Use dish washing liquid, baking soda (works fantastic), and boiling hot water. Soak for 15-20 minutes and then rinse. Scrub with brush or sponge gently if necessary. Repeat if necessary. The baking soda makes all the difference in cleaning the filter. Yet another use for baking soda too!

I clean my stove vent filters all the time (every couple of weeks) with dawn dish soap and hot water, but I decided to give your OxyClean method a try....... it was fabulous. This was hassle free and quick. Soak for 10 minutes and rinse and done. This is my new go-to method. BTW, I tried using the dishwasher once to clean the filters, but the caustic chemicals ruined/discolored the filters and mine cost over $70 to replace, which I did. I also tried the oven method once, the grease baked onto the filters instead of melting off and discolored the filters a dark brownish-yellow. Yuk

I try to reply but comments have been disables in this video. You boil a pot with water large enough where you can put filter. After its boiling pour baking soda like a cup and after you pour it it will Zizzle then u put in filter let it sit like a minute if it fits the whole filter or just do half of it then turn it over the the undone side. Hope I explained it right and believe me it works.

I did my research but I found that I can't find isopropyl alcohol but only ethyl alcohol 70% - will it do the work as well? And as for hydrogen peroxide, there is only one H202 that containes only 3% of Hydrogen Peroxide in a dark bottle! Do I need to find clean 100% of that or I can use it as well? I didnt know what do because this is my first time having a stove with a hood. I used alcohol ( my hold grail now) i stopped up my sink, poured a bunch of alcohol in, poured a bunch of dish washing soap and i soaked it for 10 mins. OMG what a difference! Then I poured alcohol directly on it, scrubbed it with a brush and then i used the sink hose and MY GOD? I dont know how a brand new one looks, but it looked new to me! You're right about boiling hot water and enzyme cleaners, I use a powder for clothes hand washing and it works wonders after an hour of soaking and minor scrubbing. The downside to it is firstly you have to wear gloves when you scrub cause enzymes are really tough oh the hands, and secondly you have to rinse thoroughly to get the detergent off (especially powdery ones). After all if you do deep fry or just fry on the stovetop often it's essential that you do it once a month or just whenever you see it start building grease. The less greasy, the less time it'll take to clean.

I can't figure out how to post my pic - - - I cleaned my filter about 4 months ago, I don't do much frying. I used a spray mixture I make myself with ammonia and liquid dish soap in it - pretty well dissolves the grease, sprayed it with hot water, then put it in the dishwasher. I agree with what you say about putting it in the dishwasher - we definitely don't want to clog that up with grease!!! Years ago when I had a really badly encrusted filter, I used an auto degreaser on it, then hot water, worked like a charm.

Do you have a tip on cleaning the weird fabric stuff that some filters are made of in the cooker hood ?

Quick question: With the oven method of cleaning, did you mean 250 degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius? I don't have a big enough bucket for the other method, but I don't want to damage my filter

I always put mine in the dishwasher and use enzyme cleaner (1 Tablespoon in the soap dispenser) instead of soap and both come out clean and smelling fresh. Of course I use 1 cup vinegar in a hot wash cycle to take the calcium buildup out of the thing too so that helps keep the drain clean. As for removing them they either slide sideways or pop off. Sometimes the top of your range can flip up as well and it's good to clean that in case of fire. Check the owners manual to read how to open or run your fingers along the edges to look for a lever or switch or just gently but firmly pull up on the edge to see if it pops up. There ought to be a prop to hold it open during cleaning. Note the drip pans and heating elements will need removed before you get up close and personal poking around on you cooker. Best wishes.

The dishwasher concerns me because of the grease build up in the filter...but sounds like you are in a groove with it!

35 years of grease!!!...used oven cleaner initially and then soaked it in a 5 gal bucket of hot water and simple green over night...then ran it under more hot water...got majority of grease off but may at some point try your suggestion of putting in oven on newspapers...will also try mineral oil on exterior which is a copper hood my father in law made for our stove 35 years ago. Actually amazed that the hood and or filter did not catch fire with the mountains of grease build up...

I recently moved into an older apartment and the filters had been... neglected. A hot water soak with a large portion of Borax added to it did an awesome job cleaning the grease off.

Melissa! I don't have a range hood in my kitchen (rental apartment) and yes I assume that is not up to code but since the grease has no where to escape properly (and i cooke with Le Cruset too) the grease sticks on a wire shelving unit that is above the stove, it was added by the landlord for extra storage, this shelving area is pure grease heaven. It's that wire shelving with a white plastic coating on it, do you know what I mean? Anyways how can I get grease off of that type of surface? I can't take the shelving off and soak it because its about 5 feet in length HELP

Mine wasn’t cleaned for 9 months, I soaked it in an industrial degreaser, rinsed it then took it outside and pressure/power washed it with a 150bar machine, with the cutter nozzle on, worked a treat, looked like new.

Is there a way to get rid of musty odors in the home? I recently found your channel (on friday actually) and it has helped me so much already! I'm a teenager and I live with my dad so it's just the two of us, I never really had people to teach me a lot of the cleaning things you teach.

There are A LOT. In fact, that's going to be a video topic we cover soon since we get asked a lot about common household smells. I am so glad I can help you out, Jessi Ferreira - no one really taught me this stuff either, but it's so important to know!

In the 4 years that I've lived in my house, I confess that I've never cleaned my exhaust filters. I always dread it bc it seems too hard to do. Your way makes it seem so much easier. I think I do have some oxy-clean. Thanks! BTW, I guess I'm the only one that noticed, but there's a typo on "exhaust" in the beginning of the video. ;)

This video was posted yesterday, and I cleaned my filters yesterday. I'm actually surpised you didn't mention baking soda. I added my filters to a large pot of boiling water. Then, I added distilled vinegar. Afterwards, I slowly (very slowly!!!) added baking soda. It did the trick!

Oxiclean is also great on greased caked on glass pans, just soak in hot water with about 1/4 cup of Oxiclean.

This worked great on the filters, but now I can’t get the grease off of the plastic bucket! Tried oxiclean obviously and a couple other soaps, but there’s still a nasty slime. Any advice for getting grease off the plastic?

I used the oxiclean soak in a bucket with the filter standing up. The filter developed a black line across it (where the water line was). Not sure how to get it off or what I did wrong. Any suggestions?

My filter is on my over the range microwave and really doesn't get turned on all that much....only when I am boiling water for pasta and such. We RARELY fry anything so there is actually very little in my filter. I have never cleaned it and we have had the microwave for 10 years or so. It is NOW on my list of things to do...as soon as I get some more oxygen bleach! Thanks for another great video!
