Last week we took a road trip up to Classic Firearms in Monroe, NC to film the last shipment of Finnish M39 rifles that will soon be available for sale. Classic purchased a large private collection of nearly 14,000 rifles last year which represents likely the last remaining M39s on the market. After this last batch is sold, the only place to procure these fine firearms will be the open market at local gun shops, gun shows and through outlets like Gun Broker and the like. These rifles are highly underrated and rival the K31 in the accuracy department and are much more rare. Only around 102,000 of these rifles were ever produced, that's a ratio of 1:362 compared to the production of Russian M91/30s and 1:5 compared to the production of Swiss K31s.

Hi, a Finn gun nut here. Translations: SA = Suomen Armeija = Finnish Army Puolustusvoimat = Department of Defence There's some Finnish commenting on this video. The guys are profaning humorously: "who the fuck sent our M39s to America?!?!". We love them, too. I think we still have plenty of them here. Please take good care of the M39s. Cheers.

at 9:30 the hang-tag translates to: Gun: Number: 26689 Caliber: 7.64 Taper: 0,02 Degree of corrosion: 1P2 Manufacturer/Repairer: Inspector: Date: 22.08.1979 Additional notes on the backside I left stuff blank because the markings are so pale that I cant read them... And the word at 10:30 "puollustuslaitos translates to "department of defence" Btw, I'm a Finn and most words are pronounced just like they are written.

"Puolustuslaitos" is the old name for Finnish Defense Forces. The pronunciation is hard to explain as vocals sound different from what they are in English. The syllables are Puo-lus-tus-lai-tos. Easiest would be to break the word in to three parts, Puo-lustus-laitos and then trying to say them without breaks and you get pretty close to the correct spelling. The tag seems to be an inspection report of some sort. My guess is that this is inspection before it was shipped out of the factory as the "Valmistanut / Korjannut" has the later part crossed over and it means repaired and the first one that is not crossed over is manufactured. The other side of the tag has the more specific notes of the inspection.

Damn it eric, i've wanted one of these for so long and i recently had a sixth sense to google search surplus websites. Opened a whole bunch of tabs, just browsing. Got to Classic's website and the front page was plastered with pics of these and big ass bold letters saying LAST BATCH. Needless to say, i flipped shit, made an account and had one in the cart in a heartbeat. However, i gave it a day to sit on my mind, just to see if i could afford it and make sure i wanted one. I got the notice on my phone when this video came out and all i could say was, "Son of a bitch...if i want one i better finish my order now before theyre sold out". Look what you made me do, eric, this is your fault...you made my mind up for me. I love you, you beautiful bastard.

PUOLUSTUSLAITOS roughly translates to "Defence administration", Puolustus= Defence, Laitos= Agency, Bureau or Facility the boxed up [SA] marking stands for Suomen Armeija = Finnish Army, an old term from the finnish military before we coined it the FDF. The marking SA Int however stayed on army issue gear all the way to the early 1960s. Dont ask me tips for pronounciation, all i can say is just pronounce it the way its written and youll do fine ;) No need to strech or bend anything.

It's too bad Clasic Arms is but a former shadow of what it was when the origional owner ran it years ago. They misrepresent their listings and over charge for garbage. The last batch of Finns they had were advertised as "excellent" and what customers received were broken, rusted, and in some cases unusable rifles. Buy at your own risk....

***** I know and I'm glad you like them. Who ever sold them, probably took easy way out and gave all remaining in a single purchase. Take care of our military history, because we obviously can't. All remaining M31 Suomi smg's, which have been previously sold with light deactivation (bolt cut in angle, chamber drilled & welded and few holes in the barrel), will be welded so that nothing moves, barrels drilled, cut, welded from several places. This is due to recent EU deact directive change. I consider that all remaining value on those M31 is lost.

Got one of these and I was sorely disappointed. I was so hyped up, but for the first couple of batches, they were sold before I could fill out my info! When I finally got mine, it had a big crack in the stock and rust. Classic Firearms said the M39s were in VERY GOOD/GOOD condition and mine was certainly not that. When I posted my review + video a few months ago, I said that perhaps they should the damaged ones for less and list them as FAIR. Strangely, I could not find my review afterwards. Was it an error, or was it deleted? Now months later, they are offering rifles with cracked barrels and rust for 100 dollars less :(

Gunboards has (had?) a huge thread where people were posting what they got from Classic, and they were sending out broken stocks and rusted rifles as hand select. Then the mods at gunboards tried to lock the thread and delete negative posts because Classic is a forum sponsor for them. It was a huge scam, start to finish. And all the videos they have posted unboxing each batch of these rifles, they only show the best ones. Under those good ones are a lot of trash. Classic doesn't post negative reviews for the most part, so they have done a good job covering up the hand select scam on these rifles.

