The Dio years in Sabbath are just as respectable as the Ozzy years. I love Dio's Sabbath stuff.

I prefer the Dio Sabbath stuff to Ozzy's. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot to be said for Ozzy's Sabbath, but Dio just made them sound so much better.

@Bornaking Agreed. Only reacting because of the shared moniker. But yes, or it could be seen as a natural and healthy progression of Tony Iommi's musical vision..

@Bornaking Yeah, Dio's writing, made the band write differently. I couldn't imagine Ozzy doing Dio era songs, and I can't imagine Dio doing Ozzy era songs. Surely, Dio had to, when he first joined Sabbath.

Those of us who love and adore DIO, have said for years, "DIO in studio is amazing. DIO in live performance, even more amazing." The Man always gave 110%, always, even when unwell or tired from months on the road. The fans were of utmost importance to Ronnie, like family. His Voice is just astounding, all the nuances and tones, and plenty of coaches here on KZread have listened to Ronnie's Singing and just been blown away, especially when they realize Ronnie was in His forties in the 80's. Yeah. At about the time male singers' voices start losing power/strength and tone, and there was Ronnie, affectionately dubbed "Old Leather Lungs' by some, hammering out song after song. Part of why Ronnie's Voice was so powerful, has been determined that the formative years spent playing the trumpet, gave His lungs more strength than the average performer out there. Plus Ronnie was big on exercising, another reason why He could bounce all over the stage and not lose breath.

Before the Beatles and Stones. And over 15 years before his breakthrough with Rainbow. You reacted to their song Stargazer. And yes, that debut song isn't remotely metal. 4) RIP Ronnie. You want the live versions of the songs and you should know that he's done these over many years so the show changes. Alice Cooper pretty much started Shock Rock/Horror Rock. Black Sabbath also started at that time. Alice Cooper is the son of a Preacher and a devout Christian. Yet he does this hard rock horror show. I think Dio's #1 criteria for being a band member "When you play you have to own that Chit" I had the pleasure to see him in concert about a dozen times in the 80's and if I could go back I would do it all over again. One of the last great performers.

Ronnie is on his own level. He is so far ahead of any other singer in the Rock genre and it’s not even close and that includes Freddy Mercury. To understand that you have to listen to everything he’s done throughout his career. If you think of Ronnie Dio as just a heavy metal singer than you really don’t know who Ronnie Dio was. His career prior to Black Sabbath, which I consider his entry into the heavy metal genre as most of Rainbow was classic rock, was 22 years long and touched on damn near every genre of music you can imagine from Lounge music crooning to Doo Wop, to blues m, folk, honky tonk, pop to rock to prog rock. He could sing any genre and he sung better than most in all of those genres. Ironically, it was his ability to sing great regardless of genre that made him so unique. He was technically brilliant despite the fact he had no vocal training and he was extremely charismatic both on and off the stage and those two facts alone put him near the top of most people’s top vocalists list. The one thing he does better than anyone else is sing live. The single most difficult part of being a vocalist and should be the singe most important. NO autotune and believe it or not he NEVER warmed up either. It was all god given talent and incredible technique. God broke the mold after he created this guy.

Jamel, back in the day, how we judged bands was how good they were live. Great bands were BETTER live. Dio was one of those artists. Studio tracks are great, especially if you're not that good. Live separates the men from the boys, and Dio was a juggernaut live. I saw him on this tour. Mind blowing.

I know you like the live versions for the energy and what not but this was not the greatest live performance. Yes, his voice is on point but this is his solo band. He was with Black Sabbath when this song was made and it's missing that Sabbath magic. Also, they didn't even do the pickup at the end, which is the best part of this song IMO. Check out the studio version sometime and you'll see what I mean. I always recommend the original version of a song for a first listen, so you can get a feel for it and then move on to live versions.

The 'sheets', with drawings on them...were drawings...fans had made. And Ronnie...being a nice guy, was the type of guy, who would, during performances...'show them off to the crowd'. Can you imagine...being a 13, or 17, year old kid...who took the time, to draw his favorite artist, on a huge sheet...get tickets to Ronnie's show....only to have Ronnie stop in the middle of his performance, and show the crowd the work the kid had done? It was just Ronnie's way of saying thank you, to whatever kid it was that took the time to do the work. Kid probably got so excited, telling all his friends at school the next day..."Ronnie James Dio, showed the crowd my drawing of him!" For all the heaviness in Ronnies music...he still, was just a regular guy, and a nice one at that. Just really nice of Ronnie, to take a moment during his show, to show a fan, he appreciated him/her. It was Ronnie James Dio...just being a nice guy. ☀️

This little man, Ronnie James Dio is the reason I picked up a guitar and music. His whole idea of telling stories of old, of knights and dragons through your music still lives in me. Might be the alcohol in me talking but a part of me died with his passing in May 2010.
