I put my decanted spice jars in a drawer that’s deep enough for them to stand up. I labeled the lids. I can get the spice I need without having to move other spices in the way. I then added a piece of wood in the back so they don’t move when I open/close the drawer. As a side bonus it’s also prevented me from over buying spice blends. I’ve limited myself to what can fit in the drawer.

I have yet to figure out a good way to store my spices. The cabinet closest to my stove has short, deep shelves. This means that the spice riser won't work, I'd have to turn things around. That being said, I do decant spices and keep them in the jars that came with my spinny spice rack. It's not a great solution, but the one that works for me at the moment. Also, all the drawers close to the stove are skinny and long. I hate the storage spaces in my kitchen, it was designed so badly. I think this is why I have been putting off decluttering my kitchen. :(

I've done the exact same thing with my spices. I originally had them in a cabinet on risers. I hated having to move the ones in front to get to the back ones. I'd end up knocking half of them over just trying to get to the ones in the back. I actually added an adjustable drawer divider behind them to keep them in place. I love being able to open the drawer and see exactly what spices I have and know that I'm not buying duplicates or overbuying.

Thank you for not saying HER name- I still remember when you set a reminder for OUR Alexa to check the sourdough starter. Chaos immediately ensued, setting off our triple ADHD household: She had questions “when?” “Which device?”, etc. which distracted and annoyed my ADHD teen focused on a video game. My ADHD husband also had rather excited questions since we haven’t tackled sourdough yet. He spent the next several days down THAT rabbit hole, reviewing bread recipes and asking if I could resist the extra carbs in the house. By the time I got everyone settled down I had missed the rest of the video and could no longer remember what I was doing. 😂 (after the 3rd “Alexa” I do remember shouting at the video “OMG stop saying her name!!!” 🤣) These videos are usually wonderful at helping us contain and reduce our ADHD chaos, but cheese and crackers, not that day! 😆

It has craft and planning stuff in it. I'm getting ready to redo that space, so it will temporarily go to the garage or laundry room. I need to use quarters (US) to do my laundry and I find that my pill containers are actually really great for organizing them! I know how many quarters I need to do a full wash and dry so I count that out and then put them in the pill bottles. Now I know how many loads are in each pill bottle (they usually hold 2 each) and I can easily count up how much I have to do laundry that week and when I need to go to get more quarters.

Thank you Cas. I talked to you on your Q and A a few days ago and I want to thank you very much. I listened to you and am throwing out boxes of paper. It feels good. I know I need to be in the right mood to do it successfully because if I'm in a FOMO mood, I will second guess everything, So I wait until I'm in the right head space to take a quick look in the box to make sure there is nothing that isn't paper or something I do need to keep (there usually isn't) and then I toss the entire box in the garbage. I won't say I don't have a few second thoughts because I do but I just remind myself of everything you taught me, take a deep breath and I'm okay. This is the first time in my life ~ and I'm a senior ~ that I have done this with paper and it feels so good. I have most everything else under control but this was HUGE. So thank you so much for taking the time to talk to me and help me overcome this obstacle. ~ Scarlett 😺

I've been using the container store multipurpose clear bins for 7 or 8 years. I use them everywhere in my house. The first big job I did with them was in my new upright freezer. It's a major game changer every time I use these in a new space. I also use the hyacinth baskets all over. To save space I have the metal produce baskets mounted in a row under my kitchen cabinets. No more fruit bowl or banana stand on the counter. I wish I had a pantry, but my kitchen is small and I just don't have a lot of space.

Every time I see decanting into containers I want to point out that this works best if you can switch to buying in bulk, especially from a local bulk bin market. I take my empty jars down to the co-op and fill them with however much of the spices or whatever that I need, no throwing away packaging. Before the pandemic I could do the same at the grocery store. // I love re-using nice boxes as trays or dividers inside my drawers.

I'm an artist, so the smalls come in very handy. I even use prescription medicine bottles, without their lids, inside a small cube to toss my scissors in to protect the container, as it's made of painted MDF. Other smalls hold my moldable eraser, electric eraser refills, and water when traveling for watercolor paintings. They are also great for self-mixed paints. As for haunted houses? Never have, never will. I don't even like the whole holiday. When our children were young it was dinner and movie night. One chose where to eat, the other the movie. Their elementary school had a fall festival with athletic games, so no costumes were needed. Oh, and they each picked a bag of their favorite candy for their school lunch and after-school snack before homework and chores before play. They each had their own file card with daily chores written on it.

