As someone who’s old enough to be your mother, I feel the need to add a little wisdom and experience from thirty years as a professional cleaner. #1: the wait time for the chemical to do it’s job is called “dwell” time #2: if something doesn’t need chemical dwell time, like glass framed art prints, always spray the cloth, never the glass because the liquid can seep behind and ruin the print. #3: if anyone still has (single sheet)rolled vinyl flooring in their bathroom, entry or kitchen, then the steam mop is PERFECT, because there are no seams. Back in the day, Linoleum and Congoleum were high quality flooring and lasted forever,so some homes may still have them in good condition. #4: a real ostrich feather duster actually works pretty well, you just have to shake them outside. However.the duster that you showed at 3:24,is called an electrostatic duster. If they get really dingy, you can wash them under running water and hang dry,but on a regular basis, you run the hose of your vacuum up and down the fluffy stuff before you dust and it charges it with static electricity. You can actually see the dust jump on to it and hold onto it! Very effective and reusable!

Respectfully, I have tried to use microfiber for dusting for the past 9+ years, and it absolutely *does* push dust around and leave dust behind. Recently I got tired of being dissatisfied with microfiber’s dusting performance and went *back* to those fluffy swiffer dusters. They work much much better for me. One thing I would like to add is that if you are cleaning a home with dogs and/or cats-vacuum once before your top to bottom clean and then at the end as usual. This really helps with the pet hair that seems to magically reappear after dusting. I also vacuum bathrooms before and after I clean them to pick up the hair that seems to reappear when you are finished.

From Fly Lady: The reason that an ostrich feather duster works is because there are no oils in the feathers. The fine feathers grab the dust and hang onto it. You just brush the feathers back and forth; there is no right or wrong way to use it. When you are finished, you take the duster outside and shake it briskly to get rid of the dust ("Bless the World!") Wash with soap and water from time to time.

OMG - your comment about cluttered homes have the most cleaning supplies was so spot on! I have been recently helping my friend finish cleaning out her family home after her mother passed away last year. Now it was a smaller TOWNHOUSE and the amount of mops-vaccums-dusters was insane! Not to mention we sorted and gave away bags of cleaning supplies to about a dozen people. I think I have enough brand new products from them to last me the next 3 years! And we threw out about the same amount we gave away. and yet, everything was covered in dust or needed a serious wipe down. I dumped out the cat's litter box and poured in the bleach, never thinking that a cat's urine has ammonia. With my next breath, I realized what had happened and I grabbed my dog and ran out onto the patio. Luckily, it all turned out okay. But something to be aware of.

@Jyl Romain I learned from Jackson Galaxy that cat litter boxes should not be cleaned with chemicals (so not bleach) and even those that claim to be more “natural” because at the end of the day, it will be harmful to the kitty and it will also cause the kitty to want to avoid the litter box because his/her scent is gone. He calls them “scents soakers” those make them feel safe. So he was saying a good rinsing with hot water and soap is the most you can do to clean them and it’s worked for me. I think the kind of litter you use also makes a huge difference on how the pee can get stuck to the bottom of the box or not. Oh and some litters can make kitties sneeze/have allergies. I didn’t know this until I got a new kitty who was showing allergy symptoms after a couple of days of being in our home. After all the vet testing and what not, we realized it was the litter.

Swiffer duster is a preference, not a "mistake" - to me the product I actually use is the one I'm going with. I don't have the wand, but I have a handheld and the dusters and it works for me. Yes, cloths are more eco friendly, but I'd rather have my home clean than do it perfectly! (Same for paper towels for certain cleaning jobs). Microfibers also create pollution because of the tiny fibres that can't be filtered out in water treatment.

I thought it was a gimmick. We actually used Murphy’s Oil in a bucket and wiped each surface at our cleaning jobs. (We also used a feather duster.🙁) The houses looked good when we left but got dusty rather quickly. Then we broke down and tried the Swiffer dusters. Amazing! It seems like dirt dust doesn’t land back on it nearly as quickly. We don’t have a lot of money. In fact, we are probably considered poor. (Wages are low in Florida.) But we consider the cost of Swiffers well worth it. So please don’t feel bad that you have recommended them in the past.

Yes, they are reusable, but they are harmful to the environment to make, & they don’t break down the way a natural fiber does (like paper or cotton.) I have never owned a dishwasher but my mum taught me a trick with dishes. Most of us nowadays do not rush into the kitchen after every meal to wash the dishes, so food is often WELDED to the plates by the time we get to them. Do this. Fill the sink/bowl with hot, soapy water and leave the dishes to soak for ten to fifteen minutes before breaking out the dishcloth. The soap and hot water breaks down all the yukky food stuff and it's then just a matter of swishing it off with the cloth.

