You seem not to have done Pentatonix' video of "Say Something"? It was memorable for Avi actually singing more than the bass line for a phrase and the first appearance of Kevin's cello. If you haven't reviewed it you might put it on the list for review sometime. It's sad as is appropriate.

I thought of "Say Something" when Sir Hairless mentioned Scott's and Mitch's hand movements in "Dancing on My Own." A little Easter egg for Pentaholics is watching how hard Scott works to keep his hands still, since they're supposed to be a photograph. You can almost see his knuckles turn white.

I love when singers sculpt the song with their hands. You can visualize what they are trying to do with their voice as well as to signal to the members of the band. But I always notice their “somber” moments when Scott is visibly restraining his hands. It shows how essentially his hands are for his voice

Lovely and informative reaction as always. As you mentioned Imogen Heap you might like their cover of her song Aha! It is Avi era and has a fun video. Plus there is *also* a fan video of them doing it live at the Singapore Star Vista which is a huge fan favourite as Mitch goes off. It starts with a nice little classical opening then goes into Aha!. The fan mostly focuses their camera on Mitch, but understandably. They have also covered her Just For Now, but that just has visualisers, although there is a little live video of them doing a snippet of it in a stairwell on their TikTok (I think someone has copied those TikTiks onto KZread somewhere too). There is also another little TikTok snippet of them figuring out how which bit they'll sing.

As much as I as a fan love the fan recording of the song Aha, I'm not sure it is a good one for review and analysis - unless he wants to comment on the fact that Avi blows a speaker close to the beginning! It is generally considered 'the' Mitch slap of all Mitch slaps, but otherwise the sound quality is ... well, it's a cell phone recording. A comparison between the professional recording (a good one for Halloween but lacking some of the drama that the live recording seems to have captured) and the live recording on a cell phone might be very interesting, but would also be a bit long. --JMHO!

@@janices5389 Which is why I mentioned it has a proper video and that the other was a fan recording! But I knew if I mentioned it someone would pop in and say "Star Vista!" I think it is occasionally interesting to compare live to recorded though, but better with the ones that have been done professionally like their live streams from the past few years. They do sometimes make different choices when doing things live which can be interesting to hear.

This was filmed before Avi was actually gone (their management and label didn't want him on any more videos at that point). When he announced in May 2017 that he was leaving, he held to his contractual obligation to complete the tour they were on, and left for good at their last tour show in September. He then took off quite a bit of time, feeling exhausted emotionally and physically, traveling, hiking, visiting his brother in Israel, settling into his new home - his cabin on 1,000 acres in the woods west of Nashville. He laid low, waiting for the clause in his separation contract that restricted him from releasing any of his own work, until that expired in March 2019. He released "Change on the Rise" on the day the expiration took effect. In this video trailer put out by Avi's label, Fantasy Records, to promote his "I'll Get By" EP in 2020, Avi talks about what had been going on for those 3 years. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aJecuZeDaNS9Z5c.html

It’s always so destabilizing when one of your favorite band or group is going through changes... As A fan, you wonder and worry about what will happen with the music, the artists, will it continue, change its style or dissolve into silence?? I remember when The Beatles or The Police broke up, everybody was heartbroken and holding their breath and, luckily, look (or I should say listen) at all the beautiful music we got from Sir Paul and Sting... true artists live on. I respect PTX’s members for their resilience and creativity, together and on different projects and collaborations. They are very hard workers. Thank you again SH. 🤗

Someone mentioned you should check out "Say Something," memorable for Avi's part. I also find it memorable, but for Scott's LACK of hand gestures! They wanted the overall feel of the piece to be more like a photograph or maybe a still life. I can't remember what I read. But I do remember that it became necessary to put Scott squarely between the two chairs where he could hold on so he didn't gesture. To me, it looks like he's got a death grip on those chairs! BTW, I always enjoy Mitch's and Kirsten's gestures because they are more rare. Kirsten is especially entrancing to me when she belts and lifts her hand to the sky.

As a whole, it's a very interesting retrospective in musical form and unapologetically LGTBQ+. My favorite from it is Guy.Exe (Guy Execute, referring to an executable program) Another really good one is Goodbye From Lonely. And a really really funny one that is a 70's callback is Heartthrob. Watching the Evergreen BTS video you will see Scott using his hands constantly. Also in their 2019 BTS tour videos, hand movements are a big part of his personal expression. Not surprising to see it in the videos. Kevin uses that exhale as part of his percussion repertoire so I think that’s him. Excellent reaction. Appreciate you looking into other versions for context. I’ve been listening to the Superfruit version of Rise (Katy Perry) this week. Scott, Mitch, Brian Crum, Mary Lambert, Mario Jose. Done in support of the LGBTQ+ community. Always fascinated and amused by how their hands follow their voices. Another example in this video is 11:30 when they each raise a hand as they come in with their "own". Also the contrast between the mostly up and down movements of the trio, versus the lower and often left to right of Kevin and Avi/Matt. Love the way you break these down so even someone like me, who has no musical ear, can follow the nuances.

You’ve traveled almost halfway through the history of Pentatonix! I always get something new out of your commentary. I love when they shape the music in the air with their hands. I find I can’t sing without my hands anymore, and I blame Pentatonix! 😂 At first I resisted it, like it might be a bad habit, similar to tapping out the beat with our feet like we did in junior high band, but I think it’s more like sign language or dance, it just adds more meaning and emotional expression, (and sometimes it’s just very cute and amusing with these guys, 😂).

