Dio = God Black Sabbath = A day of rest to honor Satan They come together to make an album called Heaven & Hell that's an all-encompassing masterpiece. The symbology is quite powerful.

Die Young on this same album is incredible… has amazing energy to it.

The whole album is incredible. I LOVE The Ozzy era Sabbath albums, but H&H and The Mob Rules are just a completely different animal. So majestic, without losing any of the heaviness.

Its a Masterpiece album..

One of the best mixed metal albums ever! No instrument was buried in the mix. You can single out the bass, drums, guitar, or vocals on every track. Amazing!!

Martin Birch was a master. No coincidence that this song reminded Doug of Iron Maiden: Birch produced the '80s Maiden records too (along with Deep Purple - Machine Head and Rainbow - Rising). An underrated genius of hard rock and metal.

I don't comment much as I'm usually late to the party. What I love most about this channel is having loved heavy metal for the last 35 years and the genre generally being looked down upon, and here we have a trained musician analysing some of my favourite tunes. I love it when sometimes a chord change takes you by surprise (Opeth Harvest is one of my faves), but you see the craft and musicianship within.

At 54 years old & being a proud life-long metalhead - I graduated high school in 1985, talk about a great era for metal! - I have constantly been in awe at the sheer disdain, disrespect & flat-out ignorance that has been directed towards heavy music as long as I have been alive. Dumb statements that it's just a bunch of noise, it takes no talent to play, the people involved, be it artists or fans are uneducated, dregs of society... and yet I'm reading the lyrics and thinking "um... are you aware that this Iron Maiden song is based on the classic poem by Samuel Taylor Coloridge "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" from 1798?!" And, as I also started playing guitar in 1987, I can attest that it is waaay easier to play the same old recycled 12-bar blues for the 9 jillionth time than it is to play "Disciples of the Watch" by Testament! A song, by the way, based on the book "Children of the Corn" by Stephen King. Sure, you've got your "Nothin' but a Good Time" by Poison types of songs, then there is Deep Purple's "Child in Time" which refers to the horrors of the Vietnam conflict(as does Black Sabbath's "War Pigs"). It's high time hard rock & heavy metal were given a fair shake based on their actual substance, not preconceived notions.

I love that a lot of my favourite bands from that era are still recording and touring as senior citizens. Saw Iron Maiden before Covid and they were amazing to say the least.

@@tralph40 totally! I am planning on seeing Judas Priest w/ Queensryche in Tucson, AZ in November. I was supposed to see Black Sabbath in Boston when they reunited with Ronnie James Dio as "Heaven & Hell", but I got sick & couldn't go... then Ronnie passed away. 😢

Saw Black Sabbath back in ‘08 when they toured with Judas Priest. Dio had some of the most powerful vocals I’ve ever heard. My wife was 7 months pregnant with my son when we went, and to this day he loves Dio. I like to think the concert left an impression on him even when he was in the womb lol

Saw him in ~86 for the Sacred Heart tour. I was really into his solo stuff, and ofc, Sabbath with Dio(and Rainbow). It was a tremendous concert; CNE Stadium in Toronto, Canada..open stadium. The drums rattled my chest in my seats..50 rows back (again, open air) and Appice's awesome drum solo was mind blowing for me..lights on the ends of his gong sticks.and was told the sound system was 50k W...Def the loudest outdoor concert i've been to, to this day. 🤘🤘

Ronnie once said that out of all the albums he's recorded throughout his career, he was most proud of Sabbath's "Heaven and Hell."

Geezer's bass always flawless.

Reminds you of Maiden, in part, because this album was produced by Maiden's long-time producer, Martin Birch (pre-Maiden). No way does this album turn out as good as it did without Martin's involvement.

There are also elements of Rainbow in there. Iommis guitar tech at the time was DAWK, who had been working with Blackmore before. Martin Burch had also worked with Rainbow before.

For me, it's mostly the galloping bass which is pretty typical of both Geezer and Steve (even more so). And Martin Birch was good at getting it fairly upfront in the mix.

That's why 40 years later classic metal is still very popular as it's timeless . It's lyrics are not about current trends or pop culture so the music never becomes dated . Blended with incredible musicians this style of metal will still be listened to in 200 years from now much like classical music while a band like KORN for example will not be relevant in just 30 years from now ..

One of the stoner kids in my Junior English class copped Metallica's Escape word for word. Even be so lazy as to repeat the chorus "Lifes for my own to live my own way" exactly like they do in the song. It was so obvious that he had just copied a song. The teacher thought it was amazing. I almost spoke up, but I liked the kid and I'm very against snitching.

One of my favorite songs, Love the lyrics. Dio considered this song as well as the album the work he was most proud of. He thought it was his best.

R.I.P RJD ... the True GOD of Rock , Love the fact you choose the Studio Version ... Alot of reviewers just grab LIVE recordings although been good sometimes miss what the band where aiming for in the Recording ! ...

