??
@Howchoo
4 жыл бұрын
I’d give it a shot! Btw; $20 for a non-working Game Boy is a great price even if you can’t fix it ;) Because you can combine the parts with another non-working one. But chances are you can fix it, and at the very least you’ll have a fun project on your hands.

Hello, I have a Nintendo and a batterie has corroded a spring it works when I pull the battery back. Do I need to just replace the spring or the whole single component and how do I do this from the outside ? Thanks
@Howchoo
4 жыл бұрын
You can replace just the spring, or remove it and soak it to scrub off the corrosion. Just remove the back case and push a small flathead screwdriver in to remove the springs. You’ll see how they’re “clipped” in there once you get the back off. Just be careful not to rip the ribbon cable when you remove it. It’s an easier process than you might think :)

If my game boy is yellow, any way to brighten it?
@Howchoo

That’s actually caused by the Bromine they added to plastics as a flame-retardant, when exposed to sunlight - you can whiten it using a process called Retrobrighting. I’m planning a video on this eventually but for now, this should help you: www.instructables.com/id/Retr0bright-how-to-turn-a-yellow-Gameboy-white-aga/
