Hey everyone! This video is a few hours late because (as you can see by the video) the copyright on this was the most harsh I've experienced to date...pretty ridiculous 🤯I've uploaded the unfiltered version to my Patreon. Believe it or not, the filter you see in this video is the first that didn't get immediately blocked completely. This was attempt number 7 (or 8...kind of lost count 😅) of increasingly harsher filters. I don't know what's going on with some of these PTX copyright issues but they're getting a bit silly ANYWAY...hope you enjoy 🎶 Check out my other PTX reactions at this playlist: kzread.info/head/PL-tAjLxAAkA9QsmC8pTH2x4La4cIws5Us

I get that the label is trying to protect the artist ( or, more so their own meal ticket) but they should really be worried about the reactors that dont really react and just replay the song on their own channel. You clearly react and analyse and what you do actually adds to people's appreciation of the music. It seems ludicrous that you still have to jump through hoops to put these videos up. Regardless, thanks for putting in the effort to bring us the content.

I ‘stumbled’ onto PTX through a reactor about 6 years ago. Ice since attended 3 concerts, and purchased literally everything they’ve put out. I get copyright and making money off of someone else’s work, but for me I may not have even discovered these guys without a reactor. Seems like good advertising in a way.

My husband has told me that of the reactors that I follow, you are the only one who has adequately explained the songs. Yes, he's a music major. I, however, can barely sing but we enjoy watching shows like "The Voice" together. I can catch when someone is off better than he can and explain why I think someone is better than someone else. We have discussed the differences often. He gave me ptx tickets years ago and we almost didn't get married because he wanted to leave right after the concert, and I insisted that there would be an encore. I was right, they came out and sang bohemian rhapsody. Yes, I rubbed it in with several I told you so 's. We are celebrating 5 years this month.

@heidifruchtl354 oh yes, I also went to that tour. Originally they had Aha too as an encore that year, but after the first 2 shows in, they dropped it and just did bohemian rhapsody. Mine was the third show of that tour and I was disappointed to miss it. That's the only show I've been to where they haven't done aha. Must've been too hard on Mitch's voice to do both at the end of the night. Kevin too. They both have crazy parts in those songs.

Two things about Ptx fans who watch reactors, we’ve all seen their videos numerous times and are very aware that their label is trouble. We are used to people putting filters on the videos. Some to the point that you can’t see it at all. It’s got to be frustrating for reactors, as Ptx videos tend to bring large numbers of viewers to your channel. I heard the same that the cello is closest to the human voice. An example of a bass voice sounding like the cello is in Avi solo EP while he was still with PTX on his song Fields and Piers, kzread.info/dash/bejne/YpVhq9WmotrfkbQ.htmlsi=sVdQ95Qj07CaMeSw. Kevin is not seen but he plays the cello on this song.

I too have heard that about the cello and the human voice. I wish I could remember where. Edit: I looked it up. It's been said by a few people, but the earliest instance I can find is from cellist Steven Isserlis in 2011. 🙂 Edit: further research.. Simon Parkin in 2022 said that "the cello is the only instrument that encompasses the range of the human voice."

Yes! I'm listening to Fields and Pier as I write this. (Note: On this songs and others from the same time, the artist is listed as Avriel and the Sequoias. Avi made it clear that the name doesn't refer to him and a specific group of collaborating musicians; it's just a name for himself and the trees that were such a significant part of his youth.) On this song, he asked Kevin to tune his cello lower than usual, and he doubles the "voice" of the cello in one segment. It's uncanny.@SirHairless, please consider reacting to this track!

I've heard others say this is the most restrictive song that PTX does because of copyright. Probably because you have both PTX and Lyndsey Sterling to go through. I love this song and this arrangement. Great job picking out all the great reasons it sounds so good. It's amazing that once you point out some of the individual parts, it becomes easier to hear those parts. So thanks for opening my eyes (and ears) to what it is that sounds so great.