Someone I think who doesn't always get the recognition they deserve is Geezer Butler on bass. I've had the pleasure of seeing him at work from reasonably close up and he's absolutely dancing up and down that fretboard, but making it look like the easiest thing in the world. No flash, no fuss, just laying down the rhythm to Tony to solo all over. This track is a great showcase for that.

Pure musical brilliance .. and that voice ..

Geezer Butler is one of the elder god kings of the metal bass guitar, up there with Cliff Burton and Steve Harris.

Even though RJD passes away in 2010 I still miss him. Saw him 7 times, 4 as Dio and 3 as Heaven and Hell. Was fortunate to see his final performance at the House Of Blues in Atlantic City on August 28, 2009. I almost didn't go. He still sounded amazing even though he was sick with cancer, he just hadn't been diagnosed yet. Dio always seemed to be having the time of his life when he was on stage, never saw a bad show from him.

Saw him on the Strange Highways tour at a festival during (arguably) the lean years of his career... Most of the crowd left after Motorhead played and there was only maybe a few hundred people there at the most. I was able to get up there REALLY close to the stage. DIO came out and played like he was at Castle Donnington in front of 100,000 people. It was truly an amazing experience and a testament to his love for his fans, AND something I'll never ever forget. He was one of a kind and I miss him so much! 💔 🤘

Best Sabbath album ever - Ronnie nailed every track!!! It's fecking awesome!! Not a bad track on the entire album!!!!!!!!!!!

This whole album is a masterpiece. IMO it still hold up and is fantastic from start to finish. There are no throw-aways there.

"You get to keep the gold that falls" I never knew that lyric since the original album sleeve omitted that last part in the lyrics, and my friends and I could never quite make out that line. Now I know!

Symptom of the Universe by Black Sabbath is a good listen whenever you loop back to them

It is like no one writes or composes music like like this anymore....that's why it stands the time of being iconic.

This is my album of albums and there is just something that goes so deep musically. No one is writing albums of this calibre anymore. RJD is at his best here with Tony Iommi and brings out the best I have heard him play also. Fantastic!

This was the first album I bought when I was a teen in the early 80s. It still blows me away every time I hear it. Incredible talent.

It doesn't need more solos. It's absolutely perfect as it has ben presented.

This is one of my favourite Sabbath albums, an absolute classic.

I think the way Dio sings the line "I can tell" at 3:38 sounds absolutely incredible. He took the bonus points from reduced height and used them to max out voice, charisma and personality. Good choice, Ronnie!

Great job Doug....as usual. I was fortunate enough to have met Dio back in the early 80's and he actually took the time to talk with me at length before one of his shows in Connecticut. At one point, Dio lived in Connecticut with his wife. He was a "real person and gentleman" and didn't let his stardom precede him.

When I was 12 a friend of mine moved from Scotland and introduced me to this album and Mob Rules and it got me into metal. I still try to listen to them as much as possible. Such powerful albums!

The album as a whole is incredible: Neon Knights, Children of the Sea, Die Young, and Lonely is the Word are all classic songs along with Heaven & Hell, and Lady Evil, Wishing Well, and Walk Away are all fun in their own way.

Sign of the Southern Cross from Sabbath’s Mob Rules is probably Ronnie’s best vocal performance of all time. You should do that one next.

Missed this on vacation. My favorite Sabbath song and probably my favorite metal song and top 10 songs overall. The bass, the riff, the lead, the vocals, the lyrics wow even now.

Preach brother! The first song I ever sang live w/ a band was Dio’s Last in Line and it made me appreciate Ronnie from a vocal standpoint but also a lyrical standpoint. Took music theory, harmony & ear training, sight singing in college and was educated in various forms of music but I always find that music like this is what gets me going. Digging the channel! During an open online interview years ago someone asked Ronnie who the dancer is in the lyrics “but nobody bleeds for the dancer/you’ve got to bleed for the dancer” This was his answer ”The dancer is the free spirit unfettered by chains and not confined by four walls. This song and this album was my introduction to Black Sabbath, as an impressionable 11 year old I was absolutely blown away! Then went into the back catalogue with We Sold Our Souls For Rock and Roll. Have been a die hard fan ever since. My first concert was a few years later with Ian Gillian on vocals for the Born Again Tour.🤘🤘

I love this song. I remastered it and brought the dB up for the acoustic piece at the end. I remember putting that record on in 1980 and thinking yeah Ronnie, that will do nicely.

This song is in my top 10 of Black Sabbath songs, with Children Of The Sea as my No.1 favourite. The Heaven And Hell album is my favourite of the Black Sabbath albums also. I see no reason why you couldn't also react to a live version of this song also, as the middle section is different, and Ronnie makes sure the crowd interact with him, which is a good thing.

Ronnie has just such an incredible and powerful voice, fantastic to listen to. You should check out Computer God from the Dehumanizer album, really great song. Great riffs, drums and of course, GREAT VOCALS. RIP RONNIE, won't be another like you
