Marillion are loved world wide, I believe they invented crowd funding. They once back in the 90’s announced a new album tour and the USA was not part of the itinerary due to the expense. The American Marillion fan base (without band provocation) raised enough money for them to get to the USA and the rest is music history.

I think composition-wise Ocean Cloud suffers a bit from the same problem as the New Kings does in places, in that some of the transititions to new sections are less than subtle... it's almost like a straight cut or a hard switch here and there (this always has been a bit of a problem with many of their long-tracks)... in my honest opinion they have more deserving songs (Neverland indeed, yes - but also Quartz, Power, the Great Escape, Berlin, Happiness is the Road, White Paper. this is the 21st Century (*pointless end-noodling aside hehe), Montreal, yadda yadda - not to mention some of the great Fish-era stuff like Fugazi, Incubus and White Russian - all these are pure class from start to finish*

I’d recommend listening to the first 3 songs (Hotel Hobbies / Warm Wet Circles / That Time of the Night) together as one suite. That engine noise in the final section is a spitfire aka Battle of Britain is referring to the last time the British people joined together to meet a common threat and that we would be unlikely to do that in modern times because the world has changed to everyone for themselves. I think the crash in section 3 is the 2008 financial crash and questions if it was actually a manufactured crisis which allowed some folks to make a lot of money from it. I’m British and I’m seeing this song from a brit band in a very British perspective though. Massive fan of these guys have been since they started used to work and live near Aylesbury UK were they originally formed.

I love the line "why is nothing ever true". Classic H (Steve Hogarth) play on words. True means factually correct, but it also means "loyal", and also "straight". Fuck everyone and run is litterally how the "New Kings" behave, fuck everyone over and then run away.

Hi Doug. Glad you had a chance to experience Marillion at this level. I've been following them since the mid-80's and they have become one of my, if not my, favorite band[s]. They're leaders in a variety of ancillary fields: • They're one of , if not the, first bands to: go online/have a website that they control • Crowd-fund both their studio work and their concerts • Now crowd-funding their INSURANCE for cancellations due to Covid/illnesses/unforeseen catastrophic events [with a refund policy to boot] • Hold fan-specific events - Marillion Weekend - across the globe, etc. • They also took complete control of their work by ending their contracts with the music industry and taking everything in-house Additionally, they have nearly ALL of the concerts they've performed over the past two+ decades available for download via their website. Yes, you have to pay for them but they're worth it. You get to hear and experience a band night after night playing to audiences across the world, hear the band's interactions and uncompromising musicality and abilities, the mistakes, the goofiness and, frankly, the love they share with and for their audiences. Paul Burton: I agree with your comment on Rothery. Spot-on. Ditto to Lou D: I'm fairly certain you're correct: they invented crowd-funding ChrisEchoes: Absolutely see them LIVE! Even if it's just one of their DVDs. They're fantastic. Some of the most emotional work you will witness. Cheers for your wonderful and expert review of Marillion. As Nathan wrote below: All the best freaks are here [look that up...] AjH

Loved this tour. Got to see a show on election night 2016 in Times Square. What a show. Driving down and taking ferry across to where Hillary had her election night party. While in Times Square Trump close by. Waiting to get into the venue the early returns started coming in. Hogarth mentioned in a joke that some of the band members should run for President. Great show and great result in politics. A very memorable night. Saw this tour again in February 2018. They were playing places in America they do not usually play. A nice small venue is where I went in Atlanta. Was pretty close and me and two others simultaneously yelled out sing “ white paper”. Hogarth said back “if you be quiet I will sing it.” They did not sing it the past few shows. So it was great when he sang it and the show was great. Saw them so many times over the decades including many times at the “ chance” in Poughkeepsie NY. Great time club and was so close in many occasions. I hope they come back to America. They are doing a Few Cruise shows so might have to go.

Marillion, the soundtrack of my years. An interesting first choice of song, and probably not one the fans of either era of the band would have been clamouring for, but it does represent very well where the band is at now. Like Rush in the 1980's Marillion is a band that became much better at writing and arranging as they became less overtly complex and showy. I would add my voice to those suggesting Ocean Cloud and This Strange Engine for further exploration. The Brave album is a masterpiece but probably not instantly digestible. From the Fish era of the band, the Hotel Hobbies, Warm Wet Circles, That Time of the Night trilogy is easily the most cohesive and expressive writing the band produced during that period.