I haven't finished watching your reaction, but when you commented about the cello and Avi's voice, it made me really want to request "Fields and Pier" by Avriel and the Sequoias. Avi's voice and Kevin's cello get to play in that song too - beautiful! Now that I am finished: I feel for you with the copyright issues. I have heard a lot of people complain about especially harsh issues with this song in particular. This is one of my favorite songs by PTX for repeat listens, and probably my favorite collaboration. DANG! I've watched this 5x back to back and I'm still processing! Having been a viola player, I felt this was a song, with instrumentation, where I had an advantage. As you noted, the violin goes down to the G. (E, A, D, G). Cello (A, D, G, C) and Viola up an octave (A, D, G, C). Watching the fingers, bow position, hand position (1st, 3rd, 5th, etc) I was able to really pull the two string parts apart and make sense of all of it.... or so I thought! O.H. M.Y. G.O.S.H! I had missed so much. This is not one of my top 10 PTX covers, but it is damn sure my favorite PTX reaction by you so far. Missed Avi vs Cello. Missed Mitch splitting Scott and Kirsty. Missed Scott and Kirsty starting on that E flat together and splitting to the B flat/C. Completely missed the two measures of the mystery voice singing those Fs. Never noticed it at all. I thought the hemiola was a triplet.... and on and on I could go. This is a totally different song for me. I just can't stop watching you go over it and over it. I wish I could have done a video of myself and shown you my face and reactions. I'm blown away... I just can't even put it into words.... Dang! I'm literally shaking! Thank you. DANG!

Speaking of sounding like a cello, I cannot wait for you to get into their Matt era!! I've been a Pentaholic since day 1 on The Sing Off & absolutely adore Avi & his sound & contribution to PTX, but I love Matt just the same!! The infectious energy he brought to PTX is such a joy, & his chemistry with the group both as a person & with Kevin on the foundation is just as tight & strong & his range is MASSIVE. His voice is so buttery smooth & I have to do a double or triple take sometimes when Kevin brings out Beyonce (his standard cello; his electric is named Mr. Carter) Matt's voice sounds so much like a cello in certain places in hia voice, it always makes me smile! Once you get into that (2017 & forward) you will get to see their 3rd collab with Lindsey, on their EPIC upgrade of the Christmas song "Over the River".

  • @neetgupta1

Another great and informative reaction Sir Hairless, thank you as always! As others have said, please don't worry about the filter, us Pentaholics know all their videos really well so we're happy to see them heavily filtered (even though those of us who can pay for Patreon are lucky enough to see them unfiltered!). To be honest, even if you can barely see the video, that's good enough for most of us. I don't like it when I can't see the video at all (which some reactors resort to) because that disconnects the reaction but I'm fine for it to only be slightly visible. It will probably be less stressful for you to just bang a fairly opaque filter automatically on all their videos to save yourself the hassle! I like this one (I like all their songs! 😁) but it's not my favourite of their covers. I do like Lindsey Stirling's beautiful violin playing and Kevin on the cello in it though and the apocalyptic video. Did you notice that Kirsty's favourite Steampunk aesthetic crept in there with the goggles that I think are the same ones in the Love again video?! I do always get a further appreciation of their songs when I hear it again through your ears and musical knowledge. While you're still in the Avi era, I can't wait for your analysis of Hallelujah and Aha, live in Singapore. I think Hallelujah is the most popular ever a cappella song on KZread - over 700 million views, which is insane! A few hundred of them must be mine! 😂 For a lot of people, this one gives them their first Mitch-slap! Looking forward to the next reaction. My bet for what will blow you away like Imagine, Bohemian Rhapsody and Carol of the Bells did (and those are my favourites of your PTX reactions - and in fact of all my PTX reactions - i've watched them probably 20 times+ each!) are, in terms of covers, The Prayer, Say Something, the Evolution of Beyonce, Aha Live in Singapore, Hallelujah and Kiss from a Rose. Let's see if those ones reach 9+ in the ratings! I don't think I've seen anything over 9.75 (Carol of the bells?) for any of the reactions on your channel. I would love it to be PTX who secured a 10! We'll see! In terms of originals, i think the next one should be Sing - it's a bop and a cool video including lots of their fans and celebrity pals. Till next time - thanks again!