Thanks Cas for all the tips on organizers. Totally agree on those little containers. I used to use them for my boys lunches for stuff like ranch dressing to dip veg in or maybe salad dressing for hubby's lunch. Not good for much else except lunch stuffs. The slide out drawers...ech. I agree with those too. I have some from when my mom passed that I keep in my office closet for crafting stuff but they really are more of a pain than functional. Now for my little tiny tip...a small multi basket to keep in your living room for things you reach for all the time. Mine is about 8"x4" maybe and has a larger slot and 3 small ones. I keep stuff like a pair nail clippers, nail file, remote, fan, dog/cat brush etc. I keep it on my side table's lower shelf next to my side of the couch and I reach in there daily.

Consider going back to glass containers for decanting. I find that plastic will discolour and cloud. It also absorbs the odour of the food. Glass has been used for hundreds of years and they’re still digging up perfectly preserved glass containers. Sometimes it’s a little heavier to handle, but I find that I prefer it over plastic. I think that over the years we have consumed enough plastic in our body to harm us. Glass can go into the dishwasher and be really well cleaned. I’m just new to your channel and I love it. You’ve got some great ideas. I will stay tuned.

My son used to have one of those organizers you don’t like… One where the bins sit on the racks. it actually worked great. We didn’t overstuff the bins and each bin had a photo on it so my son knew were all of his stuff went. Made cleanup, super easy.

Yes, I love the cube bins! I got a few from the dollar store and they work perfect for storing several pairs of shoes vertically, so I can easily grab the pair by the heels and slide them back in when I'm done; takes up less space than anything else I've tried, I keep it on the bottom of my bookshelf by my door so it's tucked out of the way but still convenient. I have one for my seasonal sandals and another for workout sneakers. I also use a cube bin to hold all the spare vacuum attachments and some cleaning supplies (I have a stick vacuum between the door and the bookshelf as well, so that works out best for my setup). I also invested in some blue recycle logo bins to catch the recycling in a couple rooms. We had just been stacking things on the kitchen counter to take out later, but having a bin makes it easier to carry to the outside bin and the visual look of it is satisfying to me. I have one of those dreaded 3 tier plastic drawers in my closet to hold my socks, underwear/undershirt, and shorts/sleepwear (things not worthy of a hanger). It helps me organize that way instead of a traditional dresser, fits under my hanging clothes, and the clothes are light enough it doesn't cause a problem with opening or closing. (though it can get a bit full as I go overboard every winter buying more fuzzy socks, or more shorts every summer; I use that size container to help limit my wardrobe so if it really can't fit anymore I need to get rid of stuff)

I found that my favorite organizers are the ones I already own. When de-cluttering, put those drawer organizers or bins or even file folders that you find in your "store". That way when you're ready to organize the items you are keeping, the "containers" for them are already available. Just "shop your house" first. Also, my closest "haunted house" is my garage and laundry room with cobwebs everywhere -- YIKES!

I used to volunteer at a haunted house when is was much younger than I am now. That was so much fun! One year I was awarded The Best Scare! My daughter has worked for a local haunted house for a couple of years and loved it! Whenever the kids wanted to go, I was the one ASSIGNED to take them. My wife REFUSES to go! I would just laugh at everything and check out how they did some prop. All while my kids and their friends were screaming and crying and running away from monsters. Now, our city has a Fall Festival where the kids are encouraged to dress up, visit some booths, get candy, ride on the scale trains that community enthusiasts operate, and usually the local star gazer will sponsor a stargazing opportunity after the event. I volunteer as crowd control, get dressed up, play and interact with the kids and just have a fun evening.

Tidy tote you say, here's my thought process about cleaning -- I don't like it. LOL! I love a neat and tidy home, but my attention span is measured in nanoseconds, so cleaning multiple surfaces is no bueno. I do glass day, wood day, floor day, toilets day, carpet day, hard floor day, etc. I carry one cleaning solution and the necessary implements and I just clean that one thing, next day another thing. Also, because I'm old as dirt, I set a timer for 15 minutes work, then take a break, I get the jobs done I just do it in spurts.
