Hey guys,
Here is Animenz's and Theishter's REACTION and REVIEW/ANALYSIS to my extended TV-size arrangement of the Darling in the FranXX ED, recorded live in person at their 2018 Masterclass! (I didn't expect to post the video when I recorded it, so apologies for the scuffed audio!)
Bonus fact: This masterclass was held in October 2018, during my exam season and due to not being performance-ready, I lost the opportunity to perform as the opening act at their actual concert (Their concert managers held a contest to give someone this opportunity at each concert venue). However, because I was one of the runner ups, I got to perform at their masterclass instead along with a few other pianists!
Go subscribe to the professional pianists! Huge thanks to these guys for their commentary!

Animenz: "This is the awkward silence where the player is so good that we don't know what to add" Animenz a minute later: gives a bunch of advices and corrections
@AlexYeets
3 жыл бұрын
The reason for that is - they seem to be reviewing from the point of view from someone who 'just listened to it' but then reviewed it from the standpoint of "technical issues which most people would not pick up on are these - this will make your playing stand out much further if corrected." that's how it sounds they were advising him. I do the same with teaching ukulele (I teach banjo-ukulele) and so when I hear a good performance from someone I teach, I tell them that there were very little to no mistakes or anything like that, but at a deeper technical level, they maybe didn't do x, y and z quite perfectly.

As a trained singer, I LOVE hearing him talk about the way that singers have to phrase the song in order to account for breathing. He is correct in the fact that a good singer plans every breath (usually on comas or periods when possible). I always wondered how he made his piano playing sound like a voice, and now I know. He actually acknowledges the fact that what a singer does, is not just what's on the page. A singer can't go straight through a song. We cut notes short and what-not in order to breathe and show emotion. Animenz found a way to put that stylization and life into the piano. He figured out how to make a piano breathe.
@noname8354
3 жыл бұрын
Same with bassoon. If we have to play a single note for a while in band, we plan out when we have to breathe (normally isn't intentional, it just happens). Breathing is important
@alexlei2235
2 жыл бұрын
As a classical pianist, many good teachers encourage their students to breathe when playing. Although it technically isn't necessary to consciously breathe when playing piano, it is an important skill for higher-level pianists. When the difficulty of the piece goes up, it is ever more crucial to not build tension in your body. It will stunt your skills, your musicality, and you can develop arthritis if you're constantly playing when your tendons are tight and later burning. Breathing at pre-planned points after and before musical phrases not only helps you relax, but it also makes you pace the piece better. Tension tends to make people rush or not hang on a note or pause long enough to be satisfying to an attentive listener. Probably something that people don't think about is that classical composers of piano pieces often aren't necessarily creating melodies and harmonies with the sound of the piano in mind. The piano is an orchestra, incredibly capable of playing polyphonically, so the melody might be imitating a flute, while the left hand place a supporting string or brass section. Vocals are a commonly used analogy for interpreting piano pieces. Plenty of music teachers have told me that to imagine how you want to play a passage, sing it first, and notice how the composer wants you to breathe in these phrases.

You can immediately tell how genius these 2 are by the way the can instruct you. Hats off to them as well for not sounding condescending while offering critique/advice. That’s something very hard for most talented individuals to do. This seemed like a mature space just for professionals to just talk. There was absolutely no malice or jealousy or anything toxic that often occurs in other professional settings. Overall good vibes. They seem to have great character and I’m a big fan of the holy trinity/the big 3 of anime piano covers lol. Keep it up Fonzi!

Don't use the word genius incorrectly like that. There are many methods of teaching, and most are effective in their own way. Often, when you are too light on someone, they won't be as efficient at amending a mistake or improving. That's why some prefer to adopt a more regimented approach. Anyway, I digress; just don't throw around the word genius like that, because that makes it lose its value.

And I always thought they exegerate in anime, when they are like: Do this little thing a tiny little bit longer and ... Super interesting video.
@Patiri101

The pedal is reaaaaally important. It can mess up your whole playing if used wrong, but is a fantastic addition, if you use it right. Most piano teachers would teach it like that: Every new bass gets a new pedal. And you play it like they tell you, until you get a feeling for it. And if you already have the right feeling you'll add it where you need it and try it out, until it sounds clean, but also awesome. So yeah, sometimes a little addition, like using the pedal makes a huuuuuge difference! But you need to be careful and don't hold it for to long. That's what he showed there. The difference between a long messy pedal and a short, fast changing pedal can be worlds :3
I swear when Theisther literally just sat down and started playing it, I died. I'm never gonna be that good.

I learned SO much from this! I honestly don't arrange music, and I only play keyboard instead of piano. What an honor to watched this. Both create a special atmosphere to accept and valorate highlights and also detect and improve the weak parts. I heard it as a perfect interpretation, but then I realized about the advices given.
I remember enjoying your covers 5 years ago, and now I watch you getting a masterclass from Animenz himself, it's very surprising to see how far you got, I'm very glad for you, wish you the best pal.
11:00 Yhea, thats the magic of less is sometimes alot more.. amazing
This is amazing!!!!!! I love when you you cover Darling in the Franxx music!!!
You can actually find up to around 10 different levels of sustain pedal in a good grand piano, so it's not an easy thing to get under control by any means. My muddiness improved a lot after I played around with the point where the pedal just kicks in, sort of always holding it down juuuust before it engages so that I can add a tiny brush of sustain easily. Nice video ;).
Glad to see the man behind those inhuman arrangements make casual human mistakes xd

thanks for the good video these are tips that will be taken into account
I'm classically trained and I'm still learning about pedaling. Sometimes marasy does this too, like leave some notes with no pedals but make up for the dryness with a nice reverb The one I that I like for my piano is 92 cathedral. Cathedral I find has the best sound because it doesn't feel limited but not too much reverb like 120 is going to make the sound muddy again
im so happy for you mate
