This was done at a time when the group was actively trying to give Kirstie more lead vocals. Prior to this Scott had most of the leads with Mitch having some and Kirstie was more harmony parts with occasional lines of lead. Other songs from the same era are Say Something & Rather Be where Kirstie had the lead for the whole song.

Say Something is one of the ones I also think most reactors should check out, because it's gorgeous. But both that and Rather Be remain some of my favorite covers by the group. I tend to like Kirstin-led songs, maybe because they're the most likely to be in my range. She's also, in my opinion, the member that's improved the most dramatically from their time on the sing-off in terms of her singing ability.

What I really appreciate about Say Something is that Mitch doesn't have a single lead line so the focus can stay on Kirstie given the similarity of their voices.

I think sometimes they pick leads with a similar vibe to the original, but sometimes they intentionally pick leads that contradict the original (Havana comes to mind first but there are loads). Probably a part of making the cover inherently "their own". Love this song and it's one of the early big "Kirstin songs". Also... "Pulsating blob of organized music" is quite the sentence. I 100% get what you mean though haha

One of the trademarks of PTX from their earliest beginnings on the Sing-Off, is their ability to surprise us by not doing what we expect. They succeeded with their fans and judges back then, and have done it again here. I suspect their thought was not to go with the obvious Mitch vs. Sam comparison, and give Kirstie her moment instead. Thank you for the background on the originals, your personal input, the key piano demos, and YOUR trademark sophisticated presentation.

This is from their 2014 EP, PTX Vol 3, when they were starting to get really well known. I love all the songs on the EP and none of them are reacted to enough. There are seven songs, three originals and four covers. One of the originals, "On My Way Home", was written by Coldplay but they gave it to Pentatonix. The other originals are "See Through" and "Standing By". The covers besides this and "Papaoutai" (which you've done) are "Problem" (Arianna Grande) and "Rather Be" (Clean Bandit).

You haven't done Hallelujah (either the video which is on 700 million + views) or one of the live versions, Bohemian Rhapsody (you will have sooo much to talk about on that one!), The Prayer, which as you like Mitch's voice will blow you away, or Sound of Silence. Also their original songs Love again, Sing or Happy Now. Looking forward to the next one! Haha yeah I know! How I see it is I have so many requests in my list that it doesn't make sense in my mind to go with all the super popular ones at once! The one thing I don't have is a deadline (even thought there's never enough time in the day😅) and I know I'll get round to them eventually 🎶 I also need to do the Sing Off performances, as well as other artists! I try to do one PTX reaction a week...I think I've maintained that rate so far Also, I don't really know which ones are popular or not - for example, I was surprised on both this video and Papaoutai when people commented saying there aren't many reactions to these out there So in my mind these two aren't 'rogue' ones because they've been recommended to me a fair few times, if that makes sense? I'm very much looking forward to Bohemian Rhapsody and Sound of Silence (and the others ) Thanks for the support!

I've always felt like this mashup is one of PTX's most underappreciated gems, but I couildn't explain what makes it so special. Your analysis helps me understand, I especially like your "Sir Hairless from the future" keyboard demonstrations. There's nothing like SEEING the chord as well as listening to it! (Do you agree that, ideally, every aspiring musician should start with a keyboard? It's so hard to SEE chord structures on a guitar--even harder if you're looking at four or five clarinets. Music theory is easier to grasp when it's laid out on a keyboard.)

  • @SirHairless

    @SirHairless

    5 ай бұрын

Thanks Jane! I definitely agree that the keyboard is the easiest instrument to SEE chord structures due to equal temperament and the chronological layout of the keys that just make linear "sense" 🎹 As for starting out with keyboard....whilst this was the case for me, I guess it comes down to personal preference and aspirations? If you want to become a professional orchestral violinist, time spent learning piano takes away from violin time That said, I do believe the piano is probably the most useful instrument to know when it comes to seeing chord structures and how things are voiced, and also the fact that you can (feasibly) play up to 10 notes at any one time! And I believe that knowing the keyboard can only benefit musicians as a whole, regardless of what instrument they play The guitar is also good for learning chords, and it's MUCH easier to sight-read with guitar as you don't need to look at your hand positioning from the early stages (unlike piano which takes a lot more time and practice to be able to never look at your hands). But it's limited to 6 strings and, again, comes nowhere close to the piano in terms of 'seeing' the chord structures