I loathe electrostatic dusters. If the dust can be shaken off, what do you think happens when you’re moving it around from one shelf or piece of furniture to the next? Use one in a brightly lit room or where the sunshine is coming through and you’ll see all that dust swirling around. Swiffers are the best for places that don’t need much dusting. I usually use one for light dusting and then save it. Next time I use the same one for heavy dusting and get a fresh one for the light dusting. Yes, the extendable wand is flimsy and intended to break. Someone should come up with a better extendable wand. I’d buy it.

The makeshift duster for ceilings or flat surfaces with any long device are great. But really need the Swiffer duster (not a cheaper version) for dusting items-frames, knick knacks, chandeliers, books, etc, using the dust attracting technology of Swiffer without knocking over the said items. Of course if you shake the duster there will be some fallout-the solution to that is DON’T SHAKE IT. The rule to maximize the Swiffer is to go from clean to dirty. So I will use it last on the dirtiest/dustiest something like top of tall furniture or along baseboards, under the edge of furnitures.

I have a swifter handle that I made “ homemade swiffer heads. I use them then toss them into the wash when needed. I like to clean with Murphy Wood oil soap. It can clean many surfaces. I also like Dawn and water to wipe down counters. If the ants come, I use vinegar in a spray bottle to clean. Most furniture today says not to use cleaners only a damp cloth to wipe down. It’s usually finished with Polyacrylic, that’s why it feels plastic. Grandmas old wood furniture gets proper cleaning with product for wood, old English for us. Sometimes my microfiber cloths leave little bits of dust pieces. If it’s wet, I’m just making more of a mess than cleaning. Does that mean I need to retire this one and try a new one? For paper towels and napkins, unless I’m cleaning up a broken egg on the floor, I have made cloth napkins for every day use rolled and in a little basket on the table. Just use up your material and have fun with it. Now my husband, that’s another story , he loves to kill a tree with his paper towel use.

I use 1 Swiffer duster a week or every other week, and buy it in a 24 pack at Sam's. Micro fiber puts micro plastic in the water, and then in our bodies. Microfiber gets 100% full of dust way too quick (way less surface area than the fringes of the Swiffer) and can't handle the delicate swoosh over delicate ornaments or intricate details of ornate furniture. I swish as I walk by, and it takes like 10-15 minutes to Swiffer the WHOLE house, ceiling lights to baseboards, doors to decor. Finally, I dust the bathroom floor, well, I really use the full Swiffer to sweep up all the hair, on the bathroom floor, and I dust the toilet, then TOSS IT. I am NEVER going to waste a load of laundry on a single sanitation cycle for 1 nasty toilet dusting microfiber. Personally, with cat hair and my own hair, I like to dust away this debris from the base and lid-hinge area, BEFORE I use my disposable Clorox wipe (ONLY for the toilet, 1-2 containers a year), so my Clorox sanitizes, and doesn't get wasted wiping up debris. I am a 💯 tree hugger... Up until the point that I have to consider my own sanitization, or when I start calculating whether it's better for the environment to use 1 disposable wipe, or waste a load of laundry water with soap and micro plastic, or the cost of discretionarily used disposables versus investing in high quality reusables... I give up the stress and self judgement, and go with the easiest option. Maybe if I had more reasons to run a sanitization wash cycle, I would feel otherwise, I just wanted to suggest a way that the disposables could be used in an environmentally thoughtful way... I DO use reusable napkins and repurpose old clothes as cleaning rags (like window washing, wiping spills, etc)... I ONLY go disposable when the germiest germs are involved 🤷‍♀️ Thank you for coming to my Ted talk. 🥰 Do what works for you! Other than the mixing of chemicals, none of these are really objectively "WRONG"....

I’ve always cleaned from the top down. It’s how I was taught. And yes, I still use furniture polish on my real wood pieces having a high shine. You have to buff out the polish or yes, it will be splotchy and leave finger prints. It’s not a part of the weekly cleaning, only every couple of months. Otherwise I use my swiffer duster. I do use Norwex microfiber cloths to clean my windows and other cleaning chores. I do use paper towels, because let’s be honest, who wants to clean up puppy messes with expensive microfiber cloths? Or any cloth, unless it’s going in the trash afterwards. 😂. I do have cleaning products though as I’m not 100% convinced that something can be sanitized with water and a rag 😂. I don’t have as many types of cleaning products as I used to, because I mainly use some type of surface cleaner now, but I never use bleach unless it’s in my toilet bowl cleaner product. While your perspective and opinion is great for a minimalistic viewpoint, it just doesn’t entirely fit into mine. But it’s all good as we each have our own method of what works for us. Thanks for sharing your opinions and alternative options on cleaning tools and supplies 😊. I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos and reading your posts and am thinking hard about joining your upcoming day long declutter.