I was wondering about the steampunk goggles! Not if they were the same pair But that aesthetic definitely triggered in my mind. Someone else linked a behind-the-scenes video which was a very cool insight into the video Yes, Hallelujah is definitely 'the' acapella request that I've seen all over the place. I'm thinking of maybe doing it for a certain milestone or something... but luckily there's plenty of other PTX works out there to keep me going for now Cool! Those are the 3 of my highest PTX ratings You're right - Carol of the Bells is the highest rating I've ever given I'm also unsure about 10s...we all rate things differently and I'm wondering if a 10 means there is nothing I can fault at all about it, or if it's something that is near to perfection in my mind I'm not THAT hard to please so who knows

This is one of the first songs I heard by them!! Turned them into one of my favorite groups of all time. I'd been into Lindsey for a little while, mostly for her covers of game music and the like, and then this collab came out and I immediately looked up everything else that was out by Pentatonix, which at the time wasn't all that much. They'd released a total of 17 previous covers/medleys on their KZread channel; and just a handful were official music videos, most of them were single-take standing or sitting videos. This song definitely has a special place for me because of that, and between this song and their following video, Evolution of Music, they started to get more attention here. They started getting advertising deals, you can see the quality of their videos shoot upwards around now, and a year or so later they released the Daft Punk medley which gave them their first Grammy and is their second most viewed video on KZread. It was a great time to get into the group

One of my favorites, I love the interplay of the strings. I'd be thrilled if just Kevin and Lindsey did a project together and even more thrilled to hear your analysis, Sir. Your breakdown on this collaboration, though, was excellent as we have come to expect. I hope you have some of Kevin's solo work slated for future reaction. I know you'd enjoy breaking down what his mind comes up with. 😂

Tommy has been providing music to floor Jansens ( nightwish) Covid covers ( adagio, frozen 2, oblivion) and is a very good musician and singer

Beautiful review as usual. Lindsey was much more well known than PTX when they did this collaboration which is why she does the outro and suggests people subscribe to them. The video is again done by Fifgen Films as were several others including Daftpunk. 2 members of which are now The Hound + The Fox who also collaborate with Tim Foust and Adam Chance of Home Free. There is a great behind the scenes that PTX recorded to show the video being staged. Not to mention the "recording technique" for Kevin on cello in Avi and Kevin's apartment. I think that is also Ben Bram in the corner in the apartment. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZJijlLhxnK3Qfps.htmlsi=uUQ5_2P-7iRqkbRg

You beat me to the punch with the behind-the-scenes video, Gail, lol. Sir Hairless, you might be interested to know that FifGen Films, who Gail referred to, not only filmed and edited the "Daft Punk Medley", but also "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy", "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", "Can't Hold Us", "Love Again", "I Need Your Love", "Save The World/Don't You Worry Child"; and some with Peter Hollens, in particular his beautiful duet with Avi Kaplan in "Black Is The Color of My True Love's Hair" (which you really need to react to, Sir). Oh, and they've done ones for Home Free, as well, including "Ring of Fire", featuring, once again, Avi Kaplan. Jimmy Bates, president of FifGen, also did the video for Avi's solo original song "Aberdeen", shot near the White Mountains in California mostly using a drone.

@@SirHairlessoh good. It may not be the most challenging but it introduces you to Peter Hollens and it was amazing to me because until then no one had heard Avi sing anything but deep bass with Pentatonix. Peter developed the multiple frame style with Fifgen Films for his own work.