Another great reaction, Sir Hairless. I should have guessed this was what you were up to! Does this mean you will be incorporating Matt era songs in your PTX reactions now? This one is quite emotional for the Pentaholics but I genuinely believe it was the right move for Avi and for PTX. We probably wouldn't have had Avi's amazing solo career and also Matt is such a great addition to PTX. He does not have a basso profundo voice like Avi but he has incredible range and can sing very high in his falsetto. He has a lovely vibrato too which is quite rare in basses. His relationship with Kevin is just as good as Avi's was, they like to rap together and Matt plays drums when Kevin does his instrumental 'Kevin's 5th' section in their live shows. I feel like the Trio - Mitch, Scott and Kirsty, really clutched together in this one - almost like that was their 'safe space' to deal with Avi leaving. You can tell they have been friends and singing together since they were kids. At some point, to get a look at real Babytonix, you should watch their performance, age 17 singing Lady GaGa's Telephone at a school concert. Kirsty even does a tiny bit of beatboxing - bless.....!

As always, appreciate the reaction and analysis! This is a video that gets overlooked by many reactors, and I think the emotional impact it has makes it deserve more attention than it really gets. A short note on the timing of the video: Avi announced he was leaving Pentatonix in May 2017, but continued to sing with the group until the conclusion of their fall tour in September. This video was released in the summer of 2017. Like many, I've always thought the cello was the most "human sounding" of any of the string instruments, and an expert cellist like Kevin can really make that come to life. I've always considered the cello part to be the part that we would have heard Avi sing if he were in the video, especially when Kevin starts cello-boxing - those unison notes between the percussion and the cello really sound like an arrangement that you would hear from Kevin and Avi. As you mentioned, this arrangement has the Trio members slipping back and forth between singing lead and harmony, something they always excel at doing. The "Evolution of..." videos are really good at displaying this, as all three flip in and out of lead and harmony without (pun intended!) missing a beat. A song that also displays this, at least for Kirstin, is Coldest Winter, especially a live performance from a Las Vegas concert. She's got the lead for 2 lines, with a small pause between those lines, and during the pause she drops back into singing harmony for 2(!) notes, then continues her lead immediately. The live performance is great because the camera stays on Kirstin the entire time, so it's really easy to see/hear her do it. It's a somewhat newer video with Matt as the bass, but here's the link if you want to check it out (or keep it in your reactor's bag for later). Kirstin's solo starts at 0:37 of the song. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gI2uqbiSmbS2XdI.html

“Clashy by Nature” your first concept for merch? 🤔 Welcome back….and oh, this one, it is a breakup song that has all of the breakup-ie 🤨 feelers to it. 😔 That cello comes in and you see no Avi 😢. And the last look in Scott’s eyes. 😔 I keep thinking about Kevin and Avi being roommates when all first moved to California, and how hard this must have been for KO in particular. 😢 Are we entering your “Matt Era” because I don’t remember “Say Something” which I happen to think is one of their best with KO on the cello. Of course you have 2 hidden videos and it might be one of those? 🤷🏼‍♀️ When PTX was on the “Masked Singer” I knew who they were from the first notes from Scott but also the way he was moving his hands and all of his body language in that crazy costume I knew it was him and PTX. They all move but Scott has to move if that makes sense, and it is distinctive. I am gonna be classy again because I don’t feel like doing my usual sign off but you will see it again, never fear. In general their songs start with the four of them without Kevin's beat and later his beat comes in. Here the Cello covers the bass line and then Kevin comes in with the beat. The visual of a missing Avi, being represented by the Cello, is very moving to me, and I feel it's inspired. I really love how they did this. Thank you so much for your thoughts too. You seemed to touch all the aspects of this one, as usual. It was very difficult to watch this when they first sent it out. Kevin and Avi often referred to themselves as brothers, and shared an apartment and a tour bus for the first few years of Pentatonix. When Kevin was using the cello to "sing" Avi's part, I could feel the hurt. We all moved on, but I love the beautiful chords and how they shared the lead, both of which were very reminiscent of any Avi arrangement, so he really was there, too.

I know a lot of people are going to say this was a goodbye to Avi, but that's never how i saw it. If you listen to the lyrics it's about someone moving on after a breakup after the other person has someone new. When Avi made his announcement to leave ptx, he already had another group he was making music with called Avriel and the Sequoias. To me this is ptx saying they were continuing and moving on without him. At that point there hadnt been any official announcement from them as to what they were going to do without a bass. I believe this was them telling the fans. I think it was more of a goodbye to an era.

Every time you have discussed dissonance or who is singing the clashing note in your pentatonix analysis it is usually Scott or Mitch but never Kristie. I know Kevin and Avi do it too in some songs. Kristie has definitely grown a lot so interested if she takes this role in more recent arrangements. Maybe because she sings the high part it is less common for that to be the dissonant note? I’m not very musically good at picking this stuff up so enjoying your content and seeing everything in a new light

  • @SirHairless

    @SirHairless

    22 күн бұрын

I guess we'll find out as I get to their more recent stuff! In general, though, it's usually the inner parts that provide the dissonance for several reasons, but the obvious one is because the dissonances can be richer when the notes are closer to each other in terms of pitch

The live performance, without the usual post-production tweaking, sounds almost studio. It's a master class in blending and it has DISSONANCE up the wazoo. (You know we both LOVE dissonance.).