+ClassicRockLivesOn Oh, and the guy who wrote the very positive review at the bottom of their description page is a mod at gunboards, a forum sponsored by Classic. He wrote that review without seeing a single one of their rifles first (he admitted this). No conflict of interest there, huh? What a mess. That place was crazy for a few weeks while the mods and Classic tried to do damage control. They managed to silence a lot of the complaints. Hopefully they learned to be more honest from that experience, but it was enough to keep me from ordering a single one of these from them, and they lost a lot of repeat customers, like me.

+ClassicRockLivesOn As a collector of Mosin Nagants, I can say you've fallen for the most common scam in buying them: buying a random one that you cannot look at or inspect beforehand from a bulk importer. Classic Firearms and Century Arms (through Cabella's) are the two most guilty of this. Classic Firearms expects you to pay extra for a "hand selected top condition" M39 that is actually a decrepit piece of shit that's been rotting outside of its cosmoline for years, and Century Arms just takes a random Soviet barrel, paints the stock (poorly, with varnish all over the metal) grabs a bolt out of a pile, and sells it at Cabella's where you're not allowed to touch it. I'll buy Mosin Nagant's online if I find one that I feel is special (has rare marks on it such as Russian Empire stamps or Finnish captures of Soviet weapons), but I always make sure I at least have pictures I can look at. Bulk importers do not care what they sell you as long as you pay. That's why they're so cheap. Pay an extra 100 and buy from a collector-friendly firearms store, or on Gunbroker and ask all the questions you need to. In fact, let me add this to my rant, it's outright dangerous to buy a Mosin Nagant without at least knowing if the firing pin is adjusted properly on the bolt. Some people have lost eyes and noses that way. That being said, good luck shopping.

Cainus44 I thought this one was special because it was Sako, oh well. On a slightly related (and equally disappointing) note, I found an absolutely beautiful Sako M39 at a LGS that caters more towards tactical stuff. It was actually cheaper than the one from Classic, and had the prettiest stock. The employee told me it had been sitting there for months, and that no one who came to the store bought "guns like that". I didn't have the money with me, so I came back three days later, and it was gone. The guy said they sold it the day before. The hunt continues.

ClassicRockLivesOn Most M39s are Sakos, but the thing to remember is that all Finnish guns are of extremely high quality regardless of the brand, because Finnish gunsmiths at the time were among the most meticulous and and careful in the world. Finnish Mosin Nagants are special no matter what, but a special Finnish Mosin among Finnish Mosins is going to have special marks on the receiver. That's usually how I tell whether or not I'm interested in something. The receivers on Finnish and Soviet Mosin Nagants usually tell a unique story that allows you to trace the gun's history to a certain extent. For instance my first Mosin Nagant was a Finnish Velmet M91. The serial number on it told me it came from an armoury in Karelia and the stamp on the receiver told me that it was made from a Belgian barrel that was cast in 1942, but not assembled until 1945, meaning it never saw action and was likely a reserve gun until it was imported by Georgia Arms (import mark beneath the muzzle). Approximately 5000 of those were made. The stock had an imprint of two cannons crossed on it, meaning it was of Finnish origin, as that's distinctly a Finnish stockmaker's mark. The tiniest little barrel shank mark had the distinct VKT on it meaning it was a Velmet. It still had cosmoline on it when I picked it up from Collector's Firearms in Houston, so I was likely the only owner, and by some miracle it came with the incredibly rare bayonet, which differs from the Soviet one in that it is issued with a scabbard. You gotta look out for every detail on these guns, because every single one of them tells a story. Mosin Nagants are always covered in stamps and markings that allow you to uncover it. The meanings of these stamps and markings are easily available on the internet. Let me do you a favour here. I know a guy who's selling his collection. He's an individual guy selling off tons of surplus rifles he owns. I haven't bought from him yet, but I've spoken to him online before. Seems legit. He still has some M39s left last I checked and they're in great condition for a fair price judging by the photos. Google search Manowar's military surplus. You might be able to get a good deal one.

I've spent some dough at Classic Firearms and I have to say they have not let me down! My first purchase from them were two hand select mosins, one a hex 91/30 laminated Hammer and sickle with big star, I think it's a Russian Tula, with black epoxy patched bullet strike to side right above magazine. I refinished the stock and left the patch, blueing was 98% blueing. The second one an M44 hex with laminated stock about 90% blueing, not sure of the origin. I bought a S&W M&P 40 Cal police buy back that doesn't even look to ever been holstered, $399. And a few months back when they had those gorgeous Yugoslavian SKS's, hand selected and let me say it looked to never been fired with one tiny dent on what looks to be a beautiful Walnut stock. These guys do their work and seem to really find some great stuff! I can't praise Classic Firearms enough!