I would think that your r/a videos would (should) easily meet the Fair Use exemption.. it’s clearly a music/music theory education that I could argue we should be university credits for, and ‘they’ should not be torturing our Professor. Folks who have followed ptx for awhile are used to having the videos heavily filtered and we’ve either watched the original video enough to have it memorized visually, so, myself, I hardly bat an eye. It’s tortuous for you guys trying to upload your hard work. I’d almost just say to automatically heavily filter anything with ptx label, save your energy and sanity. If there’s a link to the original, anyone can pop over to ptx page and see it (After watching your most excellent analysis, that is), if they are unable to become a patron at the moment. I’ve seen too many reactors just completely stop doing ptx because of the hassle. I very much hope you’ll continue, and just not stress too much about the filtering. I’m not positive, but maybe their new contract only covers Christmas albums, anything else is self-released so no label restrictions? Seems like I read that but would like confirmation from anyone who might know better. Thank you for all you do to enrich and educate us…. for me, you take a song I already like and help me love it even more. And introduce me to new artists, which is a great thing. Sometimes these harsher labels are cutting off their nose to spite their face🤷🏻‍♀

What an excellent reaction, make that, analysis. I enjoy your work as some the things you point out, I would never have been aware of and it onlly enhances my appreciation of the artistry. Given the number of comments already, I'm assuming that pretty much anything I could say, has been said. But, on the off chance no one has mentioned this, regarding your comments about them each being separate entities but working together. During an interview, Lindsey was asked about her colabbs with Evanescence and Pentatonix. She said, paraphrasing here, that on the Evescence song Hi-Lo, Amy Lee had left a few holes for the violin and wanted Lindsey to 'just shred!:. Then, about this video, Lindsey said that she was just trying to fit in, to become the sixth Pentatonix. She is a frequent colabb-er, sometimes un-credited, as she's a musician at heart and always puts the assignment first. I haven't anything she can't do. Again, great reaction!

I love this collab with Ms. Sterling! She and Kevin really click when they play. I know that there have been copyright issues for quite a while now, and it makes me wonder....when it comes to the songs they cover, do you know what the process is? They've covered so many great songs, I'm just curious about what they have to go through to get permission to do so. As always, Sir, your reaction and analysis is entertaining and informative. A rare talent and a hard thing to find

It's an interesting question! I was looking into the world of copyright the other day - specifically regarding PTX actually - and there is a lot of mention online that they often don't actually need the original artist's permission to do covers? I can imagine there are a-million-and-one nuances surrounding this though 😅 And thanks! 🙏🏽

At 5:40, you mention how the timbres are similar between the vocals and the cello that they're almost indistinguishable. I'd highly recommend that you react to Lindsey Stirling's song Love Goes On and On featuring Amy Lee from Evanescence. In it you hear Amy hitting notes at the same time as Lindsey's violin where they're almost indistinguishable from each other. I think you'd like listening to it. Actually, Lindsey hadn't expected Amy to sing on it. She'd sent the song to Amy to ask if she might have some lyrical ideas for the song. Instead of sending back ideas, Amy sent back a full set of lyrics for it and offered to sing it. lol Lindsey had wanted to collab with Amy since she did the song Shatter Me but their schedules wouldn't match up well enough. So she'd gotten Lzzy Hale from Halestorm to do the vocals. Here, Amy was able to do the vocals for the song. I think it's a great collaboration and I hope you check it out.

We’ve all asked him for Matt songs. He said he’s in the Avi era and won’t get to Matt until he’s done a large portion of the songs from Avi’s time. There’s so many good ones from Matt’s time too, i hope he gets to them soon. And with doing all Avi first, I hope he doesn’t get like some past fans have, and think well now they have a different sound and I’m going to stop listening. Those people have missed out on so much. Especially as Matt’s voice has matured and he now has songs that were arranged with his voice type in mind. I love that his voice fits in so well with the rest of the group since he sings in a more poppy and soulful way.