As a nurse of nearly 30 years, one thing I've learned is that a 1:10 solution of bleach to water will kill just about any type of bacteria. I've used it to clean contaminated hospital equipment. Bleach is the recommended cleaner for C. diff. My other comment is regarding the use of furniture polish. I have found a Pledge multi-surface antibacterial cleaner that I like to use on my furniture. It cleans, dusts and can be used on nearly any surface, including glass. I find the best products are the ones that can be used in multiple ways. Thank you.

I think it would be a great collaboration with you and Midwest Magic Cleaning. He helps a lot of hoarders, and coming up with the appropriate cleaning type could be a game changer for some of his clients.

There are reusable washable refills for the Swiffer wand. I have them and they're great.

A quality ostrage feather duster is perfect to grab dust. Lightly move it around nicnacks the shake outside. Quality ostrage duster will hold the dust if used properly. I clip a swiffer on one side of my cleaning apron and a sm ostrage feather duster on other side, microfiber cloth in pocket and ecloth glass cloth in other. Cant live without them. Thank you and Melissa! I have a small house (less than 1000 sq ft). I made the dish soap and water spray. I just dusted, cleaned mirrors and glass, vacuumed and dry mopped the whole house in 30 minutes!! I had never used the dry mop pad and just "sneezed" the floor before ... game changer!

After each shower, I need to wipe the mirror down due to not having a bathroom vent. A couple of years ago, I finally figured out that I can wipe it down with a washcloth or towel! I RARELY need to use cleanser on it since I have begun this.

Love this duo, but... the swiffer duster is amazing ! Sorry, it's the best and easiest duster I have ever used and I have tried many products including the microfiber cloths. I love how well the Swiffer traps the dirt and I love that I just get to throw it out. No pile or dirty rags to wash at the end of dusting my house! I actually enjoy dusting now, so sorry, no chance I'm gonna dump my swiffer duster!!

Me either. The Swiffer duster is amazing. Regarding the environmental damage of the Swiffer. Almost all environmental damage is being done by industrial companies and not by the consumer. These companies have convinced us that it’s regular people who are to blame. They don’t want us to focus our attention on them.

Never wash your microfiber clothes with fabric softener/dryer sheets. The chemicals in those adhere to the fabric and cause streaking. You would have to "strip" them by washing again and using vinegar to get rid of the leftover chemicals

Nope on swiffer, housekeeper at hotel use micro fiber at home and work. First thing you learn is top to bottom. Make the bed before dusting surfaces lint lands during the process. Specific cloth to clean mirrors. Hot vinegar water squeegee and old dish towels for windows. Except car that is the cheapest literal paper to do car with vinegar water. my cordless vacuum reaches cobwebs…. Guilty of ruining my brand new vinyl plank floor with steam mop. I use a soft scrub brush and rag behind to scrub my laminate by the back door…..mud. The mud gets down in the texture of the vinyl plank after a week or so….I don’t wipe my floors daily. Dog’s feet don’t always come completely clean spring lasts all winter now.

Pledge - great for double hung window tracks; spray on, wipe off. Most furniture is sealed therefore Pledge sits on top of the sealant. The aroma is pleasant & reminiscent of our childhood. Fun to dust for Mom & waste lots of Pledge!! xo

I think a collaboration with one of the garden bloggers like Growfully with Jenna, Gardener Scott, Roots and Refuge, or epic gardening would be really great. My shed is pretty disorganized and I'd love to see some good hacks for keeping garden supplies in order.

I use furniture polish for the exterior of my washer and dryer (Just a very, VERY, light spray) and for my bathtub sides only. Then polish with a cloth until it is literally slippery, beautiful and shiny!

I discovered a long time ago that Dawn dishsoap is the BEST bathtub and shower cleaner! That with a cheap microfiber cloth does the trick with very little elbow grease. My husband, bless his heart, will sometimes try to help me clean and he fills the bathroom with the smell of Clorox bathroom cleaner and just about kills us all! He cannot wrap his head around the fact that something so simple and cheap works better than those crazy chemicals. 😮

You clean mold with peroxide, bleach spreads mold spores.