Their ability to mashup two separate songs is outrageous to me. IDK who had this idea but I do know that Scott really has an ear for it. I love that you break the song down so we can identify who was doing what. Scott does a cover with Mario Jose called "Lost on You", but the underlying music is a Hans Zimmer instrumental. Scott heard the Hans Zimmer song and had a lightbulb moment that it would fit the Lost on You Lyrics perfectly. Here's the link for a reaction. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hmqlr4-Oj9ibe5c.htmlsi=pMee5Iwj4Irpa8hJ Mario has a powerful voice as well and he was on the crew for Pentatonix when they discovered he had a fantasitc voice. Still amazes me how you're able to pick out everyone's notes at any point. So many people seem to miss the intricacies. I have to do a couple listens when you point it out and I still sometimes struggle to hear what you're picking up. Great ear indeed and great breakdown as usually.

Thank you so much for your analysis. I love how you guide us through the music, especially when I'm not hearing all that you are hearing and all of a sudden....I hear it, too! New Rules X Are You That Somebody is also a great mash-up of theirs. This is one of Matt's first songs with them and his part is epic!

I hope you will listen to the mind blowing O Holy Night ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/hJl-o7drnbvTaNo.html ) in which Matt and Kirsten's singing is outrageous! The passion each one put into this song will make you cry. This song was written by an atheist Placide Cappeau, composed by a Jew Adolphe Adams, and sung by Christians.

So many mash ups coming from PTX, but this La La Latch is my favorite, because PTX has the ability to fuse together two songs, intertwine the different theme and harmonicaly match. First time hearing this song I thought it were a song....

Love to see your reaction to that one. When you get to the Matt era, another great mash-up is New Rules X Are You That Sombody?

I’m beginning to sound like a broken record. Thank you for your skill in explaining complex music to a non-musician. I always marvel at your ability to pick out the individual voices, too. When you’re ready for the Matt era of PTX, their recent Christmas compilation of Christmastime is Here (from a Charlie Brown TV special that ran every year in the US) and Pure Imagination will be a good one to show how they continue to merge two songs in spectacular fashion. Peace …

This is my all time favorite with Avi Kaplan as bass. And the production on this is phenomenal. I really enjoy watching your reactions to PTX. I hope we see more from you. Have you done any Voiceplay reactions? Check them out!! More theatrical than pop/rock, but masters of their own production as they produce, direct, and particpate in every decision as a team!! Once again, amazing reaction by a very interesting young man!

"darling Mitch'. It's not just his range for me. He has this interior stillness, restraint, economy of movement and emotion, phrasing, an elusive mix of sass and shyness, whether he sings background or lead. Mitch, Taka (One Ok Rock) and Ren all have the ability to quite literally wreck me with their artistry --and yet I happily return to listen again and again. I would love to wrap up all 3 in bubble wrap to protect them at all costs :) I love PTX-in-the-round and I love this cover- they all share the spotlight. Kirstie may be the lone female but she is quietly fearless with elegantly rich (emerging) vocals. Scott, captivating baritone lead with heart and soul, 6 feet of unconditional love and humor. Avi and Kevin, rare bookends, a towering mountain range of rhythms, beats, and percussions, that can bend and weave in and around the trio like wind and water. Another great lesson Sir. Is it any wonder I find myself daydreaming, gazing out the university library window.. So much music ...to discover. Baby-steps. Patience.

Now that you've reacted to a good bit of Pentatonix and Home Free, I think it's about time to introduce you to the third member of the holy trinity of a cappella music: VoicePlay! It's hard to pick a good starting point for reacting to VoicePlay since they've experienced more roster changes in recent years than Pentatonix and Home Free, but I'd recommend reacting to their cover of Oogie Boogie's Song. It does a great job showing off the range of their bass singer, Geoff Castelluci.
